Bout 14 In boxing and in all sports there are questionable calls and wrong decisions made. These are not made on purpose, Calls and decisions are made in split seconds from the perspective of the person making the call. More often than not it is one person doing their best and mistakes just happen. In this day and age we have the ability to go back and review a call and hopefully confirm that the correct call was made or decide that the call was wrong and make amends to fix it. On Saturday night bout 14 Anthony Cross vs Israel Padilla during round one Cross was given 3 standing 8 counts. Cross went on to have two strong rounds and was declared the winner at the end of the fight.  In review and per UCA rules, if a fighter receives 3 standing 8 counts or knockdowns in a round the bout will be stopped. For the past 8 weeks the UCA #3 Light Heavyweight Ray Bautista, Contra Costa County Fire Dept  has been preparing for his UCA Light Heavyweight title eliminator bout with #1 ranked Michael Valle, CDCR – PVSP.  Bautista has been training alongside stablemates Gio Morales, DC Biscoe and Ruben Leon at the Old School Boxing Gym in Fairfield. “They are great sparring partners” Bautista said. “They each have different styles which will have me ready for anything”
During each workout Bautista is constantly reminded by his coach Sergio Sanchez and Jose Barboza to have good technique and stay focused on the fundamentals.
Bautista had a chance to spar with the former WBC Continental Americas Welterweight Champion  Allen Sanchez (21-5) last week. Bautista had this to say about sparing the former champion. “What an awesome opportunity to spar Allen. He is never out of position and makes little movements to avoid and throw punches.” Bautista is like a sponge at the gym soaking up all the knowledge he can get from other fighters and his trainers. If Bautista can sneak by Valle he will get his chance to face the undefeated UCA Light Heavyweight Champion Cesar Sosa, CDCR CMF a second time.

UCA Cruiserweight Jacob Duncan, Shasta County Sheriff’s Office is preparing to make his return to the ring. Duncan took some time to answer a few questions about his upcoming fight with Darnell Strigglers, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept.

UCA – When did you start your career in Law Enforcement?

JD – I started my career working with the Anderson Police Department in 2016. I was promoted to a Detective over there from December 2018- March 2022. I transitioned over to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office as a Detective in March of 2022.

UCA – When did you start boxing?

JD – I’ve been boxing on and off since I was 12, but my only amateur fight was with Battle of the Badges in 2017. Which I lost to a decision.

UCA – What made you want to box?

JD – Boxing is an outlet for me for work and it helps me stay in working shape for the job.

UCA– How much road work are you doing to prepare for this fight? Sprints, stairs, hills?

JD – I do 15 miles worth of running a week with body weight circuits implemented in. 3 miles of that is hill climbs.

UCA – Who is your coach?

JD – My coach is Daniel Azarate with Shasta Boxing Club

UCA – Who are some of your sparring partners?

JD – My primary sparring partner right now is Tim Chavez.

UCA – How often do you spar?

JD – I’m incorporating sparring into each training session which is at least four times a week. We also travel out of the area to spar with new talent to give my skill more depth.

UCA – Do you have a prediction for your fight with Darnell Strigglers, LASD

JD – My prediction is to put on a good show and tire Darnell out. If he gives me any opportunities I’ll take advantage of them with some big blows.

Vinny answered a few questions about his upcoming fight, his  opponent, and training.

UCA – What gym do you train at?

VB – I train at DG Combat in Concord CA.

UCA – When did you start training at DG Combat?

VB – I started training with my coach Tony DeSousa at DG Boxing in 2010.

UCA – How many days a week are you training for boxing?

VB – Every day’s training has at least aspects of boxing in it.  Everything I have been doing since taking the fight has been in preparation for this bout.

UCA – How often do you spar?

VB – I spar twice a week.

UCA – How many miles per week do you run?

VB – I put in about 6 to 8 miles a week. Some long runs and some sprinting workouts.

UCA – Aside from running and preparing for your fight at the gym do you do any other training?

VB – Other training includes weight training and interval work.

UCA – You will be making your ring debut against Andy Pholkham, SSO who has fight experience and knows what it’s like fighting in front of a big crowd. Do you think that gives him an advantage?

VB – Sure. I think if I’m completely honest, it would give him a slight advantage, simply because it won’t be so novel for him as it will be for me. I plan on compensating for this disadvantage by putting myself in as good of shape as I can possibly be in.

UCA – Have you and your coach come up with a game plan for the fight?

VB – Yep! Try to beat him up if I can.

UCA – Do you have a prediction ?

VB – I’m gonna do my very best.

A pair of talented fighters are ready to stake their claim for a middleweight title fight. UCA newcomer Vinny Bellafronte, Woodland Fire Dept will collide with Andy Pholkham, Sacramento Sheriff’s Office in a UCA Super Middleweight catchweight fight.

Pholkham is a proven warrior who takes on all comers. He has a vicious body attack and looks to end fights early. Pholkham is honing his skills at Grimz gym and with the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office Boxing Team. Bellafronte is a light heavyweight squeezed into a middleweight body. He is all muscle but agile and fluid in his abilities and doesn’t seem to have any weakness. Bellafronte is sharpening his skills at DG Combat in Concord under Coach Tony DeSousa.

The Middleweight division is wide open and waiting for someone to take it over. Sitting at the top of the middleweight division is undefeated Chad Madrid, Santa Monica Police Dept. A dominating performance by Pholkham or Bellafronte could perhaps shoot one of them to the top of the division to face Madrid for the UCA Middleweight title.

When the matchups were being made for the NorCal Battle of the Badges, Lance Martinez, LASD said, “If I beat #1 ranked Montes, will I take over the #1 spot and be put in position to fight against the UCA Champion Efrain Moreno from LAPD?” The answer was “Yes.” Martinez is on the fast track to the top but with only 2 fights under his belt he has a big challenge in front of him. Montes holds a record of 9-1 and will have an added advantage of fighting at home. Noel Montes, CDCR – FSP and Lance Martinez, LASD will square off in a UCA Jr Heavyweight title eliminator fight. This is a must  win fight for both boxers. Montes is 38 and is coming off a 4 year lay off. His last fight was a decision win over Victor Ibal, Sanger Police Dept. Martinez is only 26 and looks to rebound big from his only loss to the undefeated UCA Champion Joshua Robles, LAPD. Will the experience advantage of Montes be too much for Martinez to make up? The UCA Cruiserweight Champion Anthony Cross, CDCR – CSP Sacramento and the UCA #1 ranked Sean Baker, LA Fire Department met for the first time Saturday. Their meeting took place by chance. Cross was in Los Angeles for the Ryan Garcia vs Javier Fortuna fight at Crypto.com Arena and decided to stop by the LA Fire Station and meet his rival. This is raising hopes that talks for a fight might get serious.

This would certainly be one of the biggest UCA Championship fights and could potentially shatter all box-office attendance records. Cross and Baker have perfect records and are not afraid to ruin their streak or tarnish their legacy to test themselves against the best competition. This dream fight was originally scheduled for the Central California Battle of the Badges April 11, 2020 but was canceled due to covid, a huge disappointment to the public safety boxing world. The timing was perfect for Cross and Baker to finally meet. Let’s hope the timing is perfect for them to finally meet in the ring.

The first title fight of the night featured a unique style matchup between Kellen Kramer,  Bell Gardens Police Dept vs Jesse Zuñiga, LAPD for the UCA Jr Middleweight title. Zuñiga is a very patient and calculated fighter who waits for his opponent to make a mistake and makes them pay for it.  When the bell rang to start this Jr Middleweight war Kramer came out of his corner ready to attack.  The game plan was neutralized by spectacular footwork, timing and elusiveness from Zuniga. The rugged and always tough Kramer was knocked down early in the round and got right back to his feet. Zuñiga’s timing and counter punching was just too much for Kramer. Zuñiga would score a knockout victory right before the bell sounded to end the 1st round.  And New….UCA Jr Welterweight Champion Jesse Zuniga, Los Angeles Police Dept.

Next up was perhaps the biggest female fight in Public Safety boxing history. This was a very close fight that was decided by 2 or 3 scoring punches. Tough fight for the judges to score.  When the scorecards were added up it was a split decision victory. And New…UCA Light Heavyweight Champion Cesar Sosa, CDCR California Medical Facility.

Justin Cortez, Baldwin Park Police Dept. vs Armando Franco, Tulare Police Dept featured two fundamentally sound highly skilled fighters in a war for the UCA Welterweight crown.  Franco set a fast pace from the start and never slowed down. There were ebbs and flows throughout the fight. Cortez would have his moments but Franco was the more active of the two, and landed the more effective punches.  After 3 hard fought rounds the judges had a decision.  And New…UCA Welterweight Champion Armando Franco, Tulare Police Department.

The UCA Jr Heavyweight Title fight was almost canceled. Efrain Moreno, LAPD was originally scheduled to challenge Noel Montes, CDCR, Folsom State Prison for the UCA Jr Heavyweight title.  Montes suffered a foot injury and was forced to withdraw from the fight.  Montes was replaced by unbeaten Chris Romero, DSH – Coalinga.  This contest would go the distance. The undisputed reigning and defending UCA Cruiserweight Champion Anthony Cross, CDCR – CSP Sacramento put his belt and perfect record on the line against Andrew Ortiz, CDCR North Kern State Prison to find out who is the best Cruiserweight fighter.  When the bell rang to start this much anticipated matchup, Cross came forward looking to establish his offense. He pushed the pace  and hit Ortiz with clean, hard punches. As the fight wore on it became a question of whether the Champion would be able to drag Ortiz into deep waters and drowned him. Ortiz didn’t let that happen, although he suffered two knockdowns there was no quit in him.  In the end Cross was the clear-cut winner. And still…….The undisputed, undefeated, reigning and defending UCA Cruiserweight Champion…..Anthony Cross, CDCR- CSP Sacramento.

When the bell rang to start the fight Delery and Ming came to the center of the ring and found their range early and started landing punches on the target.  As the fight unfolded Delery started to land a higher percentage of his punches and his jab was more effective.  Ming fought back with counterpunching and tried to match Delerys output.  Delery kept up his attack and started to wear Ming down. When the final bell sounded the judges added up their scorecard and had a winner. And New….. Masters UCA Jr Middleweight Champion Mike Delery, Redondo Beach Police Dept. With the win, Delery becomes the first fighter to hold a UCA open division Championship title and a Masters UCA Championship title. Dylan Hicks, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept seems to possess championship potential and is prepared to make a huge statement next Saturday night and put himself in position to fight for a title. To get to the top of the division he will have to get through Marcel Hernandez, CDCR Avenal State Prison. Hicks answered a few questions about training camp, preparation, stablemates and his prediction for the fight.

UCA – How has training camp been preparing for your fight with Hernandez?

DH – Training camp for this fight has been going extremely well. The chemistry between my coach (fighter/trainer Abran Rodriguez) and I has reached a higher level and I find that I’m able to box better than I ever have before.

UCA – How many days a week are you training?

DH – I’m taking Hernandez very seriously so I’m training about 5-6 times a week

UCA – How often are you sparring?

DH – I’ve been sparring a steady 2-3 times a week on average

UCA – Who are some of your stablemates or sparring partners for this training camp?

DH – I’m training with fighters from LASD, Burbank PD, and CO’s from the Antelope Valley, with the majority being heavyweights. Fighters like April Fonseca, Darnell Strigglers, Lance Martinez, Manuel Martinez and others.

UCA – Aside from training at Brickhouse Boxing Gym have you trained or sparred at any other gyms?

DH – Other than Brickhouse I spend a lot of time at our local gym next to the Wayside Jail in Castaic, with the LASD Boxing Team.

UCA – When is your last day of sparring?

DH – As far as hard sparring, the last day will be early next week. I usually let my coach do the planning as far as my training. He always knows what’s good for me as far as what I need to work on and spend my time developing.

UCA – Do u have a prediction for your fight with Hernandez?

DH – As far as a prediction for the fight, I’m always eager for a finish. My last fight was a TKO victory for me and I’m looking for another one. However I’m fully prepared for a 3 round war with Hernandez, and I know he’s coming for the same thing.

The UCA talks with professional boxing and MMA trainer Eloy Garza, about training Javier Robles, Tulare Sheriffs Dept for his ring debut April 2, 2022.

UCA  – When did training camp start for Javier’s fight?

EG – Training camp began for Javier mid December.

UCA – How many days a week does Javier train and spar?

EG – We do floor work 2 days a week and sparring one day a week.

UCA – Have you taken Javier to any other gyms for sparring?

EG – We usually spar at Hanford PAL where we get really good work from young, strong, fast active boxers.

UCA – Is stablemate Jason Stingley, Pismo Beach Police Dept. Javier’s main sparring partner?

EG – Jason is one of many sparring partners. Jason has been a great mentor for Javier. During training sessions, he gives him insight as to how relax and set up his punches

UCA – Is Robles a hard worker in the gym?

EG – I’ve never had to ask Javier to pick up the pace in training. His pride doesn’t allow him to just pace himself. Conditioning wise he can keep up with my 130lb teenagers. Undergoing an identical training regimen to my active fighters is a plus for Javier. He has not missed a single training session.

UCA – Are you pleased with Javier’s development as a fighter?

EG – I’m really impressed with his ability to take instructions and implement them immediately. We have really focused on building a well balanced foundation. He has learned to punch from a balanced position and remain on balance after punching. I think that will be the biggest difference in this fight. Javier understands the importance of balance and will make his opponent pay for sloppy mistakes.

The UCA Jr Heavyweight title challenger #3 Efrain Moreno, LAPD has a few more days of hard sparring at Westside Boxing Gym before his training camp comes to an end. Moreno is preparing to challenge #1 ranked Noel Montes, CDCR Folsom State Prison for the vacant UCA Jr Heavyweight Championship title. Moreno has trained at Westside Boxing in Los Angeles for 6 years. During that time Moreno has gained a lot of experience. He trains next to professional fighters and spars with top level amateurs. The Westside Boxing Club was established in 2007 by the Saucedo Ruiz boxing family. In a short period, Westside has developed a reputation as a true and traditional “fight gym.” ESPN recently recognized the club as one of Boxing’s Most Famous Gyms. Under the helm of family patriarch, Jose Manuel Saucedo, brothers Jose and Nacho Saucedo serve as head trainers. Has a rematch ever had a 24 year gap? Well fight fans we have a very unique rematch.

24 years ago Izzy Montes, CDCR CSP Sacramento would square off with Steven King, CDCR State Parole for the Gold Medal in the 1998 Police Olympics. After 3 close rounds Montes would emerge the victor by a very close decision and leave the ring with the Gold Medal around his neck. King thought he did enough to win and the decision did not sit well with him.

After 24 years King will finally get his chance for revenge.

The best kept secret in public safety boxing is 24 year old Jesse Zuñiga, LAPD. Zuñiga is a proud single father of two (4yr old) and (1 and a half year old) “They motivate me to do everything I do” Zuñiga said.
This UCA Jr Middleweight is trained by Isaac & Ivan Zarate at the Dinamita Boxing Gym located in San Pedro, CA. The gym has one small ring which forces fighters to engage and not dance around when sparring. The gym also has heavy bags, speedbags double end bags weights and plenty of floor space for skipping rope and mitt work. The gym provides plenty of sparring for Zuniga. Last week he sparred 8 rounds with professional undefeated fighter (13-0) Chris Alvidrez. Zuñiga showed great balance and cardio against Alvidrez. Zuñiga’s movement, combinations, the placement of his feet, hips, and shoulders is like a work of art. His technical knowledge and biomechanical foundations, are reminiscent of Bugarin, Sheklanian and Stevens who are perhaps 3 of the most talented fighters in the UCA. Don’t miss Jesse Zuñiga trade leather with Mikel Haggett, United States Forest Service -Smoke Jumper, Saturday April 2, 2022 at the Central California Battle of the Badges, Visalia Convention Center. Team Madrid

The unbeaten Middleweight Chad Madrid, Santa Monica Police Dept is in training camp preparing to take on Luis Bravo, DSHP-Coalinga. Madrid is not taking his opponent lightly. He shows up to the Global Boxing Gym in Gardena at 6am every morning. He trains under the tutelage of Coach Al Ugarte. Al, a former fighter who has been around the fight game a long time and has plenty of fighting and coaching experience to share with his fighter. Coach Al has Madrid’s training camp planned out until fight time. Each morning Madrid is put through a rigorous training routine. Madrid has caught onto things very fast. He looks sharp on the mitts, hitting the bags and has good boxing fundamentals. Another plus to training camp is the advice and work Madrid gets from stablemates Will Jones, and Josh Thurmond. Team Madrid is doing everything they can to win, will it be enough?
