The fighters were photographed as they worked out and talked about the upcoming April 11, 2015 event at the Hanford Civic Auditorium. The main event of this UCA Triple Header features a high octane super heavyweight championship fight between two of the best and most athletic super heavyweights in the state. The UCA Light Heavyweight Champion Kyle Stewart, USMC is leaving the amateur ranks and will be testing his skills as a professional fighter. Stewart is the UCA Champion and King of the Cage Champion and will be looking to make a name for himself as an MMA fighter in Bellator and the UFC. Before Stewart turns professional he will represent Arizona in the Elite Amateur Fight League.  The UCA wishes Mr. Stewart luck in his professional endeavors.

The Elite Amateur Fight League is a nationally competitive team based MMA organization comprised of individual teams to form a league. Each team is made up of 7 fighters, one per weight class. The format is similar to the most successful sports leagues in America. In season one, 4 teams will participate in a playoff style tournament to determine a champion. The league is designed to improve the amateur MMA landscape by providing a platform for national level talent to compete against each other and gain national level exposure while providing fans of the sport a single portal to watch the future stars of mixed martial arts.

UCA Fight of the Night: Awarded to Pierce Masse, Fresno Police Dept. and Iulia Tuua, CDCR, Mule Creek Prison. Two fighters who delivered the most action packed, back and forth, edge of your seat excitement.  Masse and Tuua gave the fans just about everything they could want from a fight. They were tested and proved they are true modern day gladiators.

These UCA champions have pushed public safety boxing to new heights and opened the door to credibly and validation. Becoming a UCA champion is the benchmark of public safety boxing success. These fighters have the make up, personality traits and the character to handle the adversity, risks, challenges, and setbacks in life and in the ring. 2014 UCA Year in review

Public safety boxing put an exclamation point on 2014 with some amazing events and great fights. The fighters are transitioning into a new breed of super athlete that is elevating boxing and showing how far public safety boxing has evolved. The various Battle of the Badges events throughout California this year gave fans excitement, anticipation, high skill level fights, unpredictable outcomes, undiscovered talent, new challengers, and new champions. The Battle of the Badges is the biggest amateur boxing event with capacity crowds reaching between 1000-4000 for each show. The Battle of the Badges continues to expand by bringing out more fans and the next generation of fighters. With the popularity of public safety boxing, fans and fighters have to be excited about the 2015 season.

UCA Promoter of the Year 

Mike Young, (LASD Retired) put on two of the biggest events of the year. The LA Battle of the Badges featured the biggest names in public safety boxing and made for one of the most talent stacked cards of recent years.  The card featured 4 UCA State Championship Title fights and future championship contenders.  Two months later Mr. Young out did himself with a bigger crowd and more exciting fights at the Fight for Life event which benefited the City of Hope Children’s Hospital.

Event of the Year

The Central California Battle of the Badges turned out to be a major magnitude event. It was the first Battle of the Badges to be held in Central California. The doors were blown off from the excitement and energy in the auditorium. The show was a huge success and has now become an annual event.

All eyes were on the squared circle Friday night at the Quiet Cannon for the 21st annual Fight for Life charity boxing event. The near capacity crowd got their money’s worth as fighters from LAPD and LASD displayed their talent, heart, grit and will to win until the final bell.

Bout 1 (154lbs) David Chung, LASD vs Aldo Rodriguez, LAPD. A more experienced Chung kept Rodriguez on the outside throughout the fight by landing jabs, left hooks, & the occasional right hand. What Rodriguez lacked in experience, he made up for with persistence & courage, and kept coming forward. Both men showed great sportsmanship throughout the fight. Chung winner by decision.

Bout 2 (168lbs) Hector Mendoza, LAPD vs. Jonathan Virgen, YAL (Ponce De Leon Gym). Mendoza displayed really good skill, switching up from orthodox to southpaw, confusing Virgen at times. Mendoza fought a tactical fight and landed the cleaner, harder shots. But Virgen was the busier fighter of the two; throwing punches in bunches all through the fight. This fight could’ve gone either way, but Virgen would get the nod from the judges due to his volume punching. Virgen winner by decision.

Bout 3 (175lbs) Mike Hernandez, LASD vs Brendy Ponce, LAPD. Both fighters came out displaying much skill & experience. Ponce would look to land his killer right hand while Hernandez moved and boxed, catching Ponce on the way in with a well-timed jab & left hook. Ponce would have some success early on landing some solid 1, 2’s and using effective head movement, but the difference in the fight was Hernandez’ quick combinations and footwork. Both fighters would earn each other’s respect & that of the crowd’s. Hernandez winner by split decision.

Bout 4 (190lbs) Mario Perez, LASD vs. Louis Garcia, YAL (Ponce De Leon Gym). Garcia would win the 1st round by keeping the power-punching Perez on the outside with his jab & his footwork. Perez would come back to land the cleaner combos & harder punches the rest of the fight. Perez winner by decision.

Bout 5 (175lbs) Remin Pineda, LASD vs. Chris Andrade, LAPD.  Pineda showed experience & boxing skills, and flustered a very green Andrade with clean combinations. Andrade who is taller & has a longer reach seemed more intent on mixing it up with Pineda…to his detriment. A standing 8-count would be given to Andrade in the beginning of the 1st. In the 2nd round, Andrade came out applying his jab & 1, 2 combo. He utilized his height & reach advantage over a shorter, yet confident Pineda. LAPD corner must’ve urged Andrade to do so during the 1 minute break. Andrade would finish the round by keeping an aggressive Pineda at the end of his punches and landed more shots. At the start of the 3rd, Andrade came out with a renewed sense of confidence…being cheered on & pumped up by the sizable crowd there to see him. Chants of “Metro! Metro!” (Division) heard. Both fighters started out with some flurries & went toe to toe for a bit, but Andrade had more in the tank. Andrade then caught a slower & more winded Pineda with a solid straight right that sent him back into the ropes. Standing 8-count given to Pineda. Though fatigue had set in on both fighters, they went at it full tilt to end the 3rd. The fight would end with loud crowd approval. It could’ve easily gone either way. Early “Fight of the Night” candidate. Pineda winner by split decision.

Bout 6 (175lbs) Jake Ching, LA Co. FD vs. Gerardo Pachuca, LASD. Both fighters would have their moments. Pachuka was game and gave it his all, but the difference was Ching’s cleaner boxing combinations, footwork, and conditioning. Ching winner by decision.

Bout 7 (132lbs) Dre Fonseca, LAPD vs. Marina Lizarraga, LASD. An action-packed fight from the get-go! Both fighters flew out of the gate, firing fast & furious 1, 2’s at each other for the entire first 20 seconds of the fight! Fonseca ducked, used quick lateral movement, & angles to avoid Lizarraga’s longer reach. Fonseca would then land the stiffer jabs & cleaner right hands all through the 2nd. Very loud chants of “Li-za-rra-ga!” & “Dre! Dre! Dre!” heard throughout the ballroom. Lizarraga would have her best round in the 3rd, landing hooks & uppercuts as Fonseca made her way in. These ladies set out to prove they were warriors and fought fast & hard to the end. The amount of heart they displayed was tremendous! At the final bell, the crowd rose to their feet. Their roar was loud & deafening. Both fighters brought with them their fair share of fans, and would make many more by the time the fight finished. Fonseca winner by decision. This bout would receive “Fight of the Night” honors.

Bout 8 (154lbs) Eddie Montano, LAPD vs. Brandon Manning, LASD. Two fighters with contrasting styles. Manning used his mauling, brawling style to stay busy in the clinch and tie Montano up all fight long. Montano wasn’t able to shake Manning off him to get the space he needed to get off his combinations. Manning winner by decision.

Bout 9 (230lbs) Bert Castaneda, LAPD vs. Manny  Amaya, LASD. Puncher vs. boxer. Castaneda tried to land some hard right hands & left hooks early on.  Amaya used his range to keep on the outside & tied Castaneda up on the inside to stay out of danger. Amaya was the busier fighter. He used good footwork and landed more punches. Castaneda would land a few good bombs of his own in the 3rd, but it wasn’t enough to catch up. Amaya winner by decision.

The greatest rivalry in Public Safety boxing returns to the Quiet Cannon, Friday November 14, 2014 for the Fight for Life charity boxing event. The Fight for Life is a unique event that features a highly competitive, yet friendly rivalry between boxers from the Los Angeles Police Dept. and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept. to raise money for the City of Hope Children’s Hospital. These selfless fighters understand the bigger picture, which is helping others, and the residents of Los Angeles have taken notice as the event has continually grown in popularity. The Los Angeles Police Department and Sheriff’s Department have been keeping this tradition going for years  and unlike their professional counterparts, they fight for a selfless cause—charity. Over the years the rivalry has been a balanced one with both teams winning their fair share of fights. Currently, the LASD team has the stronger team, but not long ago it was LAPD that was the powerhouse amid the competition. The intensity of the rivalry varies from a friendly competition to a more serious one when top level fighters compete.  The spirit of competition far exceeds any expectation one could have for such a noble cause. The Fight for Life event is really something to watch and Friday night will be nothing short of another exciting night of public safety boxing action featuring top flight talent.

Another huge success for the SoCal Battle of the Badges. Ten epic fights produced a great night of Public Safety boxing entertainment Saturday night at the Pala Casino Spa Resort. The Co Main event featured a UCA Light Heavyweight Championship Title fight between 2^nd ranked Jamaal Brathwaite, Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. vs. “King of the Cage Champion” Kyle Stewart, USMC. The Main event featured the #1 ranked Cruiserweight Travon Taylor, Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. vs. Nick Herstine, Security Officer.

There is a new force in the light heavyweight division and his name is Kyle Stewart United States Marine Corps. Stewart seized the moment with a perfectly landed one two punch combination ten seconds into the 3^rd round to become the new UCA Light Heavyweight Champion. It was a chess match of a fight leading up to the stoppage. The first two rounds were fought perfectly by both fighters. Brathwaite and Stewart strategically set up each move and were never out of position. When the bell sounded to start the 3^rd round both fighters came forward and Stewart saw a slight opening and threw a jab, right hand that landed right on target. Brathwaite would hit the canvas but he is a warrior and is most dangerous when he is hurt. He has proved he can get off the canvas and turn the fight around. Although Brathwaite beat the count and wanted to continue the referee called a halt to the bout. Stewart winner 3^rd round TKO.

Also in action was the #1 ranked Travon Taylor, Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. returning to ring on the heels of a major setback in his career losing by split decision to the UCA Cruiserweight Champion Brian Stevens, LASD. Taylor got back to his winning ways by defeating the hungry Nick Herstine, Security Officer.  There could be a light heavyweight dream fight on the horizon. Team Taylor is in discussions of having Travon drop down to the light heavyweight division and challenging the New UCA Champion Kyle Stewart, USMC in the SoCal Battle of the Badges in March, 2015.

Big time UCA Championship boxing marks  this  dream fight match up. The UCA Light Heavyweight  Championship  belt will be up for grabs when Jamaal Brathwaite, Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. faces King of the Cage Champion, Kyle Stewart, United States Marine Corps. Saturday night’s encounter between 2nd ranked, Jamaal Brathwaite, Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. and Kyle Stewart, USMC promises to be a special one. The talk and  training is over, it’s time to fight. It won’t be easy, both fighters will be tested and pushed harder than ever before but the fighter who makes it out on the other side will have their hand raised in victory and claim the title of best light heavyweight in California.  Stewart is 8-1 and the King of the Cage Champion.  Brathwaite is the 2^nd ranked Cruiserweight and carries a 5-2 record. Regardless of the records, the height, the age or experience these guys are warriors and want to compete against the best. Both fighters are coming into this fight with momentum. Stewart is coming off his King of the Cage title defense win September 16, 2014. The UCA title fight agreement contracts are signed for the most intriguing title fight to date. Former UCA Cruiserweight title challenger Jamaal Braithwaite, Orange County Sheriff’s Office returns to the ring for another shot at boxing glory. On October 18, 2014 in the SoCal Battle of the Badges, Brathwaite will face Kyle Stewart, United States Marine Corps for the UCA Light Heavyweight Championship Title. Brathwaite is relinquishing his Cruiserweight 2nd ranking and dropping down to the Light Heavyweight division to challenge (8-1) King of the Cage champion and Battle of the Badges newcomer Stewart. The UCA title that was once held by James Davis, Folsom Prison and Matt Wurdinger, Santa Clara Police Dept. Brathwaite will be returning to the ring after a 14 month lay off and isn’t looking at this fight as a comeback fight, it’s more like a breakout fight. 175lbs is Brathwaite’s natural weight and if he can sneak past Steward he may be the Light Heavyweight King for a long time. Brathwaite vs Stewart is a very intriguing matchup. Brathwaite is a top level boxer and Stewart is a top level MMA fighter. The question on a lot of people’s minds will be answered Saturday night can an MMA fighter beat a boxer? The Square Vision, UCA Capital City Explosion, Battle of the Badges event lived up to the hype and expectations, delivering the fans an action packed night of professional and amateur boxing. The lineup looked fantastic on paper, and proved to be even better when the fighters stepped into the ring. High-level boxing, great technique, unmatched athleticism, knockouts and come-from-behind victories. It was a special card and a great night of fights that raised money for Multiple Scleroses, Race to Erase MS. This card is going to be tough to beat. Not only was the card stacked with amateur and professional talent, tickets were sold at an unbelievable price of $25.00 for General Admission and $40.00 for Ringside. The fighters were competing for more than a victory they were fighting to help find a cure for MS. Eight very proud Public Safety fighters were on the card and they did not disappoint.

The first UCA fight featured Josh Webb, CHP vs. Battle of the Badges newcomer Jason Gutknecht, Madera Police Dept. Webb’s game plan was to keep the fight on the outside and keep Gutknecht on defense by throwing a lot of punches. Gutknecht’s plan was to find a home for his powerful straight left hand. Webb would execute his game plan first landing a straight right hand scoring a flash knockdown.  Gutknecht would get right up and continue to come forward. Gutknecht had his moments and was most effective when he worked behind his jab.  Gutknecht seemed to slow down half way through the 2nd round and Webb began to pull away out working Gutknecht. Webb boxed brilliantly on the outside with good footwork, head movement and mixing up his punches to the body and head.  Webb winner by decision.

The energy and excitement was at its peak when Super Heavyweights Pierce Masse, Fresno Police Dept. and Iulia Tuua, CDCR, Mule Creek Prison squared off. This is the one everyone was waiting for.  As soon as the bell sounded Tuua came straight at Masse with deadly intent.  Tuua caught Masse with a hard shot in the first round and it looked like it this fight would be done in one. Masse would receive a standing 10 count. When the fight resumed Masse stayed on the outside looking to establish his jab and keep Tuua at a safe distance. Masse would land a good combination before Tuua would close the distance and land another devastating blow. Tuua has horseshoes in his gloves and whatever he hits, he destroys.  The referee would step in again and take a good look at Masse as he gave him a standing 10 count. The three knockdown rule was in effect and one more knock down and the fight is over.   Masse would survive the first round but was in serious trouble. Masse did some good work in the round but was clearly behind on the score cards. Masse’s trainer Bryan Williams, Fresno PD pleaded with his fighter to not sit in front of Tuua and to move and box. Masse started the 2nd round on steady legs, boxing and moving like a lightweight.  Tuua was visibly exhausted in the 2^nd round and tried to land a big punch before he ran out of gas completely. Masse would press the action and catch Tuua with a 3 punch combination against the ropes but Tuua was too tired to answer back prompting the referee to step in and call a halt to the bout. Pierce winner 2^nd rd TKO. What a fight!  Not only did Tuna and Masse steal the show, they also picked up “Fight of the Night” honors. These two gladiators will meet again.

Josh Tann, Cal Fire vs Chris Anaya, Roseville Fire Dept. featured two evenly matched fighters with the same skill set. Who would impose their will on the other?  Round one and two were very close. Both fighters threw and landed the same amount of punches. Even fight going into the 3rd round whoever comes out hard, wins the fight. Anaya would initiate the action and come forward throwing three punches to Tann’s one.  Tann and Anaya made it a tough fight for the judges at ringside to score.  Anaya would pick up the decision win due to his offensive output in the 3rd round.

And the New….

Congratulations to Chris Lewis, Fresno Sheriff’s Dept. on becoming the new UCA Super Heavyweight State Champion. Chris Lewis took on Zeke Johnston, (civilian) Security Officer in Saturday night’s UCA Main Event. Both fighters came out hard at each other to start the fight. The pace would eventually slow down and Lewis would find his openings and land some clean shots against the hard charging Johnston. Johnston gave a good account of himself against the younger fighter but Lewis was just too good.  Lewis moved comfortably around the ring working angles and mixing up his punches. Lewis finished strong landing a straight right hand forcing the referee to take a close look at Johnston and administer a standing 10 count. When the bell sounded to end the fight Lewis would pick up a three-round unanimous decision win over the grizzled veteran Zeke Johnston.  With the win, Lewis remains perfect and claims the UCA Super Heavyweight State Championship Strap. The win also sets up an earth shattering blockbuster Super Heavyweight State Championship title fight against Pierce Masse, Fresno Police Dept. in the Central California Battle of the Badges April, 11, 2015 at the Civic Auditorium.

It was a huge night for public safety boxing as UCA fighters competed on the same card a professional fighters and perhaps future world champions. The public safety fighters did not disappoint and earned respect from the professional fighters and the fans.

In a shocking development #1 ranked, Mike Gomez, CDCR, CHCF pulls himself from title fight.  Gomez was scheduled to fight last minute replacement 9th ranked Chris Lewis, Fresno Sheriff’s Dept. for the vacant UCA Super Heavyweight Championship Title. Gomez had a physical on Monday and his blood pressure was high and did not want to risk his health in Saturday night’s title fight at the Red Lion Woodlake Hotel.  When Lewis heard the news he said, “Find me an opponent, I want to fight.” No other challengers were available to fight with 4 days notice except two time Battle of the Badges civilian fill in fighter Zeke Johnston.  When Johnston was asked to fight he said, “It’s short notice but I’m a competitor I want the challenge, lets do it, I’m in.”  Both fighters guarantee to give the fans a great show.

UCA-You and Tuua both played college football. You played for Fresno State and Tuua played for Cal Poly. Did you ever play against him?

PM-I never played against Tuua in college.

PM-Tuua looks like a strong guy but ill have the edge on speed.

PM-I’m prepared for a 3 round fight. My conditioning is good right now.

UCA- How has the process been preparing for the fight with work and family?

TUUA-It has been really tough.  Family is always first on my priority list.  I have been fortunate enough to have a wife that is very supportive in anything I do.  She takes really good care of our 3 kids and everything at home-along with a full-time job as a teacher.  She also holds me accountable for my work outs.  Work is extremely busy, as we are going through lots of changes.  I am also an assistant football coach at Bradshaw Christian School in Elk Grove.  So, with all that and training for this fight, it has been extremely difficult.

UCA-How many days a week are you getting to the gym to train?

TUUA-I train 3 days a week at the gym with my coach James Dorris.

UCA-Are you doing any unique or crazy training to prepare for the fight?

TUUA- Yes.  I am currently going through a training called “Warrior Training” that is also put together by my coach.  I don’t know how to explain the training, but it’s really tough.

UCA-Is it tough finding sparring partners your size?

TUUA-Yes.

UCA-Who are some of your sparring partners?

TUUA- My coach James “Lights Out” Dorris, my brother-in-law Bobby Brooks and a fellow co-worker and a participant of previous Battle of the Badges, Charlie Heintschel.

UCA-Do you feel you have any advantages over Masse?  

TUUA- It’s hard to tell.  I have a great coach, great sparring partners and I have been training really hard.  I guess we’ll find out on October 11^th.

UCA-You and Masse both played college football. You played for Cal Poly and Masse played for Fresno State. Did you ever play against him?

TUUA- We did not have the opportunity to play against each other, but it would have made this fight a little more interesting if we did.

UCA-Based on Masse’s training video do you feel your skills match up with his?

TUUA-Definitely.  You have two big athletic guys that can bang.  I think we match up really well.

UCA-Will you be training on anything specific in preparation for Masse?

TUUA-No, I will just continue to train the same way I have been training.

In a stunning development, the Super Heavyweight State Champion Cleon Jones, Yolo County Sheriff’s Dept. withdraws from the October 11, 2014 Battle of the Badges main event. Cleon Jones was scheduled to make the second defense of his UCA title against #1 ranked Mike Gomez, CDCR, CHCF but suffered an injury in training and was forced to pull out of the fight. Due to this unforeseen development the UCA is put into a position to adjust the rankings and announce a new division.

Moving forward into the 2015 boxing season the UCA will be creating a Masters Division. The UCA Masters Division will go beyond commonly accepted boundaries of Public Safety boxing and provide a division for boxers 40 years old and over. Due to the increased interest in fighters competing over the age of 40, it has become necessary to create this division to ensure even matches and fighter safety. Masters boxers will compete against other Masters boxers and have the same opportunity to fight for the UCA Championship Title as open fighters.

Cleon Jones, 44 years old will become the Masters Division Super Heavyweight Champion and the Open Super Heavyweight title will be vacant. The LA Battle of the Badges Main Event featured another LASD vs LAPD rivalry.  #1, Mike Frazier, LASD vs 5^th ranked Bert Castaneda, LAPD for the UCA Heavyweight Championship Title. It was clear to everyone Castaneda needed to make it a pressure filled grinding fight if he wanted to defeat the undefeated #1 ranked Frazier. Frazier is as slick as they come and may be equipped with the fastest hands and best footwork in the game. Castaneda had his moments and was most effective when he drove Frazier back to the ropes with pressure and a barrage of punches.  Frazier would use his jab and elusiveness to stay out of danger. The first two rounds were tough to score and the title was up for grabs going into the third and final round. Castaneda would land some thundering overhand rights but Frazier’s experience, ring generalship and ability to control the fight sealed the win for him. With the win Frazier keeps is record unblemished, solidifies his spot as the best Heavyweight in the country and becomes the new UCA Heavyweight Champion. Moving forward the fight that makes the most sense for Frazier’s first title defense is 3^rd ranked, Ryan Hotchkiss, Barstow Police Dept.  Just the thought of a potential bout between Frazier and Hotchkiss has public safety boxing fans excited.

The Quiet Cannon is a hot bed for boxing and has been showcasing Public Safety boxing talent since it opened its doors. Friday night was nothing short of another exciting night of boxing featuring the best Public Safety fighters in the game. This card was amazing to watch. The LA Battle of the Badges will go down in history as the most talent stacked cards. Aside from 4 UCA Championship Title fights there were six, #1 ranked fighters, one, 4^th ranked fighter, three 5^th ranked fighters and one 8^th ranked fighter.  What a night of boxing.

The reigning and defending State Champion Brian Stevens, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept. retained his United Combat Association Cruiserweight State Championship Title, by defeating Orange County Sheriff’s Dept.  #1 ranked Travon Taylor by split decision Friday night in the LA Battle of the Badges Co Main Event. The anticipation was at an all-time high for this fight. This first round was a chess match with both fighters looking for openings and opportunities.  Stevens seemed to find his rhythm in the second round with range, movement and landing punches with razor sharp accuracy. Stevens would land the cleaner more effective punches throughout the fight.  Taylor would push the pace and keep the pressure on but couldn’t land anything significant enough to stop Stevens’s momentum. This was high level stuff between two highly skilled intelligent fighters in the physical prime of their careers.  The fighters lived up to the hype surrounding this fight. Brian Stevens proved that he may be one of the best public safety boxing has ever known.  Stevens continues to work on his craft and work harder than everyone else.  As Stevens awaits his next opponent it poses the question, can anyone stop him?

The first two title fights of the night featured two long overdue rematches between four of the best fighters in California.

UCA Jr Middleweight State Championship Title Fight. #1 Dustin Rodriguez, Santa Monica Fire Dept vs. #2 Eddie Montano, LAPD. Rodriguez and Montano can both take a bow in what was a tremendous fight between two hungry warriors looking for validation as the best Jr Middleweight in California. Both fighters put on an excellence performance. Rodriguez proved that even in one of the toughest fights of his career he remains at the top of the division. After three hard fought rounds Rodriguez would emerge as the new UCA Jr. Middleweight State Champion.

UCA Super Middleweight State Championship Title Fight. #1 ranked, Matthew Pereida, LASD vs. 2nd ranked, Aurelio Vasquez, LAPD. When the bell rang Vasquez got off to a blazing start pressuring and throwing punches in bunches. Pereida would turn the tide in the 2nd and 3rd round with constant pressure and matching Vasquez output. This fight was about who can break the other man’s unbreakable will. Pereida and Vasquez pushed past their breaking point, back and forth, give and take for three nonstop rounds.  Both fighters faced the biggest adversity of their career and showed tremendous courage. Pereida and Vasquez have something special inside them that can’t be explained. In the end Pereida would scratch and crawl his way to victory. Pereida  would earn the UCA Super Middleweight Title with sheer determination. This was a legendary fight that will not be forgotten.

What a night of action at the LA Battle of the Badges Friday night September 26, 2014. The Quiet Cannon provided a perfect stage that featured 4 epic UCA State Championship Title fights.  A record crowd was in attendance as the SoCal fans were treated to the best public safety boxing event in recent years.

The night started off with two, # 1 ranked fighters from different weight classes. #1 ranked lightweight Daniel Ramirez, LAPD vs. #1 ranked Jr Welterweight Larry Cervantes, LASD.  These warriors believe in their skills and fighting out of their weight class is no problem. Ramirez had the skills advantage while Cervantes had the power advantage. The action went back and forth until Cervantes landed a left hook that sent Ramirez to the canvas. Ramirez would beat the count but referee Pat Connolly would step in and stop the fight at 1:59 of the first round. Cervantes, winner 1st rd. TKO.

Bout 2 featured 5th ranked Brandon Manning, LASD vs. newcomer Connor Bauman, Los Angeles Co. Fire Dept.  Ten seconds into the fight it did not look like this fight would go the distance. Manning brought his warrior mentality and tenacious style into the ring and Bauman did a good job of keeping his composure and holding his ground.  Both fighters were landing and taking hard shots until the bell sounded to end the fight. This bout would be decided by the judges. Bauman would get the nod and pick up his first win and begin his climb to the top of the division.

Bout 3 featured the return of 2011 Police Olympic Gold Medalist Joseph Flahavan, Glendale Fire Dept. vs. 5th ranked Jose Corral, LASD. This bout was marked by high level technical boxing between two evenly matched fighters with identical skills. Spectacular infighting and beautiful combinations were delivered throughout the fight by both fighters. Flahavan was a little more polished working on the inside and was getting the better of the exchanges in close. Both fighters had their moments, landing big shots upstairs and down stairs but in the end Flahavan was the fresher of the two and was able stay busy. Flahavan winner by decision victory. There is no doubt Flahavan and Corral have the qualities of becoming a champion.   

Bout 4 featured 8^th ranked Bill Evangelista, Big Bear City FD vs David Chung, LASD. Evangelista had the clear height and reach advantage and looked to take advantage of it staying on the outside and keeping Chung at the end of his punches. Chung would close the distance and have his moments. In the end the judges would see the fight in Evangelista’s favor. Evangelista winner by decision.

Bout 5 Jesse Zaranaga, LASD vs 4th ranked Brian Petrella, Pasadena Police Dept. When the bell rang Zaranaga came out and found his range early landing some nice shots right on target. Petrella was coming forward with defense as a second thought. What Petrella hits, he destroys and he was more willing to take two to land one. Zaranaga would land the cleanest shot of the fight, a right hand that caught Petrella on the button. Petrella would momentarily lose his balance and the referee would step in and give Petrella a standing 8 count. After 3 exciting rounds were completed Zaranaga’s hand was raised in victory.

The official weigh-ins for the LA Battle of the Badges took place earlier today. All the fighters made weight and looked in tremendous shape. In the main event, Mike Frazier, LASD will take on Bert Castanada, LAPD for the Heavyweight State Title.  The Champion, Brian Stevens, LASD and Travon Taylor, OCSO will meet in the co-main event for the Cruiserweight State Title. Matthew Pereida, LASD will square off with Aurelio Vasquez, LAPD for the Super Middleweight title. Rounding out this UCA State Championship night will be Dustin Rodriguez, Santa Monica FD vs Eddie Montano, LAPD for the Jr Middleweight State Title. On Friday, September 26, 2014 the LA Battle of the Badges returns to The Quiet Cannon for a night of UCA Championship boxing. “Battle for the Belt” with 4 UCA Championship titles on the line.
The main event of the night will feature the undisputed reigning and defending UCA Cruiserweight Champion Brian Stevens, LASD vs #1 ranked Travon Taylor, Orange County Sheriff’s Office. The co- featured bout of the night will be the #1 ranked undefeated Mike Frazier, LASD vs #5 Bert Castaneda, LAPD for the UCA Heavyweight Championship Title.  The 3rd UCA Championship Title Fight will feature one of the most anticipated rematches of the year. #1 ranked Matthew Pereida, LASD vs #2 Aurelio Vasquez, LAPD for the UCA Super Middleweight Title. Josh Webb, California Highway Patrol CHP showed off his skills in a light training session at Niavaroni’s Kickboxing Gym Friday in Roseville, California. Webb has one MMA fight in the Alemeda Battle of the Badges (May 12, 2012) defeating Gene Gabriel, SFPD and is looking forward to stepping into the ring for the first time as a boxer. Webb is a friendly, respectful fighter who is ready to test his skills as a boxer. Although Webb currently does not have an opponent for the upcoming Battle of the Badges he is training under the watchful eye of world championship trainer Nasser Niavaroni in hopes that an opponent is found.

On Friday September 26, 2014 the LA Battle of the Badges will be headlined by two of  the best fighters in the state when they battle it out for  the UCA Cruiserweight State Championship. Brian Stevens,  LASD, the reigning and defending Champion will put his title on the line and test his skills against #1 ranked, Travon Taylor, (10-1) Orange County  Sheriff’s Office.  The UCA caught up with the  Cruiserweight Champion to ask him a few questions about his  upcoming fight.

UCA – How is training going at Henry Tillman’s Boxing Gym?

BS – Training has been great! Tillman’s gym is filled with talented pro fighters. Training alongside those guys every day is going to take me to another level.

UCA – Have you had the opportunity to spar or train beside any top pros or top  amateurs at the gym?

BS –Yes. There is more access to quality sparring that we’ve ever had.

UCA – You will be defending your title against another #1 ranked fighter. Do you feel this  will be your toughest challenge?

BS –I always prepare as if I am the underdog. From what I have seen, he looks to be a very experienced and talented boxer, so he should be my toughest opponent yet.

UCA – Are you preparing for a tough grinding fight?

BS –We just focus on working hard and getting better every day. I condition myself to grind if need be, but I prepare to make the fight easier than the training.

UCA – Do you feel you have the style to beat Taylor?

BS –Yes.

UCA – Are you sparring with guys similar to Taylor’s style and stature? 

BS -Yes.

UCA – Do you feel Taylor brings something to the ring that you have never dealt with before?

BS –I think it is going to be more of a true boxing match than I have had in the past. He likes to counter punch and box. I think that our styles should make for a good show.

UCA – Is your training camp more intense compared to your other training camps?

BS –Yes. I am always pushing to work harder, learn more, and get better. I know I have my toughest challenge ahead of me so I am going to have to bring it!

UCA – Are you working on anything specific in training camp to prepare for your fight  with Taylor?

BS –Not really. We just work to get better and do what we do best. Hopefully he will be the one who needs to adjust.

UCA – Do you feel you have any advantages over Taylor?

BS -Like I say, I like to think of myself as the underdog, but I always know I have the best trainer.

UCA – Is there anything that worries you about Taylor?

BS –No.

UCA – Do you feel the fight will be a back and forth battle where you are both tested?

BS –Definitely.

UCA – If the fight is close going into the 3rd round will you come hard and push the pace to win the round?

BS -I always try to push harder than I am being pushed. I want to win every round.

UCA – Will you have to put on the best performance of your career to keep your title?

BS –I believe so.

UCA – How do you see the fight ending?

BS – And still…
