LAPD Boxing

Posted In Blog

Two fighters from the LAPD Boxing team have big fights this month. March 16th Ivan Guillermo will be having his pro Debut. On March 31st Juan Bustamante will be fighting for the UCA Light Heavyweight State Title.

The LAPD Boxing Team is a close knit group. When one of their teammates is fighting the whole team turns their focus on that fighter. One thing about the LAPD Boxing team you have to admire is they are like a family. Not only are their teammates supporting them but the whole dept and in some cases a whole city gets behind them.

Juan Bustamante was raised in the city of Azusa. Once the city heard about Juan fighting for a title in Sacramento the Mayor Joe Rocha organized a press conference to show his support.

This is the kind of support all Public Safety officers should get.  A lot has to be said about these officers who have families, work 40 plus hours a week, put their lives on the line everyday and still want to give back by training and competing to raise money for charity boxing events.

Ivan Guillermo will be fighting on the ALL STAR Promotions Combat United Boxing MMA Card. Ivan is a Los Angeles Police Officer Hollenbeck Division. Ivan Guillermo has accomplished a lot as an amateur boxer. He has competed in the International Police and Fire Games winning a bronze medal. He is a Police Olympic Gold Medalist, Main Event fighter, and no one can forget his three epic battles with Jorge Caamal from LASD. Ivan is going to test the waters at the Professional level March 16th in Montebello at the Quiet Cannon. He will be facing Victor Valenzuela also in his Pro Debut. The fight will be 4 rounds in the Jr Middleweight division.

Scoring A Fight

Posted In Blog

California State Athletic Commission Scoring

If you’re a boxing fan, you know that judges can see a fight in many different ways. They use the same rules to decide the outcome of a match, but the scores can be greatly different. Here are some guidelines for you to score a bout and see how close you come to the judge’s decision.

Three judges score each bout on a 10-point must system. That means the winner of each round gets 10 points. The loser of the round gets 9 points or less. If you think the round is even, give both fighters 10 points. When there is a knockdown in the round, give the loser of the round 8 points; more than one knockdown and the loser gets 7 points. If a fighter gets knocked down three times in a round the fight is over. The referee can deduct a point or more, or even disqualify a fighter for rules violations such as low blows, holding, hitting on the break or hitting after the bell has been sounded.

Here are four things to look for in a fight.

  1. EFFECTIVE PUNCHES, Punches that land solidly and cleanly.
  2. EFFECTIVE AGGRESSIVENESS, This means being effective while also being aggressive; forcing the fight and landing punches.
  3. RING GENALSHIP, This is when the fighter takes control of the ring action.
  4. GOOD DEFENSE, This is when a fighter avoids punches while still keeping his hands ready offensively and counter punching.

Now you are ready to score a bout like a professional judge.

A lot of pressure is being put on the Main Event fighters in the Sacramento Battle of the Badges Boxing Event. The Director of Corrections, Richard Subia has made a friendly wager with the LA Police Chief, Charles Beck for the upcoming UCA State Championship Title Fight. Juan “Bad Blood” Bustamante LAPD vs. James “Doin Damage” Davis, Correctional Officer, Folsom Prison. If Davis wins, LA Police Chief, Charles Beck must hang a San Francisco Giants banner in his office for one week.
