Sacramento Battle of the Badges March 31, 2012 Under-Card Results

After the 1st round Brent Bugarin, Santa Clara S.D. vs. Marc Baes, CDCR had the makings of a great fight. To start the 2nd round both guys displayed good footwork as they looked for their opening. Bugarin saw his opening first and landed his combination which caused the referee to step in and stop the fight. “This kid (Bugarin) is good,” Baes said. “This is the type of fight I wanted. I don’t agree with the stoppage, I felt the fight was just warming up.” Bugarin is a young, humble, talented fighter who people will be hearing about. Bugarin winner, 2nd round TKO.

No one expected to see the “Fight of the Night” when Jodi Brown, Sac P.D., and Nelly Mendoza, Fresno P.D., stepped into the ring for the first time. For 6 minutes everyone in attendance witnessed something special. These ladies showed so much heart, and gave everything they had. The feelings you have while you watch matches like Brown and Mendoza are what make boxing so special. Their heart and bravado can never be questioned. If Brown or Mendoza never fight again, they left a lasting impression on everyone who witnessed their fight. Brown was announced the winner by decision.

UCA 4th ranked Rafael Heredia, CDCR moved up in weight to take on 1-0 Dru McDonald Sac Metro Fire. McDonald drew first blood when he landed a shot that caused the referee to step in and give Heredia a standing 8 count.  Heredia cleared his head and returned the favor to McDonald by landing a hard shot to the head that prompted the referee to step in and give McDonald a standing 8 count. Heredia won the fight by decision and kept is undefeated streak alive.

Mark Tibbles , CDCR vs. Adan Castillo Yolo Co. Corrections. The first round looked like Tibbles would win the fight with his jab alone. Tibbles had the height and reach on Castillo and was using it perfectly. When the bell sounded to start the 2nd round Castillo came out like a different fighter. He fought on the inside and threw short hooks and upper cuts. One of Castillo’s hooks to the body got through causing Tibbles to take a knee. The referee stepped in and stopped the fight in the 2nd round. Castillo winner, 2nd round TKO.

Craig Hamblin, CDCR had the size and weight advantage over his opponent Joe Gatie, CDCR. However Team Gatie had a game plan and executed it perfectly. Gatie is coached by Gary McCoy an accomplished amateur with over 80 fights. Despite Hamblin’s best efforts, he did not have an answer for Gatie’s strategy. Gatie winner by unanimous decision.

David Richardson, CDCR vs. Marco Montano, U.S Coast Guard. As soon as the bell sounded Richardson came forward and brought the fight to Montano. This was not a boxing match, this was a fight. In the 2nd round Montano caught Richardson with a hard shot causing the referee to step in and stop the fight. Montano winner by 2nd round TKO.

UCA #2 ranked Neil Tremethick, U.S. Army vs. UCA #7 ranked Chris Martinez, Avenal P.D. Martinez came out the first round working his jab like a piston. Half way through the first round Tremethick turned southpaw and that seemed to turn the tide in his favor. Martinez rhythm and timing seemed to be thrown off by the southpaw style of Tremethick. The second and 3rd rounds were close with Tremethick winning with his speed and combinations. It was a technical, action packed fight with both boxers displaying a good skill set. Tremethick winner by decision.
