Has a rematch ever had a 24 year gap? Well fight fans we have a very unique rematch.

24 years ago Izzy Montes, CDCR CSP Sacramento would square off with Steven King, CDCR State Parole for the Gold Medal in the 1998 Police Olympics. After 3 close rounds Montes would emerge the victor by a very close decision and leave the ring with the Gold Medal around his neck. King thought he did enough to win and the decision did not sit well with him.

After 24 years King will finally get his chance for revenge.

The best kept secret in public safety boxing is 24 year old Jesse Zuñiga, LAPD. Zuñiga is a proud single father of two (4yr old) and (1 and a half year old) “They motivate me to do everything I do” Zuñiga said.
This UCA Jr Middleweight is trained by Isaac & Ivan Zarate at the Dinamita Boxing Gym located in San Pedro, CA. The gym has one small ring which forces fighters to engage and not dance around when sparring. The gym also has heavy bags, speedbags double end bags weights and plenty of floor space for skipping rope and mitt work. The gym provides plenty of sparring for Zuniga. Last week he sparred 8 rounds with professional undefeated fighter (13-0) Chris Alvidrez. Zuñiga showed great balance and cardio against Alvidrez. Zuñiga’s movement, combinations, the placement of his feet, hips, and shoulders is like a work of art. His technical knowledge and biomechanical foundations, are reminiscent of Bugarin, Sheklanian and Stevens who are perhaps 3 of the most talented fighters in the UCA. Don’t miss Jesse Zuñiga trade leather with Mikel Haggett, United States Forest Service -Smoke Jumper, Saturday April 2, 2022 at the Central California Battle of the Badges, Visalia Convention Center. Mike Delery, Redondo Beach PD vs Daniel Ming, Oakland PD (retired) features an intriguing matchup with two different paths to the Masters UCA Jr Middleweight Championship Title.
In 2016 Delery, LAPD claimed the UCA Jr Middleweight title. Delery would defend his title and in 2018 he dared to be great by moving up a division to capture a 2nd title. He went head to head with the UCA Middleweight Champion Christian Pharo, San Diego Fire Lifeguard and would lose by close decision. After nearly a 4 year layoff Delery looks to claim the title once again.  His opponent Daniel Ming, does not have a big record. Ming only has one mma fight but he has been around the sport of fighting his whole life. Delery has the clear experience advantage but Ming is closing that gap having Marcus Reaves in his corner. Reaves runs and owns the UFC Gym in Sacramento and has worked with some of the most renowned boxing and MMA fighters in the industry. Ming is taking full advantage of it.  He has taken advice and worked with Chris Holdsworth, Darren Elkins, Danny Castillo, Ricky Turcois, Vince Murdock and Kito Andrews. Experience and knowledge will prove key in this fight. Does Delery still have what it takes to be a champion? Will the 4 year layoff be a factor? Can Team Ming close the experience gap?  Those questions will be answered April 2, 2022. Don’t miss the Central California Battle of the Badges at the Visalia Convention Center.  Doors open at 4pm fighters touch gloves at 6pm.

The Bat Cave Boxing Club in Clovis CA is where undefeated Donavon Lewis, Fresno PD and #1 ranked Victor Ibal, Sanger PD have trained for years. The Bat Cave is one of Public Safety boxing’s most tight-knit and consistently successful gyms. The gym has produced 3 UCA Champions and is known for cranking out top tier talent.  Lewis and Ibal know each other very well and have sparred nearly 100 rounds together. When Lewis and Ibal agreed to fight each other it was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up. When head coach Bryan Williams, Fresno PD was asked how he felt about Lewis and Ibal fighting each other and if it might effect the gym’s atmosphere, Williams said. “Look, fighters have a limited window in which to earn a title before the window closes.  If you are in this sport to be a champion then you have to be willing to fight whoever stands in your way even if it’s your stablemate.” Donavon Lewis, Fresno Police Dept. will duke it out with #1 ranked Victor Ibal, Sanger Police Dept. for the Interim UCA Super Heavyweight title. It is not easy to become a champion, it takes determination, practice, discipline and a commitment to never give up, give in, back up, back down, quit or walk away.  You may not be able to put your finger on exactly what makes a person a champion but something special is definitely there. Undoubtedly the most important quality that all champions share is an unwavering belief that they will succeed. Sugar Ray Robinson said, “To be a champion you have to believe in yourself when no one else will.” Champions know that if they persist long enough, eventually they must succeed. When it comes time to train they turn everything else off and zero in on what they are doing. Work is anything you’re doing when you’d rather be doing something else. Champions are doing what they love, so to them it’s not work at all. There are no days off.  You must do something everyday to improve: getting closer to your fight weight, fine tuning your technique, improving your cardio, studying fight film.  If it was easy, everyone could do it and there would be no difference between an ordinary fighter and an extraordinary one.

Congratulations to:
James Dorris, Folsom Police Dept -Masters UCA Jr Heavyweight Champion,
BJ Adkins, Raleigh County Sheriffs Dept – UCA Jr Welterweight Champion,
Chris Dubinasky, Camp Pendleton Fire Dept, – 2 Division UCA Heavyweight and Super Heavyweight Champion,
Joe Fuentes, City of Miami Fire Rescue, – Masters UCA Welterweight Champion,
Aurelio Vazquez, LAPD – Masters UCA Jr Cruiserweight Champion,
Sterling Ingram, U.S Navy – UCA Super Middleweight Champion.

UCA rivalries are special to public safety boxing.  They go beyond just fights.  A rivalry makes everything in the arena feel bigger and intensifies everything around it. Rematches and trilogies produce real-life story lines and leave a lasting mark on UCA history. Rivalries connect two fighters together forever as they look to prove something to each other and to themselves. Every great fighter needs a great rival. Robinson had LaMotta, Ali had Frazier, Pacquiao had Marquez, Gatti had Ward, Corrales had Castillo, Morales had Barrera, Marquez had Vasquez and Holyfield had Bowe. Below are a list of UCA rivalries that were selected among the sport’s elite and were centered around a championship title.  Stevens vs Braithwaite, Vasquez vs Pereida, Mirage vs Vargas, Fonseca vs Morales, Montes vs Hagen, Mendoza vs Pineda, Flores vs Lavarro, Vasquez vs Rivera, Valle vs Mirage, and Blevins vs Webb. These UCA rivalries captured the attention of legions of fans and had a huge impact and significance on the sport. These fights will only be looked back on even more fondly as time goes on.

Oct 2019 06

It was a night of nonstop action at the NorCal Battle of the Badges Saturday night. The event produced great performances and gave fans a glimpse of the new talent and future champions. Four UCA Championship titles were on the line and two new champions were crowned.  “Fight of the Night” honors were given to UCA Super Heavyweights Mike Pesole, CDCR CSP Sac and Tullee Brown, CDCR DVI. The UCA Golden Fists award was given to Cesar Sosa, CDCR CMF, Bogdan Gushchin, Stockton Police Dept. and Alex Tafoya, SJCSO. The UCA Gladiator award was given to Carlos Quezada, Yolo County SD, Steven Howard, CDCR, DVI and Bobby Nichols, CDCR, SCC. Click on the Results tab to see the full results.

The first title fight of the night featured the Masters UCA undefeated
Welterweight Champion Frank Quitugua, CDCR California Medical Facility defending his title against an opponent who traveled all the way from Miami Florida for his shot at the title.  City of Miami Fire-Rescue Captain Joe Fuentes. Fuentes knew he would have to put on the performance of his life to take the title from the champion. After 3 rounds of back and forth of action the judges had a winner. These warriors brought out the best in each other. Quitugua fought hard but it wasn’t enough to sway the judges to give him the decision. Quitugua would suffer his first defeat and lose his title. And the new….Masters UCA Welterweight Champion Joe Fuentes.

The main event of the night featured James Dorris, Folsom Police Dept vs Bryan Williams, Fresno Police Dept. This fight was ten years in the making. The timing was never right for them to meet earlier. The stars aligned and the timing was right for Saturday night.  Dorris and Williams would finally square off for the vacant Masters UCA Jr Heavyweight crown. This fight would go the distance and with no knockdowns or anyone landing any significant blows or taking control of the fight it was very tough to score. After 3 rounds the decision would be left in the hands of the judges to decide. When the scores were added up one judge had Williams winning and two judges had Dorris winning. And the new….Masters UCA Jr Heavyweight Champion James Dorris.

The only female fight featured the undefeated reigning and defending UCA Super Welterweight Champion April Martinez, CDCR CHCF defending her title against #3 Jessica Segovia, Banning Police Dept. Whenever you have two highly skilled female fighters matched up you know you are going to see a great fight. That’s what the fans got Saturday night. When the bell rang both fighters came out showing good balance and great boxing fundamentals. Both fighters were using feints to set up shots, throwing crisp counter punches and going to the body. After 3 rounds of action we are going to the score cards. Two judges scored it for the Champion and one judge had it for the challenger. And still…..the UCA Super Welterweight Champion April Martinez. The belt was presented to the champion by NextHome Premier Properties owner Corey Rasmussen.

The last title fight of the night featured the undefeated UCA Cruiserweight belt holder Anthony Cross, CDCR CSP Sac going head to head with  #4 Juan Valle, Sanger PD.  Valle accepted the fight with Cross on 4 days notice. Cross’s original opponent Roman Grider, CDCR Corcoran SATF was forced to withdraw from the fight due to personal family issues. When the bell rang to start this highly anticipated fight the fans were on the edge of their seat. No feeling out period needed both guys came forward and started trading leather. Cross was first to land a heavy blow and Valle hit the canvas. Valle was on his feet before the 10 count finished but the referee waved off the fight one minute into the first round. When the referee is in the ring their #1 priority is the safety of the fighter. “I could have continued” Valle said. “Unfortunately it feels my chance was stripped away from me. I was upset with the ref for stopping the fight and not allowing me to continue. If possible I would like a rematch this time with proper training time.” There is no doubt Juan Valle has warrior blood running through his veins. Not many fighters would accept a fight with an undefeated champion on 4 days notice. Valle absolutely deserves a rematch. When the emcee announced, “And still…..The undefeated UCA Champion Anthony Cross” the belt was put around the waist of the best Cruiserweight in the game. What is next for Cross? As of right now Cross is in control and looks to clean out the division. There are a lot of possibilities,  Shawn Baker, LAFD, Rodney Cavanaugh, Pomona PD, Efrain Moreno, LAPD and a rematch with Juan Valle, Sanger PD.  Any of those four names mentioned would make for a compelling, blockbuster fight.

Sacramento, Calif – The NorCal Battle of the Badges official weigh-in produced 17 hard hitting bouts including 4 UCA Championship title fights for Saturday night’s event.

James Dorris, Folsom Police Dept and Bryan Williams, Fresno Police Dept came in way under the 212 limit for the Masters UCA Jr Heavyweight title.

Since the champion Martinez did not make the contracted weight the fight could be a non title fight or canceled but Segovia wanted to fight. “I didn’t travel from Los Angeles and train this hard for the fight to be canceled. I don’t care how much she weighs I want to fight.” Let’s go!!! Don’t miss tomorrow night’s event. Doors open at 4:30 first punch thrown at 6:30. 701 K Street Downtown Sacramento.
