The UCA Jr Middleweight Championship title fight between Mike Delery, Los Angeles Police Dept and Dusty Rodriguez, Santa Monica Fire Dept was canceled at the scale this morning. The UCA Welterweight Champion Mike Delery was moving up to the Jr Middleweight division to take on the #1 ranked Dusty Rodriguez in an attempt to pick up his 2nd title. In a stunning development the #1 ranked Rodriguez was unable to attend the official weigh in due to a family obligation and safety concerns about the weigh in. Rodriguez said, “I will not weigh in the day of the fight. Its unhealthy for anyone to wait until a few hours before competing without proper hydration and food intake” Delery came in 3 pounds under the contracted weight of 154 pounds. The UCA Jr Middleweight title will remain vacant.

On Saturday August 18, 2018 the UCA #1 ranked Remin Pineda, Los Angeles Sheriff Dept will take on #3 Kellen Kramer, Bell Gardens Police Dept for the UCA Middleweight Championship title. The UCA caught up with Remin to ask him a few questions about his upcoming fight with Kramer.

UCA – What gym are you training at to prepare for this fight?
RP – I have been training at several gyms: Sityodtong Los Angeles, Crossfit La Verne, Wildcard Boxing Club, and the Century YAL.

UCA – Who is your coach?
RP – I have several coaches I work with: Carlos De La Torre, Wilson Oh, Teddy Martinez, and Willie “Birdlegs” Jenson.

UCA – When did you start training camp?
RP – I train all year long and usually pick it up approximately 1 to 1 1/2 months left.

UCA – How often are you training to prepare for the fight?
RP – 6 days a week, I’m am always doing something, whether it be boxing technique, conditioning, or sparring.

UCA – Has your training camp been more intense compared to other training camps?
RP – Yes, always trying to learn more and improve my conditioning.

UCA – Are you doing any unique training during this camp? Swimming, CrossFit, Yoga
RP – Crossfit and airdyne bike/interval training. 

UCA – Are you preparing for a tough grinding fight?
RP – Yes, I have sparred with Kramer in the past and know he is a tough fighter and has power.

UCA – Do you have plenty of sparring partners at your gym or do you have to travel to other gyms for sparring?
RP – I do have many different sparring partners with all types of backgrounds. Another reason why I travel to different gyms to train with different styles.

UCA – On paper this is a 50-50 fight. If you feel the fight is close going into the 3rd round will you come out hard and push the pace to win the round?
RP – Always.

UCA – Do you feel the fight will be a back and forth battle where you are both tested?
RP – Yes, Kramer is a brawler much like I am, however I will need to rely more on boxing to overcome him.

UCA – There is a famous quote in boxing.. Don’t leave it in the hands of the judges. What does that mean to you?
RP – Get that knockout/TKO! I feel I have been cheated before (as well as opponents I’ve fought) and blame no one but myself for not finishing my opponent.

UCA – How do you imagine this fight going?
RP – I can foresee a TKO by one of us. We both have power and it can go either way, prepare for “Fight of the Night!”

On Saturday August 18, 2018 the undefeated 3rd ranked Kellen Kramer, Bell Gardens Police Dept will challenge the #1 ranked Remin Pineda, Los Angeles Sheriff’ Dept for the UCA Middleweight Championship title. UCA – Has your training camp been more intense compared to other training camps?
KK – This has definitely been the most intense training camp so far, as this is our biggest fight so far. Its a title fight so we have trained and prepared accordingly.

UCA – Are you doing any unique training during this camp? Swimming, CrossFit, Yoga
KK – For this camp we have done lots of mittwork, sparring, strength and conditioning, road work(running) jump rope, etc. It has very much been an old school boxing regimen with some high intensity interval training to get myself into elite condition.

UCA – Are you preparing for a tough grinding fight?
KK – I’m ready for whatever gets thrown my way in this fight. I’m prepared for whatever my opponent comes with.

UCA – Do you have plenty of sparring partners at your gym or do you have to travel to other gyms for sparring?
KK – We traveled a bit for sparring on some days but kept most of our sparring “in-house” at UFC Gym Aliso Viejo. We have a good group of guys that have helped us prepare.

UCA – On paper this is a 50-50 fight. If you feel the fight is close going into the 3rd round will you come out hard and push the pace to win the round?
KK – My coach and I are always training for and pushing for the knockout. That is our style. we are going to attack for every second of every round so yes, we are prepared to go after it in there.

UCA – Do you feel the fight will be a back and forth battle where you are both tested?
KK – I never want to overlook my opponent and I expect him to be at his best on fight night.

UCA – There is a famous quote in boxing.. Don’t leave it in the hands of the judges. What does that mean to you?
KK – Control your own destiny. Go for the KO. You never want to let someone else decide your fate for you.

UCA – How do you imagine this fight going?
KK – I expect to get the finish in the 2nd or 3rd round but we are prepare to go all three rounds if need be. Should be an exciting fight, as always.

The 911 Fight Night Boxing Event takes place Saturday August 18, 2018 at the Shaun Diamond Plaza in Pomona CA and will be headlined by #1 ranked Dusty Rodriguez, Santa Monica Fire Dept vs the UCA Welterweight Champion Mike Delery Los Angeles Police Dept who will be moving up a weight class in hopes of capturing the vacant UCA Jr Middleweight crown.  Aside from both fighters being extremely talented and having superior boxing skills they have something else in common, they have both been in the ring with the former Interim UCA Jr Middleweight Champion 2nd ranked Chris Martinez, Fresno Police Dept.  Taking into account the styles of Rodriguez and Delery this fight promises to be a memorable slugfest. Who better to ask to break down the fight than the man himself, Chris Martinez. 

Ring Generalship: I think Rodriguez is a solid boxer. He has a strong foundation and knows his way around the ring. Delery is another solid fighter but has less ring experience. I think Rodriguez can control the pace of the fight but Delery will have to bring the pressure in order to pull off the win. Both fighters have displayed good timing and patience in past fights, but no one wants to see that, everyone wants to see them bang it out.  

Mental/Focus: Rodriguez is a strong fighter mentally and physically. Rodriguez works hard to prepare for his fights and is focused while under pressure in the ring. Rodriguez is a patient fighter, which makes him dangerous. Delery also works hard to prepare for his matches. Delery is an athlete who is in great shape. I think Delery is going to have to make Rodriguez respect him by landing something hard in the first round and keeping Rodriguez busy and moving. Delery has to stay focused and not allow Rodriguez to control the pace of the fight. Prior mental preparation is key for both fighters. Who will be the one to work harder to prepare for this fight? Who will have the stamina to constantly bring pressure during the entire fight?  Who will stand firm during the storm and counter with explosiveness? Who’s going to have the heart to push beyond their limitations to bring home the title?

Speed: Delery has decent speed and good footwork. I think Delery is going to have to throw more than Rodriguez and keep moving, while fighting from the outside, throwing different combinations. I believe Delery has the reach and the ability to fight Rodriguez on the outside. Rodriguez has decent speed but more importantly he throws from different angles. I think Rodriguez can play two parts in this fight. Rodriguez can bring the pressure, cut the ring off and smother Delery or he can be patient, time it right and explode on Delery.

Power: You never know a fighter’s power until you stand on the receiving end of a punch. Rodriguez has explosive power that comes out when least expected. Unfortunately, I did not go the distance with Delery to feel his power. Delery put me down with a well-placed punch to the kidney. I felt some of Delery’s other punches, but I didn’t get into a good exchange with him to feel him bring it, so I can’t give a good review on Delery’s power. Rodriguez has a stiff jab and a solid right. His basic punches are solid, which sets up his hooks and upper cuts. I honestly don’t think Delery can fight Rodriguez on the inside.

Footwork: Rodriguez has good footwork and has a solid foundation. You hardly every see him stumble over his own feet or lose balance. This discipline works to his benefit. Rodriguez closes the distance well and is a well balanced fighter. Delery has decent footwork. He has a solid foundation, but I think he is going to have to move and outwork Rodriguez to win this fight. Rodriguez will have to stalk Delery, bring the pressure and make the fight uncomfortable for him.   

Defense: Delery does a good job at keeping his hands up to defend himself. Rodriguez does the same but he also knows how to counter after being touched. Both fighters have great defense, but this can be a boring fight if they decide to both wait.

Toughness: Both guys are tough, respectable fighters. I think this will be a good test for both of them. I think whoever wants it more will be the tougher fighter during the fight.

Cardio: Rodriguez is in great shape. I’ve seen Rodriguez give it his all, during all three rounds. I’ve seen Delery come out throwing a lot of punches during the first two rounds, but he slows down during the third round. I know Delery is not taking Rodriguez lightly, so I’m sure he will be prepared to give it his all.

Prediction: I think Delery is going to have to stay busy, throwing lots of punches and keep Rodriguez thinking. Delery has to be in top shape to fight this way. Rodriguez also has to train hard and stay disciplined. I think Rodriguez will have to cut the ring off, bring pressure, and let his hands go. This is a fight I will be at. Either way it goes, I respect both fighters, they have to expect the unexpected and don’t take each other lightly.

Starting today the new Jr Heavyweight division will be added to the line up. Currently the Super Cruiserweight division is 190.1 lbs – 205 lbs and the Heavyweight division is 205.1 lbs – 220 lbs. Leaving a 14.9 pound gap between the weight classes. The Jr Heavyweight division will shrink the weight gap to 11 lbs and 8 lbs. The Super Cruiserweight division weight limit will now be 201 lbs and the Jr Heavyweight limit will be 212 lbs and the Heavyweight division will remain the same at 220 lbs. Who will be the first UCA Jr Heavyweight Champion?

The undefeated UCA Middleweight Champion Travis Clark, Stockton Police Department has voluntarily relinquished his title. Clark moved to Louisiana for a job promotion and doesn’t know when he will be available to fight again. He hasn’t defended his belt since October 2016 and doesn’t want to hold up the belt any longer. 

The Battle of the Badges served up another exciting night of boxing Saturday night at the McClellan Conference Center in Sacramento, CA. The lineup featured some compelling fights including a UCA title fight between Charde Stevens, Fresno Sheriff’s Dept. vs April Martinez, CDCR, CHCF. Here are the results from the night.

The show kicked off with a pair of Middleweights. 5th ranked Sterling Ingram, U.S. Navy vs. Gerardo Garcia, CDCR-DVI. Ingram has his eye on the UCA Middleweight title and was looking to separate himself from the pack. Garcia was making his ring debut and looking to make a name for himself. When these warriors came out of their corners there was a short feeling out period before they were trading leather. Garcia was holding his ground against the 5th ranked Ingram and edged out the first round. Ingram picked up the pace and started landing some clean shots in the 2nd. One round a piece going into the 3rd. Ingram found his rhythm in the third. He was using good footwork, landing clean punches, moving in and out, staying out of range and making Garcia miss. Ingram winner by decision.

The Masters UCA #1 ranked Light Heavyweight Izzy Montes, CDCR, CSP Sacramento returned to the ring looking to stay busy after his disappointing loss to Mike Hagen, CHP in April for the Masters UCA Light Heavyweight Title. Montes squared off with civilian fighter Mike McIntyre who trains out of Urijah Faber’s Ultimate Fitness Gym. Montes did not do enough against Hagen and did not want to make the same mistake against McIntyre. When the bell rang Montes stayed busy throwing punches in bunches keeping McIntyre on defense.  McIntyre had a good jab and would land when he threw it. Montes outworked McIntyre for 3 rounds picking up the win by unanimous decision. Montes wants another crack at the Champion Hagen.

Super Heavyweights Matt Eleopoulos – Solano County DA’s Office vs. Craig Hamblin – CDCR-Solano State Prison. The big question surrounding this fight is, Will Hamblin’s “O” go? Hamblin stepped into the ring in hopes of getting his first win against the Masters 8th ranked Super Heavyweight Eleopoulos who will end a 12 month layoff. Hamblin hasn’t stopped fighting since he first stepped into the ring 7 years ago. Unfortunately, he has been on the losing end of every fight and carries a record of 0-7.  For Hamblin to lose seven times and continue to train and fight is a true testament of his persistence to not give up until he wins. When the bell sounded to start this highly anticipated fight both fighters came forward looking to establish their dominance. From bell to bell these guys were throwing and landing punches with bad intentions. When the final bell ended there was no clear winner. Tough fight to score. Did Hamblin do enough to pick up his first win? When the decision was announced it was Hamblin who would finally have his hand raised. Persistence pays off, congratulations to Craig Hamblin.

UCA #6 Cruiserweight Anthony Martinez – Madera Police Dept. vs. Aaron Benoit – CDCR-CHCF featured a high skill level match up. 30 seconds into the first round we all knew we were in for a great fight. Martinez is 1-0 and Benoit was making his ring debut but they looked like they each had 10 fights. They showed great balance, technique and composure. These guys may have met too early in their career. If these guys ever meet again it will be for the title. Beautiful jabs, right hands and body work were traded throughout the fight. Half way through the 3rd round both fighters stood in the middle of the ring and showed their warrior spirit and went at it throwing everything they had at each other.  When the final bell ended it was Benoit who would walk away with the win. What a fight! That is how you make an impact in your first fight, Aaron Benoit welcome to the UCA! 

In what was considered the “UCA Fight of the Night” Heavyweights Robert Mantilla – CDCR-CHCF and Rusty Snyder – CDCR-Folsom Prison slugged it out for three rounds. These guys completely emptied themselves in a full on dogfight to prove who was the better fighter.  Both fighters refused to back down. This was a tremendous fight with both fighters giving everything they had of themselves. When the dust settled both fighters came to the center of the ring to hear the judge’s decision. When the score cards were added up it was Folsom Prison’s Rusty Snyder who would have his hand raised.  Rumors are Rusty Snyder may hang em up for good. I hope the rumors aren’t true, Snyder is too gifted of an athlete to not keep fighting

Jr Middleweights Jekora Robinson – CDCR-CHCF vs. Jessica Gamez – CDCR-Mule Creek State Prison When the bell rang these ladies didn’t waste any time getting to know each other. They came out swinging. Jekora was the stronger puncher and seemed to land more punches in the exchanges. Gamez held her ground absorbed the punches and answered back with her own. When the final bell ended is was Robinson who would be announced the winner.

Anthony Cross, CDCR, CSP Sacramento finally gets his chance to shine. Cross was set to fight UCA #3 Brent Pavey, Federal Bureau of Prisons at the Central California Battle of the Badges in April but was forced to pull out of the fight. The fight was rescheduled for the NorCal Battle of the Badges.  Unfortunately, Pavey was forced to pull out of that fight also. Cross was again left without an opponent. When Cross found out Pavey backed out again he said, “Get me a fight and I want a tough fight” Heartbeat Boxing (Fresno) coach Gilbert Ruiz said “I have a tough fighter who is ready to go.” Anthony Cross vs Carlos Cuadra was made.  When the bell rang to start this fight Cross was more than ready. He came forward pressing the action throwing heavy leather. Cuadra couldn’t keep Cross off him, he had to fight every second just to survive. “Pressure bursts pipes” and from bell to bell Cross continued to pressure and walk Cuadra down not giving him a chance to breathe. When the final bell sounded and the announcement was made it was Cross who would pick up the victory and extend his perfect record to 3-0. We may be looking at the next UCA Cruiserweight Champion?

Rashaan Jones – Solano County DA’s Office vs. Jay Devlin – U.S. Army. When the bell rang to start this Light heavyweight battle Jones came out of the blue corner looking to take control of the fight.  He wasn’t throwing with power but in volume. Jones overwhelmed Devlin never giving him a chance to rest. Ultimately, forcing Devlin to stay on the stool and not come out for the third round. Jones winner 2nd rd. TKO.

Super Middleweights Daniel Pacheco – American Ambulance vs. Andy Pholkham – U.S. Marines. Pacheco and Pholkham met in the center of the ring with the intention of making a statement that neither one is backing down. This brutal 3 round war showcased both fighters grit and toughness. Pholkham seemed to get the best of Pacheco in the exchanges and landed the cleaner punches. Pholkham winner by decision.

Welterweights Frank Quitugua – CDCR-CSP-CMF vs. Aaron Padilla – CDCR-San Quentin State Prison. This fight had a lot of drama surrounding it before the fighters entered the ring. Quitugua and Padilla use to train at the same gym before their trainers parted ways. Quitugua went with his trainer to Audacious Muay Thai in Vacaville and Padilla stayed at 8 Drums Martial Arts in Stockton. When the bell sounded Frank had a game plan and never deviated from it. He never sat in front of Padilla, he used good footwork, moved in and out and picked his spots to throw.  Padilla didn’t have an answer.  In the 3rd round Padilla changed the rhythm of the fight he came forward throwing punches and backing Quitugua to the ropes but it was too late. Quitugua winner by decision.

Jr Cruiserweights Troy Bennett – Consumnes Fire Dept. vs. Dragon Tran – CDCR-CSP-Sacramento. As soon as the fight started Bennett came out with a fast pace throwing punches in bunches. Dragon showed a big heart and landed a few punches of his own but Bennett was too much. He was overwhelming Dragon with punches and pressure forcing his corner to throw in the towel halfway through the second round. Bennett winner 2nd rd. TKO

Light Heavyweights Marcus Barrow – CDCR-Salinas Valley State Prison vs. Devin Desjarlais – Linda Fire Dept. Barrow is coming off a first round TKO win and was looking to add another mark in the win column. This was Desjarlais first fight and when the bell sounded Desjarlias looked like a veteran. Devin is a high school and college athlete, his athletic ability may be the reason he looked so good in his first fight.  Desjarlais is fundamentally sound with a good defense, good footwork and ring smarts. He doesn’t seem to have any weaknesses but it will take better opposition to really get a read on Devin’s ability. Barrow put up a hell of an effort and had his moments but couldn’t quite match Devin’s offense. Desjarlais winner by decision.

Heavyweights Donavon Lewis – Fresno Police Dept. vs. Shay McIntyre – CDCR-Folsom Prison This was a test for both fighters. For Shay it was a huge opportunity, beat Lewis and gain a significant win over a marque opponent and get back on track for another shot at the title. Lewis was facing a bigger opponent with more experience. When the bell sounded Lewis came out looking to take control of the fight early. Lewis fights with a lot of confidence.  He gets his confidence and mental toughness from his stablemates where he has to hold his own out of necessity more than by choice. Lewis spars and trains with guys like Evan Solorio, Joe Lopez, Chris Honeycutt, Ed Ruth and big brother Chris Lewis. His training transitions into the ring. He’s patient, moves around well, has good speed, and can punch. McIntyre was effective when he came forward and threw punches but he just didn’t do it enough. Lewis’s power shots, hand speed, and higher connect percentage were the difference in the fight. Lewis winner by decision.  Lewis extends his winning streak to 3-0 and gets one step closer to challenging the UCA Heavyweight Champ Marqus Blevins.

The night’s main attraction was for the UCA Super Welterweight Championship Title.  Charde Stevens – Fresno Sheriff’s Dept. vs. April Martinez – CDCR–CHCF. When two women step into the ring and put on a great performance it gives other women a sense of empowerment and the confidence to one day step in the ring and fight. Stevens and Martinez put on a great performance. This was a great style matchup. Stevens has the height and reach advantage and must keep her distance and keep Martinez at the end of her punches. Martinez the shorter power puncher must cut the ring off, get inside and work the body and head. When the bell sounded Stevens stayed on her bicycle moving around the ring sticking the jab and occasional right hand in Martinez face. Martinez came out in the 2nd round determined to close the distance and attack Stevens body. Martinez did a good job of cutting the ring off and trapping Stevens against the ropes and going to the body. One round a piece going into the 3rd. Who wants it? The 3rd round was a back and forth battle that delivered excitement and swings of momentum until the final bell. Both fighters had their moments. This one is going to the score cards. Regardless of the outcome it was a star making performance that put the super welterweight division on notice. What these lady warriors delivered was special. This fight was filled with unrelenting action from bell to bell that, other than the mandatory one-minute rest period between rounds, it felt like one extended round as they exchanged punches nonstop for virtually the entire fight. When the score cards were added up we had a winner. And the new….UCA Super Welterweight Champion April Martinez, CDCR, California Health Care Facility.

The countdown is officially here! We are less than a month away from an action packed night with fighters descending on the McClellan Conference Center from all over California. Public Safety’s most valiant warriors are logging the miles on the road and preparing themselves for a chance at the UCA titans. This card features some very intriguing match-ups and the debut of some fighters who have shown the championship mettle that is required to win the coveted UCA title. These are the types events that are guaranteed to birth the next big thing in the United Combat Association. This is where champions are made. April Martinez, CDCR, CHCF who trains under professional fighter Yaqui Lopez at Fat City Boxing Gym in Stockton will take on Charde Stevens, Fresno Sheriffs Dept who trains under the guidance of Gilbert Ruiz at Heartbeat Boxing Gym in Fresno. 6 UCA top ranked fighters will also be on the card. 6th ranked Aaron Padilla, CDCR, San Quentin Prison will face Frank Quitugua, CDCR, CMF. 8th ranked Masters Matt Eleopoulos, District Attorneys Office will challenge Craig Hamblin. 5th ranked Sterling Ingram, U.S. Navy will square off with undefeated Gerardo Garcia, CDCR, DVI. 6th ranked Anthony Martinez, Madera PD will lock horns with Aaron Benoit, CDCR, CHCF. 10th Ranked Shay McIntyre, Folsom Prison will battle it out with 2nd ranked Donavon Lewis, Fresno PD. The UCA Welterweight Champion Asiah Medawar, San Bernardino Sheriffs Dept successfully defended her title last night at the SoCal Battle of the Badges. For 8 weeks Medawar was preparing to take on Faasamoa Palmer, Camp Pendleton Paramedic. At the weigh in, Palmer came in 40 pounds over the Welterweight limit. With less than 2 hours, 3rd ranked Denise Guerrero San Bernardino Police Dept stepped up for a shot at the title. Just like that it was on! Medawar vs Guerrero for the UCA Welterweight Championship title. When the bell rang to start the fight, Medawar jumped on Guerrero throwing punches in bunches. Guerrero never had a chance to get started and the referee stepped in half way through the 1st round and stopped the fight. And still…. The UCA Welterweight Champion Asiah Medawar.

The main event featured 2 of the baddest big men in the game. The Champion Chris Dubiansky Camp Pendleton Fire Dept vs the #1 ranked title challenger Justin Robinson Camp Pendleton Fire Dept for the UCA Super Heavyweight Championship. Dubiansky is coming off two TKO victories and was looking for number three. And he accomplished it. Dubiansky stopped Robinson in the 3rd round. And Still….The UCA Super Heavyweight Champion.

#1 ranked Katherine Proudfoot, 29 Palms Fire Dept. was defeated by Faasamoa Palmer, Camp Pendleton Paramedic.

6th ranked Jasper Sandoval CDCR, Chino State Prison picked up another win defeating Eulices Recinos, U.S. Border Patrol to take over the #2 spot in the Middleweight ranking ladder.

Sterling Parks, U.S Navy defeated 4th ranked Cody Anderson Murrieta Fire Dept. to get on the radar in the Super Middleweight rankings.

3rd ranked Masters Light Heavyweight Demetrius Brown, CDCR Ironwood State Prison defeated Tim Nakumura, Imperial County Sheriffs Dept. to remain undefeated.

On Saturday, May 19th, the SoCal Battle of the Badges returns to Agua Caliente Resort and Casino for a night of championship boxing. The event will feature a UCA Championship Double Header. Three weeks after making his ring debut the UCA, 2nd ranked Heavyweight Donavon Lewis, Fresno PD returned to the ring. Lewis competed on Aleman’s Boxing Spring Show, Saturday in Fresno CA. and defeated Michael Luna (2-3) from Southeast Fresno Boxing Club by unanimous decision. Lewis is scheduled to fight again next month in Tulare. Lewis’ trainer Bryan Williams hailed him as the most talented fighter he’s ever worked with. Lewis is definitely one to watch in 2018. His team has him on a fast track to find out sooner, rather than later, if he has what it takes. Lewis has his sights set on challenging the undefeated UCA 2 division Champion Marqus Blevins, Kings County Probation next April at the Central California Battle of the Badges. Stay tuned…

The sweet science returned to the Hanford Civic Auditorium for the 5th annual Central California Battle of the Badges. This night was determined to change careers, create legacies, crown champions and change the landscape of the UCA. The fans are ready and the fighters are ready. Its fight time and the energy is real! Let’s get ready to rumble!

Bout 1. The night started off with two fighters making their ring debut. UCA Super Middleweights Sterling Ingram (Navy) vs Daniel Pacheco (American Ambulance.) Pacheco came out with a lightning strike that Ingram managed to dodge, and the Navy fighter took over from there. Ingram was aggressively taunting Pacheco, who could not keep up with his energy. At one point Pacheco missed a punch and his momentum carried him into the ropes. Ingram delivered several quick hooks, setting the crowd abuzz. Pacheco, tried to take a defensive stance, countering when he could, but Ingram was too much for him. Off balance and out of his element in round three, the referee stopped the fight and gave the victory to Ingram.

Bout 2. UCA Light Heavyweights Anthony Walker (Reedley PD) vs Robert Brink (CHP) The 1st round was defined by quick punches and even quicker footwork from both fighters. Both missed several one-two combos until finally Walker connected with Brink’s jaw, knocking him backward and over in a loss of balance.  Walker then took the center ground while Brink circled him. The two settled into a rhythm, mostly punching at the same time. The fight had to be stopped multiple times for Brink’s bleeding nose. Both fighters favored the left jab, but neither gained much momentum until Brink landed a series of 6 punches to finish the 2nd round. In the 3rd round, both fighters picked up the aggression. Brink’s face was covered in blood, but that did not stop him from at one point landing 4 punches on Walker in a row. Although both fought valiantly, Brink’s nose would not stop bleeding forcing the referee to stop the fight in the 3rd round. Walker winner by TKO.

Bout 3. The #1 ranked Welterweight David Bermudez, East Bay Regional Parks PD vs #1 ranked Jr Middleweight Dusty Rodriguez, Santa Monica Fire Dept. Rodriguez came in over the contracted 154 pound limit by 1.5 pounds. He would not be eligible to win the title if he won. Bermudez weighed in at 153 pounds and would claim the title if he won. Bermudez came out early to set the tone, missing on what would have been a devastating haymaker to the face. Both fighters showed a high ability to dodge. Bermudez continued to throw incredibly swift punches but was unable to connect. Not taking any chances, Rodriguez kept a tight defense and waited for an opening hitting Bermudez with a wrecking ball of a punch, causing David to hit the canvas. Bermudez would beat the 8 count and Rodriguez would throw a 4 punch combination forcing the referee to stop the fight in the first round.

Bout 4. UCA Super Cruiserweights Anthony Martinez (Madera PD) vs Dario Salazar (Sanger PD) This was the first fight for both parties. Salazar came out as the aggressor, but both managed to deliver powerful jabs early on. Salazar, in particular, landed a few strong jabs and uppercuts to the body with his right hand. Both fighters came out in round 2 looking to land heavy blows, but they were dodged. Although Salazar showed off agile feet in the rounds, the momentum of the fight shifted when Martinez landed two devastating uppercuts to the jaw during a tangle, as well as two ferocious right crosses to the head at the end of round 2. Round 3 showed both fighters obviously fatigued, and few punches were landed. Most of this round consisted of holding, tie-ups, and clinching. Martinez, however, was able to get several hooks to the body in, securing his victory.

Bout 5.  Masters UCA Light Heavyweight Championship #1 Michael Hagen (CHP) vs #2 Izzy Montes (CDCR, CSP) Hagen (54 years old) and Montes (52) did not show their age during the fight, both exhibiting spry side-stepping footwork early on in round one. Hagen was constantly in a bob and weave mentality while Montes took an upright stance and looked for an opening. They both took turns evenly exchanging jabs to the face in round 1. Montes came out even more defensive in round 2, perhaps too defensive as Hagen was able to force him into a corner and score several points on him. Despite this, most of the second round punches were blocked or dodged by the two fighters. Montes picked up a little speed at the end of round 2 and carried it to the 3rd as both fighters came out in an absolute frenzy. Montes tried to make up lost points in the round but ended up tiring himself out. In the end, Mike Hagen would take home the belt and become the new…. Masters UCA Light Heavyweight Champion.

Bout 6. Heavyweights Rishard Hayes (Tribal Public Safety) vs Joshua McConnell (CHP) The first round started quickly for a heavyweight fight, but gradually slowed in pace as it continued. Each fighter took turns pushing the other into the corner and pummeling them until they were able to break free. McConnell did a good job dodging against Hayes’s constant right hook. By round 2, McConnell had slowed down and failed to dodge back to back right hooks by Hayes. Clearly unsettled, McConnell tried to bounce back with wild haymakers, but Rishard was able to block them. Rishard ended the round landing several punches. McConnell showed his fatigue in round 3 when a missed punch carried his momentum into the ropes, for which Hayes punished him. In the end, Hayes got McConnell into the corner one last time to land a series of punches, securing the victory.

Bout 7. UCA JR Cruiserweight Title Fight #2 Gerardo Serrano (Reedley PD) vs #1 Gabriel Flores (LAPD) This fight started all offense, both fighters landing relentless blows. Flores fought quick with a lot of punches while Serrano was looking to make is punches count for the later rounds.  Combined the two fighters landed more punches in the 1st than any other round of the night. Both showed a lack of energy in round 2, but not a lack of effort. The 2nd round was similar to the first, punch after punch being landed. Eventually, Serrano got Flores in a corner and pummeled him for upwards of 10 seconds before the fight was stopped due to a Flores dislocated shoulder. Winner by TKO and the new…UCA Jr Cruiserweight Champion Gerardo Serrano.

Bout 8. UCA Heavyweights Noel Montes (Folsom State Prison) vs Victor Ibal (Sanger PD) Montes and Ibal showed a patient fighting style to start. Montes used his height advantage to get a series of three punches in early. Clinches were used prominently early in the fight. Ibal would often separate from these holds and land an overhand right or uppercut. Montes managed to get a good head strike in right before the bell. Both fighters came out more aggressive in round 2, and the fight maintained even matched throughout it. Each fighter showed he was adept at dodging. In round 3, Montes managed to gain a series of points before Ibal tied him up. To end the round, both fighters took turns landing unguarded punches on the other. Montes was declared winner by decision.

Bout 9. UCA Heavyweights Donavon Lewis (Fresno PD) vs AJ Abalos (CDCR Pleasant Valley State Prison) Lewis, possibly the most physically imposing fighter of the night, showed off a devastatingly quick and powerful right hook to start the fight, but Abalos held his own. After one dodge, however, Abalos could not complete a second, and was hit two times in succession. He lost his balance, falling into the ropes, never gaining momentum back from there. Abalos was more successful in a slower round 2, but still came up short against Lewis. In round 3, Lewis came out with a bloodthirsty for victory and completely overwhelmed Abalos and sealing his victory.

Bout 10. UCA Super Cruiserweight Title Fight Marqus Blevins (Kings County Probation) vs Josh Webb (CHP) Both fighters showed adept footwork and dodging ability as they felt each other out in an even first round. In the second round, the two came to fight. Each of them sold out on several punches, allowing the other fighter to counter. Clinching was used heavily in the 2nd round. Blevins appeared to be the quicker fighter and took the lead by the start of round 3. Blevins, who was fighting for the right to hold two title belts, came out determined to not let Webb gain momentum. In the end, Blevins was able to hold his ground and earn himself the title. And the new…UCA Super Cruiserweight Champion Marqus Blevins.

Bout 11. UCA JR Cruiserweights #3 Roman Grider (CDCR) vs Juan Valle (Sanger PD) Grider came out landing a heavy haymaker, but Valle was quick to show the crowd this would not be an easy fight. He immediately countered by chasing Grider around the ring, landing a series of punches at each meeting until finally Grider tied him up. During the first round, Valle got Grider into the corner 3 times to beat him down. He did this 4 times in the 2nd round, but each time Grider fought back with a vengeance, landing hard punches of his own while defending. The commentator rightfully deemed the fight a video game based on the sheer number of punches each fighter was landing. By the 3rd round, the fight had worked the crowd into a frenzy. Both fought valiantly, but Valle’s strategy to push Valle into a corner won out in the end, making him victorious in what would be deemed the “Fight of the Night”.

Bout 12. UCA JR Welterweights #2 BJ Adkins (WV Raleigh SD) vs #3 Jose Bustillo’s (NAVY) Adkins came all the way from West Virginia and did not waste much time, landing several hooks to the body in the opening seconds. Bustillo’s took a defensive stance, covering his face, allowing Adkins to continually hit his ribs with right hooks. For every block Bustillo’s secured, Adkins seemed to land 2 more punches. Adkins remained in control the duration of the fight. Both exchanged an even number of jabs in the 3rd round, giving the victory to Adkins.

What a night of fights. The night produced the crowning of the first Jr Cruiserweight Champion Gerardo Serrano, Reedley Police Dept. History was made when Marqus Blevins, Kings County Probation became the first UCA fighter to hold two titles at the same time. Blevins is now the undefeated UCA Super Cruiserweight and UCA Heavyweight Champion.

The first Masters UCA Light Heavyweight Champion was crowned 54 years young Mike Hagen, CHP. The Golden Fists award was given to Donavon Lewis, Fresno Police Dept. and Sterling Ingram, Navy.  The Gladiator award was given to Robert Brink, CHP and Gabriel Flores, LAPD for their toughness and iron will. Fight of the Night honors were given to Roman Grider, CDCR, Corcoran SATF and Juan Valle, Sanger Police Dept. for their grit and determination throughout the course of the fight. Both fighters gave everything they had of themselves and refused to back down.

The much anticipated Central California Battle of the Badges is now official. All 24 fighters have weighed in and been cleared by the doctor to fight. The Red Corner vs Blue Corner goes down tomorrow night at the Hanford Civic Auditorium. Doors open at 5 first punch thrown at 7. There is nothing more to say. 

The Central California Battle of the Badges official weigh in will take place at the Hanford Civic Auditorium Friday at 5pm. The fighters will weigh in, face off for photos, take team photos and interviews. Tickets and merchandise will be on sale at the weigh in. Just days before DJ Vargas, Hanford Police Department and Jorge Caamal, Los Angeles Sheriffs Department were set to clash in a highly anticipated UCA Light Heavyweight Championship Title fight Vargas suffered an injury. “I sustained an injury in sparring about two weeks ago” Vargas said. “As you know and understand, I do not get paid to compete, and my health, family, and career takes priority over a charity event. Unfortunately I will not be able to compete at this time and do not have an expected timeline to return.”

The former #1 ranked title challenger 3X Police Olympic Gold Medalist Jorge Caamal, LASD hasn’t fought since losing a controversial decision to Louisiana Firefighter Rodney Moore. Caamal will make his return to the ring at the Central California Battle of the Badges Saturday April 7, 2018. Caamal is a battle tested warrior who has stepped through the ropes many times. With over 30 fights and nearly 3 years off Caamal will step into the ring with DJ Vargas, Hanford PD who is considered the best in the division. No tune up fight needed. “I want to fight the best”” Caamal said. “That’s what boxing is about” Caamal has fought the best in the game names like Brent Bugarin, David Bermudez, Ivan Guillermo and on Saturday he will add Vargas to that list. A thrilling Heavyweight showdown has been added to the stacked Central California Battle of the Badges card. Victor Ibal, (7-4) Sanger Police Department vs Noel Montes, (7-1) CDCR, Folsom State Prison is an interesting matchup that can be compared to Luis Ortiz vs Deontay Wilder on the amateur level. Ibal has the weight and experience advantage along with one punch knockout power. If Montes makes a mistake it could be lights out. Montes has the height, speed and reach advantage and seems to be a natural in the ring. If Montes uses his footwork and keeps his distance it could be an easy night for him. Dario Salazar, Sanger Police Dept vs Anthony Martinez, Madera Police Dept features a battle of up and comers. Both fighters will be making their ring debut and guarantee to make a good first impression. Salazar will represent Sanger Boxing Gym under coach James Ward who knows what it takes to get a fighter ready for battle having trained fighters from the ground up. Martinez trains under the watchful eye of the undefeated reigning and defending UCA Jr Welterweight Champion Shant Sheklanian, CDCR, State Parole. Come fight time Martinez will be fundamentally sound and razor sharp. This fight may start off slow but once the first punch is landed the leather is gonna fly. Tickets for this event are going fast. Every fighter knows the proverbial clock is ticking. The time will inevitably come when they will have to hang em up and walk away from the ring. It is a difficult decision to make and it is not uncommon for a fighter to return to the squared circle for “Just one more fight.” But when the bright lights fade and the time has arrived, each fighter has to come to terms with what lies ahead without the next fight to plan and prepare for. Many fighters find solace and fulfillment in taking fighters under their wing and changing their hats from fighter to trainer. It is a great responsibility and can be just as demanding as preparing for a fight as a pugilist. The rewards are great and the trainer is a very large part of a fighters success. They share everything with the fighter and a piece of them are in that ring when the bell sounds. Some of boxing’s best trainers were once themselves top fighters. Trainers like Robert Garcia, Buddy McGirt and Mark Breland just to name a few.

Some of the UCA’s past elite fighters and champions have made the transition into training fighters as well. They have moved into the role that requires patience, love and discipline. It is a natural progression that fighters face. Some have the innate ability to teach and to mentor others in one of the most unforgiving sports on the planet. Trainers like Bryan Williams, Armando Guzman, Mike Young and Jorge Gonzalez have proved that they have what it takes to create champions. Here’s to all the trainers that have poured themselves into their fighters and know the great devotion required to take on this role. Josh Webb, Robert Brink and Mike Hagen will be competing on the April 7th card and were pushed by their stablemates in a round robin with no rest for 5 rounds. Let the countdown begin for the Central California Battle of the Badges!

DJ Vargas, Hanford Police Dept vs Jorge Caamal, Los Angeles Sheriffs Dept is on. This matchup may prove to be more exciting than Mendoza vs Vargas due to their styles. Vargas is a master craftsman with perhaps the best footwork in the game. Caamal is a throwback fighter Jake LaMotta type coming forward pressing the action willing to take 3 to land one. They will be fighting for the interim UCA Light Heavyweight Championship Title April 7, 2018 at the Hanford Civic Auditorium. Let’s do this!

Mendoza, LAPD vs DJ Vargas, Hanford PD is canceled. Mendoza was forced to pull out of the fight due to work obligations. However with less than 24 hours a new opponent was found. The former #1 ranked title challenger Jorge Caamal, LASD accepted to take Mendoza’s place and challenge Vargas for the interim UCA Light Heavyweight title. Team Vargas is discussing the change in opponent and will make a decision tonight. Team Vargas will have 30 days to come up with a different game plan for the new opponent. Caamal is a right handed pressure fighter with pop compared to a southpaw with speed and good footwork. Boxer vs Puncher.

The undefeated UCA Heavyweight Champion Marqus Blevins, Kings County Probation will attempt to capture his 2nd UCA title when he squares off with #1 ranked Josh Webb, California Highway Patrol for the UCA Super Cruiserweight Title. Blevins and Webb met last year to figure out who was the best at 220 pounds. In a fight of the year performance Blevins would walk away with the UCA Heavyweight crown. On April 7, 2018 they will meet again but this time it will be for the UCA Super Cruiserweight title. Will Blevins be the first fighter to hold two titles at the same time? 

Joshua McConnell, CHP vs Ruben Gamboa, Fire Protection Agency is turning into an intriguing heavyweight matchup. Gamboa is focused more on winning the UCA Super Heavyweight title than McConnell. Gamboa is scheduled to fight #2 Albert Deleon, CDCR, Ironwood State Prison at the SoCal Battle of the Badges May 19th. Then he wants the winner of the UCA Championship fight between the Champion Chris Dubiansky, Camp Pendleton FD and #1 ranked Justin Robinson. Gamboa says he is the best Super Heavyweight in the division and predicts he will beat McConnell, DeLeon and Dubiansky. La Habra Boxing Club and coach Bryan Arreola hosted a private workout for #1 ranked Gabriel Flores. On April 7, 2018  Flores, LAPD will meet 2nd ranked ranked Gerardo Serrano, Reedley Police Dept for the vacant UCA Jr Cruiserweight Championship. Flores and Serrano are ready to put the Jr Cruiserweights on the map by becoming the first champion in the division. Flores looked sharp holding their own against some talented amateur and professional fighters. Flores is in tremendous shape and can’t wait til fight night. Don’t miss it!

The UCA Super Middleweight title challenger #1 ranked Remin Pineda, Los Angeles Sheriffs Department stopped his training this afternoon to discuss his upcoming UCA title fight against the former champion Mike Valle, CDCR, Pleasant Valley State Prison. Pineda opened up about strategy, what the fans can expect, and finding a balance between work, training and family. Pineda knows what it takes to win a decision in Valle’s backyard and is confident he can pull it off.

Sterling Ingram, U.S. Navy will square off against Daniel Pacheco, American Ambulance (Paramedic) in a Super Middleweight duel at the Central California Battle of the Badges Saturday April 7, 2018. Both fighters come from good camps and will be ready for battle when they enter the ring for the first time. Ingram trains at Valley Fight Club in Hanford and Pacheco trains at Heartbeat Boxing in Fresno. Sterling will enter the ring with the speed advantage and Pacheco will enter with the power advantage. One of the exciting bouts on the card features a Jr Cruiserweight showdown between Robert Brink, CHP vs Anthony Walker, Reedley Police Dept.
