UCA Fighter Profile: Ivan Mendoza – Kings County Probation

A Lifetime Athlete Takes on a New Challenge

For more than three years, Ivan Mendoza has served with Kings County Probation, dedicating himself to helping his community. Now, he is preparing for an entirely different challenge as he steps into the boxing ring for the first time at the Central California Battle of the Badges: Unfinished Business event on June 27, 2026.

Mendoza’s athletic background stretches back to his school days, where he competed in football and track. During his senior year, he was introduced to rugby, a sport he quickly embraced and has continued playing ever since. The physicality, toughness, and teamwork required in rugby helped shape the competitive mindset he carries today.

Unlike many fighters making their UCA debut, Mendoza enters the ring without any previous combat sports experience. No boxing, MMA, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, or Muay Thai background. His introduction to the sport came after watching a friend participate in a Battle of the Badges event.

“I saw a friend participate and figured, why not me too?” Mendoza said.

Learning on the Fly

With limited time to prepare, Mendoza has approached training with a realistic mindset. At the time of this interview, he had only been training for about a week.

Most of his preparation has been under the guidance of his brother, who has experience in MMA. While the timeline may be short, Mendoza has focused on building the fundamentals and making the most of every training session.

His priorities have been to improve his conditioning, make weight, and develop the basic boxing skills needed to compete effectively.

“I’m working on the basic footwork and combos so I don’t overwhelm myself with so little time given,” Mendoza explained.

He trains his fitness daily while dedicating specific boxing sessions twice a week.

Confidence in His Athletic Ability

One of the biggest challenges Mendoza has faced has been gaining sparring experience and becoming comfortable with the realities of combat sports.

“Getting sparring experience to get a real feel for it” has been his toughest hurdle so far.

Despite his lack of experience, Mendoza remains confident in the tools he brings to the ring.

“I believe my strength, fitness, and natural footwork will be enough to come out on top,” he said.

His athletic background and years of competition in rugby have given him confidence in his ability to adapt under pressure and perform when the lights come on.

Fighting for Family

Perhaps the biggest motivation behind Mendoza’s ring debut is family.

His father was an accomplished boxer in his younger years, and Mendoza sees this fight as an opportunity to honor that legacy.

“My dad was a very good boxer back in his day, and I want to show him I can do well in something he loved doing, even without any experience.”

That personal connection gives this fight added meaning and serves as a powerful source of motivation as he prepares for June 27.

Respect for His Opponent

Standing across the ring from Mendoza will be Enrique Espinoza of the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.

Although Espinoza enters the bout with an 0-3 record, Mendoza isn’t overlooking him for a second.

“I’ve seen all three of his fights, and he definitely has a lot of skill. This fight can go any direction.”

Rather than making bold predictions, Mendoza is focused on competing hard and giving fans an entertaining fight.

“I just hope I can keep him honest and keep it an evenly strong fight all three rounds.”

June 27: Time to Find Out

With no combat sports background, limited training time, and a willingness to step outside his comfort zone, Ivan Mendoza embodies the spirit of the Battle of the Badges. He may be entering the ring as a newcomer, but he brings the mindset of a lifelong athlete and the determination to honor his family while testing himself on the biggest stage in public safety boxing.

On June 27, Mendoza will make his long awaited ring debut when he faces Enrique Espinoza at the Central California Battle of the Badges: Unfinished Business event inside the Fresno City College Gymnasium.

For Mendoza, it’s not about experience. it’s about embracing the challenge and proving to himself that he’s willing to step into the unknown.
