Zachary Martinez, Lindsay Police Department

For Zachary Martinez, stepping into the ring at the Central California Battle of the Badges is the culmination of a lifetime spent embracing competition. A police officer with the Lindsay Police Department for the past two and a half years, Martinez has always been drawn to sports that demand discipline, toughness, and the ability to perform under pressure.

Growing up, Martinez developed a passion for boxing while also competing in football, rugby, CrossFit, and jiu-jitsu. He later attended Porterville College and the College of the Sequoias, continuing to build the athletic mindset that now serves him both as a law enforcement officer and an amateur boxer.

His introduction to boxing came at an early age, inspired by someone he admired most, his uncle, Ernesto Delgado. An accomplished boxer who won numerous competitions, Delgado became Martinez’s childhood hero and the person who sparked his love for the sport.

Martinez brings four to five years of previous boxing experience into his ring debut. Before accepting this opportunity, he was focused primarily on strength training and heavy weightlifting. Once the fight was offered, his attention immediately shifted toward preparing to step into the ring.

Training out of Varela’s Boxing Gym, Martinez has spent less than a month preparing specifically for this fight, training approximately five days a week after work. With limited time to prepare, his camp has centered on improving his conditioning, stamina, and mental toughness qualities he believes will be critical on fight night.

Like many first time competitors, balancing work, family, and training has been his greatest challenge. Managing his time while maintaining the intensity needed to prepare for competition has required commitment and sacrifice.

When the opening bell rings, Martinez believes his conditioning, mental strength, and previous boxing experience will be his greatest assets. But more than physical preparation, he credits his faith and the people around him for making this opportunity possible.

Martinez says his greatest source of strength is his faith in Jesus Christ, beginning each day with prayer and gratitude. He is also thankful for the unwavering support of the Lindsay Police Department and his wife of 14 years, Joneese, who has stood beside him throughout every challenge and encouraged him every step of the way.

As for expectations on fight night, Martinez isn’t making any predictions. Instead, his goal is simple, leave everything in the ring.

“I’m going to give everything I have and leave nothing on the table. I’ll be at my best, and I hope my opponent is at his so we can put on a great show for everyone who took the time to come out and support us. These fights require a lot of sacrifice, and I respect every fighter who committed to the process and saw it through to the end.”
