The best kept secret in public safety boxing is 24 year old Jesse Zuñiga, LAPD. Zuñiga is a proud single father of two (4yr old) and (1 and a half year old) “They motivate me to do everything I do” Zuñiga said.
This UCA Jr Middleweight is trained by Isaac & Ivan Zarate at the Dinamita Boxing Gym located in San Pedro, CA. The gym has one small ring which forces fighters to engage and not dance around when sparring. The gym also has heavy bags, speedbags double end bags weights and plenty of floor space for skipping rope and mitt work. The gym provides plenty of sparring for Zuniga. Last week he sparred 8 rounds with professional undefeated fighter (13-0) Chris Alvidrez. Zuñiga showed great balance and cardio against Alvidrez. Zuñiga’s movement, combinations, the placement of his feet, hips, and shoulders is like a work of art. His technical knowledge and biomechanical foundations, are reminiscent of Bugarin, Sheklanian and Stevens who are perhaps 3 of the most talented fighters in the UCA. Don’t miss Jesse Zuñiga trade leather with Mikel Haggett, United States Forest Service -Smoke Jumper, Saturday April 2, 2022 at the Central California Battle of the Badges, Visalia Convention Center. With support from Steven Ho, and Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions, the gym has been a go-to spot for Los Angeles media workouts, as well as a secluded LA training center for world-class fighters including Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Victor Ortiz, Sugar Shane Mosley, Marcos Maidana, and many others. The UCA talks with professional boxing and MMA trainer Eloy Garza, about training Javier Robles, Tulare Sheriffs Dept for his ring debut April 2, 2022.

UCA  – When did training camp start for Javier’s fight?

EG – Training camp began for Javier mid December.

UCA – How many days a week does Javier train and spar?

EG – We do floor work 2 days a week and sparring one day a week.

UCA – Have you taken Javier to any other gyms for sparring?

EG – We usually spar at Hanford PAL where we get really good work from young, strong, fast active boxers.

UCA – Is stablemate Jason Stingley, Pismo Beach Police Dept. Javier’s main sparring partner?

EG – Jason is one of many sparring partners. Jason has been a great mentor for Javier. During training sessions, he gives him insight as to how relax and set up his punches

UCA – Is Robles a hard worker in the gym?

EG – I’ve never had to ask Javier to pick up the pace in training. His pride doesn’t allow him to just pace himself. Conditioning wise he can keep up with my 130lb teenagers. Undergoing an identical training regimen to my active fighters is a plus for Javier. He has not missed a single training session.

UCA – Are you pleased with Javier’s development as a fighter?

EG – I’m really impressed with his ability to take instructions and implement them immediately. We have really focused on building a well balanced foundation. He has learned to punch from a balanced position and remain on balance after punching. I think that will be the biggest difference in this fight. Javier understands the importance of balance and will make his opponent pay for sloppy mistakes.

Javier Robles, Tulare Sheriffs Dept will go head to head with John Olson, CDCR Avenal State Prison in a Super Heavyweight matchup. Dylan Hicks, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept seems to possess championship potential and is prepared to make a huge statement next Saturday night and put himself in position to fight for a title. To get to the top of the division he will have to get through Marcel Hernandez, CDCR Avenal State Prison. Hicks answered a few questions about training camp, preparation, stablemates and his prediction for the fight.

UCA – How has training camp been preparing for your fight with Hernandez?

DH – Training camp for this fight has been going extremely well. The chemistry between my coach (fighter/trainer Abran Rodriguez) and I has reached a higher level and I find that I’m able to box better than I ever have before.

UCA – How many days a week are you training?

DH – I’m taking Hernandez very seriously so I’m training about 5-6 times a week

UCA – How often are you sparring?

DH – I’ve been sparring a steady 2-3 times a week on average

UCA – Who are some of your stablemates or sparring partners for this training camp?

DH – I’m training with fighters from LASD, Burbank PD, and CO’s from the Antelope Valley, with the majority being heavyweights. Fighters like April Fonseca, Darnell Strigglers, Lance Martinez, Manuel Martinez and others.

UCA – Aside from training at Brickhouse Boxing Gym have you trained or sparred at any other gyms?

DH – Other than Brickhouse I spend a lot of time at our local gym next to the Wayside Jail in Castaic, with the LASD Boxing Team.

UCA – When is your last day of sparring?

DH – As far as hard sparring, the last day will be early next week. I usually let my coach do the planning as far as my training. He always knows what’s good for me as far as what I need to work on and spend my time developing.

UCA – Do u have a prediction for your fight with Hernandez?

DH – As far as a prediction for the fight, I’m always eager for a finish. My last fight was a TKO victory for me and I’m looking for another one. However I’m fully prepared for a 3 round war with Hernandez, and I know he’s coming for the same thing.
