Women’s boxing will be introduced as a sport at the Summer Olympics in London this year, and the United States will have at least one representative.

Marlen Esparza, 22, became the first American female boxer to qualify for the summer games this week, according to the New York Times.

Esparza, who is from Houston, defeated Luu Thi Duyen of Vietnam on Tuesday to earn her Olympic berth, the Times reports.

Two other female boxers from the U.S. – Quanitta Underwood, 28, and Claressa Shields, 17 – were eliminated from the qualifying tournament, the Women’s World Boxing Championships, which are being held in China this week. However, they may still be eligible for a spot in the Summer Olympics, based on the decision of an international commission in the upcoming weeks, according to the Times.

Women’s boxing will feature three weight divisions in the Olympics: featherweight (112 pounds), lightweight (132 pounds) and middleweight (165 pounds), as opposed to the 10 divisions in men’s boxing. Esparza will compete in the featherweight category.

Over 700 fight fans showed up to watch Law Enforcement, Firefighters, and Military fighters battle it out for charity at the Alameda Battle of the Badges Saturday night. A mix of Boxing, MMA and Kickboxing made up the 11 bout fight card.  The proceeds from the event supported the California Narcotics Officers Memorial Fund, SMF, NEFA and the California Narcotic Officers Association Reg. 1.

The night started off with two fighters who were anxious to get it on. As soon as the bell rang Omar Salem, Napa P.D. and David Lloyd, Alameda P.D. (195lbs) went at it. Salem came out like a sharp shooter with his one-two punch combo. Lloyd fought tough but did not have an answer to avoid Salem’s punches. Lloyd suffered two knockdowns before the referee stepped in to stop the fight. Salem, winner 1st rd TKO.

Bout 2, (150lbs) Anthony Carrasco, Palo Alto P.D. vs. Lou Strickland, Dept of Homeland Security. This fight would go the distance but it would not be easy for either fighter. Carrasco made Strickland fight every second of every round. Carrasco kept Strickland in his range and threw punches in bunches. Strickland didn’t give any ground and kept a good defense and landed solid counters. Carrasco, winner by decision.

Bout 3, (Kickboxing) John Kaanehe, Alameda P.D. vs Chris Mercado, Oakland Fire Dept. Kaanehe came out strong the first round and seemed to be on his way to an easy victory. Between rounds Mercado listened to his corner and turned the tide by being more aggressive with his punches and kicks. Mercardo, winner by decision.

Bout 4, Kickboxing Johnny Pena, San Benito S.D. vs Wale Forrester, Oakland F.D. First 2 rounds were very close. Forrester had a little more left in the tank in the 3rd round to pull out a close decision win.

Bout 5, MMA (200lbs) Gene Gabriel, San Francisco P.D. vs Josh Webb, CHP, San Jose. Both guys showed good skills on the ground and standing. Webb was able to secure an arm bar right before the bell sounded to end the 1st round. Webb winner 1st round Arm Bar.

Bout 6, (180lbs) James Allen USCG San Francisco vs Jesse Peters, USCG Alameda. There was no feeling out period in this one, it was kill or be killed.  Allen landed the harder shot first and that was all it took. Allen winner 1st rd TKO.

Bout 7, (165lbs) Adam Ward, Oakland Housing Auth P.D. vs. Gino Sanchez, Hayward P.D. After an action packed 1st round and over hand right thrown by Ward that put Sanchez down, everyone knew they were in for a treat. The 2nd round was very close with both fighters having their moments. Ward found a home for his right hand in the 3rd round to seal the victory.

Bout 8, Kickboxing Brian Everett, Napa Co. Correction vs Greg Smith, Monterey Co. Corrections.  Everett outworked Smith to get the decision win.

Bout 9, (155lbs) Daniele McCollum, San Jose P.D. vs Janean Reynolds, CHP San Jose. This was the fight everyone was waiting for and for good reason. These ladies battled in the trenches for 3 solid rounds. The only break they took was when the bell sounded to end the round. McCollum showed a little more experience with her slips, counters and bodywork to claim the win.

Bout 10, (175lbs) UCA 4th ranked Jerry Ribeira, Oakland Housing Auth P.D. vs Mike Hagen, CHP, San Jose. It was the sweet science at it’s best. Crisp combinations, footwork, balance, head movement, angles and bodywork. Rebeira edged this one out to claim the decision victory.

Bout 11, 210lbs Main Event. Michael Froseca, Alameda Co. S.D. vs Ramon Jackson, Dept of Vetrans Affairs Police. 1st round was even due to a lot of feeling out.  In the 2nd round Jackson landed a solid right hand that stumbled Froseca. In the 3rd Jackson found his rhythm and timing to secure the win.

RIBEIRA TALKS TO SR: BATTLE OF THE BADGES ON COAST GUARD ISLAND, MAY 12

THE UCA #4 RANKED SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT STEPS UP IN WEIGHT

EDITOR IN CHIEF

SRMMA.COM

Tomorrow night, May 12, Coast Guard Island will be host to a BATTLE OF THE BADGES (BOTB) Charity Amateur Boxing/ Kickboxing/ MMA event that includes the number four ranked United Combat Association super middleweight fighter Jerry Ribeira. Although Ribeira originally wanted to take part in the MMA event first, then secondarily the kickboxing event, but unfortunately opponents couldn’t be found within the law enforcement, firefighters, or military amateur ranks that were available for those styles. On the positive side, an opponent was found for a boxing match and Ribeira jumped on the opportunity, although it’s at a higher weight than he has fought at before.
“I started boxing simply to work on my hands,” Ribeira told SR. “So that’s pretty cool to be ranked number four, it’s a cool thing. . . I’m fighting this guy at 180 lbs and I’ve never fought this heavy before, so that should be interesting.”
Ribeira, an officer of the Oakland Housing Authority PD, has fought in the BOTB before. He has been training by including his boxing workouts within a program of MMA training that he believes to be the best way to stay in fit conditioning for combat. His training at Combat Fitness – Rapacon’s Martial Art’s in Vallejo, CA (which is affiliated with The Pit, former UFC champion Chuck Liddell’s gym) has him feeling that he will be able to put on a show for the fan’s that isn’t a boring stand still fight.
“I just want to go out there and perform well,” Ribeira told SR. “(I want to) give the fans a good show, the fans that pay money to come out and watch us fight. They don’t want to see a boring, dance around kind of fight, nobody wants that.”

Coast Guard Island is in Alameda, CA, and tickets to the show are just $20 for charity.

The Cordova Girls Softball season has started and the Lady Ballers are back. They are not the original Lady Ballers, they are the new generation Lady Ballers.  The girls are only 8yrs old so I still consider them Baby Ballers. The original Lady Ballers started as 10 year olds in 2006. And for 6 years the team dominated, beating older teams, and winning many tournaments and championships. Those ladies have now moved on to play high school softball and other sports. The Baby Ballers are here to take their place. The girls have big shoes to fill but they will be getting help from their older sisters who played on the original Ballers. Coaching team sports, the talent pool comes in waves. In 2006 the wave of talent that came through Cordova Girls softball was a wave of speed, athleticism, drive, heart, and attitude. When the Lady Ballers stepped onto the field together there was chemistry and a trust between the players that made them unbeatable. It was an honor and privilege to coach the Lady Ballers for all those years.  As I look to the younger generation of Lady Ballers I hope for them what I had with my team. The UCA supports and wishes the 8U Lady Ballers much success this season and the seasons to come.

The March 31st Battle of the Badges Event was an action packed evening with some incredible fights. On most nights, the fight of the night honors would have gone to Dozier Vs. Kim, Williams Vs.Woienski or McDonald vs. Heredia. But very few could have expected the fireworks they witnessed from two fighters who were stepping into the ring for the first time. Nelly Mendoza, Fresno P.D. vs. Jodi Brown, Sacramento P.D. will go down in UCA history as one of the best fights of the year. What a fight it was. The excitement built with every round and the audience could tell they were watching something special. These fighters gave all they had, going back and forth, with endless energy. Just when you thought the fight was going one way it would swing back in favor of the other fighter. The high endurance, determination, heart and warrior spirit these ladies showed is certainly worthy of the Fight of the Night Honors they received March 31st. It is with great pleasure to award these fighters the UCA Fight of the Night award.

The nationally-acclaimed New York City Fire Department Boxing Team (“FDNY”) squares-off against a squad of New England Law Enforcement (“Team N.E.”) amateur boxers, Saturday night, May 19 in “Battle of the Badges 4,” at Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Two other great charities – NPSAL and FDNY Boxing Bravest – are also benefiting from Battle of the Badges 4.  We’re also very fortunate to have

Foxwoods Resort Casino in our corner this year as the host venue.  Without Foxwoods, as well as our generous sponsors, promoting a major sporting event like this would be impossible.”

The Galt United Boys U11 Soccer team brought home the Gold Cup last weekend from Manteca. The boys played in the highest division which was the “Premier” bracket. In the second game Galt faced Fresno’s Argentina Strikers and the boys came out with a 3-0 shutout. The Semi final game was against a very fast and aggressive Ceries Earthquake team and the score showed it as Galt fought hard to get the 2-0 victory. The Championship game matched Galt against a State level team, the Santa Rosa Barcelona Athleticos. The game was very close from start to finish but Galt wasn’t to be denied and the final score was 4-2 in favor of Galt. Congratulations to the Galt United Premier Soccer Team. The UCA is a proud sponsor of the Galt soccer team and wishes them continued success throughout the season.

Barrios will not be an easy task for Dorris. Barrios is currently undefeated and a Police Olympic Gold Medalist. This will be a test for both fighters. Win or lose this will be James Dorris last fight.

Bryan has been around the game a long time and has a lot of boxing knowledge to share with his boxers. 12 Rounds of Training boxers are always in great shape, fundamentally sound and come to fight. All three of  Bryan’s boxers had a good showing at the Sacramento Battle of the Badges last month.   Lindsay Dozier won the UCA Nor Cal Featherweight Title, Nelly Mendoza won “Fight of the Night” honors and Chris Martinez lost a close decision. The UCA #1 ranked Super Heavyweight Saul Ayon Kern Co. Sheriffs Office is ready to fight for the UCA Title. Ayon has not been boxing but he is in great shape. He has been running 25+ miles a week to prepare for the Baker to Vegas run April 21st. Ayon will be facing Eddie Martinez LASD for the UCA Super Heavyweight State Title in the August Sacramento Battle of the Badges. Martinez and Ayon have similar stories. Both are highly skilled fighters who have not fought in a few years. It has been difficult for them to find competition with the same experience. Saul Ayon was once a top ranked amateur who qualified for the Olympic Trials. Martinez is undefeated with wins over top ranked fighters Casey Johnson, Oakland P.D. and James Dorris Folsom P.D. Ayon and Martinez will be an exciting Super Heavyweight show-down.

An exciting night of boxing took place at the 18th annual Bakersfield Battle of the Badges Friday April 13th at The Dome. Boxers representing CDCR, BPD, CHP, KCPD, SLSO, BFD, DOJ, ICE, KCSO, and DPD filled the 12 bout fight card. The event started with a very competitive fight between Lynn Martinez, Bakersfield P.D. and Angela Molinar, CHP. Both ladies showed good skills and great conditioning. Martinez was announced the winner by decision.

The “Fight of the Night” honors went to Isaac Aleman, Bakersfield P.D. vs. Joshua Garcia, KCSO. The sheer will, effort, determination and sacrifice Aleman and Garcia showed is something that cannot be taught, it is something you are born with. They don’t know any other way then to leave their heart and soul in the ring. For three rounds they battled in the trenches. The judges should have thrown the score cards out and declared the fight a draw. It doesn’t seem fair to have a loser in a fight like this. Isaac Aleman was announced the winner. The fighters left the ring to a well deserved standing ovation from everyone in attendance.

In the second female bout of the night Samantha Callagy, BPD showed so much heart and never quit against a more experienced opponent in Connie Cazares, KCPD. Cazares picked up the win by decision.

Melvin Lopez, ICE took last year off but came back this year hungry and ready for battle. He won by decision over CDCR’s Heriberto Ruvalcaba. The event ended with Super Heavyweight’s Ricardo Martinez, Bakersfield Fire Dept vs. Stewart Porte, Kern Co. S.O. Porte picked up the decision win. Full fight card posted on the UCA results page.

Sacramento Battle of the Badges March 31, 2012 Under-Card Results

After the 1st round Brent Bugarin, Santa Clara S.D. vs. Marc Baes, CDCR had the makings of a great fight. To start the 2nd round both guys displayed good footwork as they looked for their opening. Bugarin saw his opening first and landed his combination which caused the referee to step in and stop the fight. “This kid (Bugarin) is good,” Baes said. “This is the type of fight I wanted. I don’t agree with the stoppage, I felt the fight was just warming up.” Bugarin is a young, humble, talented fighter who people will be hearing about. Bugarin won by 2nd round TKO.

No one expected to see the “Fight of the Night” when Jodi Brown, Sac P.D., and Nelly Mendoza, Fresno P.D., stepped into the ring for the first time. For 6 minutes everyone in attendance witnessed something special. These ladies showed so much heart, and gave everything they had. The feelings you have while you watch matches like Brown and Mendoza are what make boxing so special. Their heart and bravado can never be questioned. If Brown or Mendoza never fight again, they left a lasting impression on everyone who witnessed their fight. Brown was announced the winner by decision.

UCA 4th ranked Rafael Heredia, CDCR moved up in weight to take on 1-0 Dru McDonald Sac Metro Fire. McDonald drew first blood when he landed a shot that caused the referee to step in and give Heredia a standing 8 count.  Heredia cleared his head and returned the favor to McDonald by landing a hard shot to the head that prompted the referee to step in and give McDonald a standing 8 count. Heredia won the fight by decision and kept is undefeated streak alive.

Mark Tibbles , CDCR vs. Adan Castillo Yolo Co. Corrections. The first round looked like Tibbles would win the fight with his jab alone. Tibbles had the height and reach on Castillo and was using it perfectly. When the bell sounded to start the 2nd round Castillo came out like a different fighter. He fought on the inside and threw short hooks and upper cuts. One of Castillo’s hooks to the body got through causing Tibbles to take a knee. The referee stepped in and stopped the fight in the 2nd round. Castillo won 2nd round TKO.

Craig Hamblin, CDCR had the size and weight advantage over his opponent Joe Gatie, CDCR. However Team Gatie had a game plan and executed it perfectly. Gatie is coached by Gary McCoy an accomplished amateur with over 80 fights. Despite Hamblin’s best efforts, he did not have an answer for Gatie’s strategy. Gatie won by unanimous decision.

David Richardson, CDCR vs. Marco Montano, U.S Coast Guard. As soon as the bell sounded Richardson came forward and brought the fight to Montano. This was not a boxing match, this was a fight. In the 2nd round Montano caught Richardson with a hard shot causing the referee to step in and stop the fight. Montano won by 2nd round TKO.

UCA #2 ranked Neil Tremethick, U.S. Army vs. UCA #7 ranked Chris Martinez, Avenal P.D. Martinez came out the first round working his jab like a piston. Half way through the first round Tremethick turned southpaw and that seemed to turn the tide in his favor. Martinez rhythm and timing seemed to be thrown off by the southpaw style of Tremethick. The second and 3rd rounds were close with Tremethick winning with his speed and combinations. It was a technical, action packed fight with both boxers displaying a good skill set. Tremethick won by decision.

A fight broke out between Lindsay “Bull” Dozier and Christy “Killer” Kim Saturday night at the Sacramento Battle of the Badges. Both ladies left everything in the ring for a chance to walk out with the UCA NorCal Featherweight Title. Christy Kim (U.S. Air Force) in her first amateur boxing match came out hard. Kim nearly lived up to her name, “Killer” in the 1st round as she pressured and threw punches for destruction. Dozier, Fresno P.D., used her 1-1 fight experience and the instructions from her corner to stay out of harms way. Once the round was over Dozier’s coach Bryan Williams was waiting to give his fighter the instructions she needed. “Kim is just throwing the 1, 2. Keep your feet moving, work your jab. When she gets your timing down I want you to start throwing lead left hands.” The sign of a great fighter is being able to listen to your coach and execute the instructions given. Dozier avoided Kim’s bombs by using her footwork and throwing different combinations. The fight was very close after the 2nd round. Dozier went back to her corner and her coach was waiting to give her instructions. “I need you to go in at an angle, not straight in,” Williams said. The 3rd round picked up where the 2nd round left off. Back and fourth neither fighter giving any ground. What a fight! Lindsay Dozier was announced the winner by unanimous decision and UCA NorCal Featherweight Champion.

“I’m still humble,” Dozier told SRMMA. “I got into boxing to get into shape and I fell in love with the sport. Now I’m the UCA NorCal Champion, which definitely gives me more credibility moving forward.”

Even though Kim did not win, she is an athlete with a bright future. She is definitely a part of the new wave of young, hungry, talented boxers to look out for.

The LAPD continues to show Juan Bustamante support. On Wednesday the LAPD presented Juan with a framed signed event poster to show their support and appreciation for representing their department in the UCA title fight at the Sacramento Battle of the Badges event. Juan may have not won the fight but he can hold his head high knowing he has the support of his department, family and friends. He will always be a part of UCA history and welcome at any future Sacramento Battle of the Badges events as a guest or fighter. It was a pleasure going through this experience with Juan “Bad Blood” Bustamante.

There is nothing in sports that rivals the excitement of two big men throwing bombs at each other. Boxing’s big bangers took center stage when UCA #3 ranked Mike Gomez; CDCR took on UCA #4 ranked Richmond De Los Cientos, Sac Co. S.D for the UCA NorCal Super Heavyweight Title. This fight alone was worth the $20.00 price of admission into the Sacramento Battle of the Badges Event. Gomez is widely recognized as one of the hardest working guys in the gym when preparing for a fight. On Saturday night Gomez and De Los Cientos collided in the boxing ring to seize a priceless chance to determine who the top fighter in Northern California really is. De Los Cientos weighed in at 289lbs while Gomez weighed in at 252 and the weight and size difference showed. The first 2 rounds were very close. One round a piece going into the 3rd and final round. Early in the 3rd round Gomez was warned for hitting De Los Cientos behind the head. The referee gave Gomez a warning for the illegal blow. Before the action continued both fighters touched gloves and went back at it. Richmond showed signs of slowing down and Gomez smelled blood. Gomez put De Los Cientos down with a hard jab and the referee stepped in and ended the fight. Gomez won the UCA NorCal Title by 3rd TKO. With his win over De Los Cientos Gomez slides into the #2 spot in the Super Heavyweight Division. ‘People are telling me I need to fight for the Title”, Gomez said. “I know I’m not ready for Saul Ayon. (Courtesy SRMMAKern Co S.D.) I need at least 5 more fights before I’m ready for him. I hope Ayon is still around.” Gomez knows he is still raw and has a lot to learn however a fight with Rashaan Harrison, LASD or even Casey Johnson Oakland P.D. would be good match-ups to help prepare him for a UCA State Title fight.

Julie “J-Cat” Williams, CDCR San Quentin, the undefeated UCA #1 ranked female fighter in California took on newcomer Woienski, CDCR DVI at the Sacramento Battle of the Badges Event, March 31st. Even though it was Woienski first time in the ring Williams did not take her lightly. With 14 days notice Woienski was ready for battle. Williams was cautious with the new comer the 1st rd. Maybe a little too cautious because Woienski landed some hard shots to Williams head. Williams took control the 2nd rd. while Woienski won over the crowd with her toughness and heart. The 3rd round both ladies were landing some very hard shots but Williams experience prevailed.  Woienski never quit and finished the fight on her feet and had the fans on their feet as well. It took the judges awhile to gather up the scores. When the decision was finally announced Williams was the winner by split decision. Both ladies won in their own way. Woienski stepped into the ring for the first time against the best female fighter in the state and went the distance. Williams picked up another win and solidified her #1 ranking and became the Nor Cal UCA Champion.

Being Prepared

Posted In Blog

Juan Bustamante LAPD is doing everything he can to be 100% prepared for James Davis, CDCR.  Bustamante is sparring and training hard with top amateurs and pros.  Aside from training and sparring at his gym 818 Boxing, he is getting a lot of support from, LAPD partner, “Cage vs. Cons” Champion, Ishmael Gonzalez. Juan is also traveling to Las Vegas to spar and to get training tips from Pro fighter Jesus Gutierrez at Johnny Tocco’s Gym.

Bustamante has fought some of the UCA top ranked fighters, which include Chris Barrios LASD twice, Jamal Braithwaite Orange Co. S.D., and Brian Petrella Pasadena P.D.  Bustamante wants to test himself against the best out there and is looking forward to the challenge of fighting the best in NorCal.

Folsom Prison, Correctional Officer, James Davis is training and sparring everyday. He has 3 sparring partners preparing him for the UCA Light Heavyweight State Championship title fight. Pro fighters, Larry “Cyco” Ward, Juan Luna, and amateur fighter, Caesar Garcia. When these guys get in the ring with each other they don’t spar, they fight.

Over the past 2 years Davis has also stepped into the ring with UCA top ranked fighters. Jerry Ribeira, Oakland PD, Marcus Cox, Alameda Co. S.D. and Sonny Gerber, Grover Beach PD. Other than losing by decision to Gerber, and a draw with Cox, Davis has beaten every cop who stepped into the ring with him.

March 31st will determine who the #1 fighter in California is at 175lbs. When the bell rings to start the fight all the training, talking, and sacrifices will come down to that moment. There is nothing left to do, it’s fight time. One thing is for sure, when the winner is announced, the first UCA Light Heavyweight State Champion will be crowned.

Mar 2012 20

A lot of pressure is being put on the Main Event fighters in the Sacramento Battle of the Badges Boxing Event. The Director of Corrections, Richard Subia has made a friendly wager with the LA Police Chief, Charles Beck for the upcoming UCA State Championship Title Fight. Juan “Bad Blood” Bustamante LAPD vs. James “Doin Damage” Davis, Correctional Officer, Folsom Prison. If Davis wins, LA Police Chief, Charles Beck must hang a San Francisco Giants banner in his office for one week. If Bustamante wins CDCR Director Mr. Subia must hang an LA Dodgers banner in his office for one week. Not only are these fighters feeling pressure from family, friends, and coworkers now they are getting it from the Director and the LA Chief of Police. That makes for a great fight.

Scoring A Fight

Posted In Blog

California State Athletic Commission Scoring

If you’re a boxing fan, you know that judges can see a fight in many different ways. They use the same rules to decide the outcome of a match, but the scores can be greatly different. Here are some guidelines for you to score a bout and see how close you come to the judge’s decision.

Three judges score each bout on a 10-point must system. That means the winner of each round gets 10 points. The loser of the round gets 9 points or less. If you think the round is even, give both fighters 10 points. When there is a knockdown in the round, give the loser of the round 8 points; more than one knockdown and the loser gets 7 points. If a fighter gets knocked down three times in a round the fight is over. The referee can deduct a point or more, or even disqualify a fighter for rules violations such as low blows, holding, hitting on the break or hitting after the bell has been sounded.

Here are four things to look for in a fight.

  1. EFFECTIVE PUNCHES, Punches that land solidly and cleanly.
  2. EFFECTIVE AGGRESSIVENESS, This means being effective while also being aggressive; forcing the fight and landing punches.
  3. RING GENALSHIP, This is when the fighter takes control of the ring action.
  4. GOOD DEFENSE, This is when a fighter avoids punches while still keeping his hands ready offensively and counter punching.

Now you are ready to score a bout like a professional judge.

LAPD Boxing

Posted In Blog

Two fighters from the LAPD Boxing team have big fights this month. March 16th Ivan Guillermo will be having his pro Debut. On March 31st Juan Bustamante will be fighting for the UCA Light Heavyweight State Title.

The LAPD Boxing Team is a close knit group. When one of their teammates is fighting the whole team turns their focus on that fighter. One thing about the LAPD Boxing team you have to admire is they are like a family. Not only are their teammates supporting them but the whole dept and in some cases a whole city gets behind them.

Juan Bustamante was raised in the city of Azusa. Once the city heard about Juan fighting for a title in Sacramento the Mayor Joe Rocha organized a press conference to show his support.

This is the kind of support all Public Safety officers should get.  A lot has to be said about these officers who have families, work 40 plus hours a week, put their lives on the line everyday and still want to give back by training and competing to raise money for charity boxing events.

Ivan Guillermo will be fighting on the ALL STAR Promotions Combat United Boxing MMA Card. Ivan is a Los Angeles Police Officer Hollenbeck Division. Ivan Guillermo has accomplished a lot as an amateur boxer. He has competed in the International Police and Fire Games winning a bronze medal. He is a Police Olympic Gold Medalist, Main Event fighter, and no one can forget his three epic battles with Jorge Caamal from LASD. Ivan is going to test the waters at the Professional level March 16th in Montebello at the Quiet Cannon. He will be facing Victor Valenzuela also in his Pro Debut. The fight will be 4 rounds in the Jr Middleweight division.

UCA Countdown

Posted In Blog

57 days until fight time and both fighters are training hard for their UCA Light Heavyweight State Title Fight March 31st. James Davis and Juan Bustamante bring different styles to the fight. Davis is a work horse, a Joe Frazier type fighter. Always coming forward, wearing you down, digging shots to the body, elbows, and shoulders. Then going to the head.  Bustamante has fast hands, one punch knock out power and can also move and box. This is definitely a pick-em fight. One thing is for sure, the only thing holding them back from the UCA title, is each other.

James Davis is new to the sport of boxing. He had his first fight May 21st 2010 and hasn’t stopped training or fighting since. He fought in the 2011 NorCal Golden Gloves Tournament and will be competing in the 2012 Golden Gloves Tournament. Davis is a student of the game. He has fought guys heavier, guys with more experience and win or lose he chalks it up as a learning experience.  Regardless of the outcome March 31st, Davis will continue to train and learn. His goal is to become a successful professional fighter. Davis knows he has to test himself against the best fighters out there before he turns pro. March 31st will be a good test for him.

One thing about Juan Bustamante going into the fight is that he will not have a problem with nerves or fighting on the big stage. He is use to being the main event and fighting in the Big Shows. Juan has traveled to New York to fight NYPD’s finest fighters. In 2009 he fought in (Boxing Hall of Fame Treasurer) Josie Mejia’s Outdoor Boxing Event in Bell Gardens and on a Fox Sports Boxing televised event. Most memorable, Juan fought for Oscar DeLaHoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. The Golden Boy Promoted Event was held at Club Nokia. Bustamante battled UCA #1 ranked, pound for pound fighter, Chris Barrios in the Main Event. Both guys gave everything they had, Barrios picked up the win by decision.

Barrios Battles Bustamante on Feb. 24, 2011 ‘Fight Night Club’

LOS ANGELES, February 11th 2011 – Paid to protect and serve the members of their communities, a select group of Southern California’s finest law enforcement officers will enter the boxing ring with the intention to hit and not be hit. The Battle of the Badges Boxing Event will be featured on the season premiere of “Fight Night Club” at L.A. LIVE’s Club Nokia.

In the featured amateur attraction, it will be a highly anticipated rematch, when Chris “The Bull” Barrios, from the L.A. Sheriff Department, IRC Division, battles Juan “Bad Blood” Bustamante of the LAPD Foothill Division in a bout in the 200-pound division that is a rematch of a past fight and has already caused excitement in both officers’ departments. There is so much buzz surrounding the fight that the LAPD has dubbed this fight “Barrios vs. Bustamante II.”

“We are excited to have a ‘Battle of the Badges’ to kick off the 2011 season of ‘Fight Night Club’,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “These officers risk their lives everyday protecting us and I’m proud to have them competing on a Golden Boy Promotions show. I can’t wait to watch them battle it out in the ring to see which is the toughest department in LA.”

Israel (Izzy) Montes

Israel’s passion for boxing began with amateur boxing as a youth. He learned to box at the Washington Neighborhood Boxing Center and represented the California Dept of Correction in the Western States Police and Fire games 1998, 2001 and 2003 winning two gold medals and one silver medal. The highlight of Israel’s amateur boxing career was winning the Gold Medal in 2003 in front of his family and friends at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium.

In 2003, seeing his gym, the Washington Neighborhood Center in need of new equipment, gloves, bags and a new ring, he decided to put on the 1st Sacramento Battle of the Badges to raise money for the gym. The event has come a long way from 300 hundred people attending the first event at the Boys and Girls Club to sell-out crowds at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium and Raley Field.

Since starting the Sacramento Battle of the Badges in 2003, the event has raised over 75 thousand dollars to benefit local charities. The charities are chosen through careful consideration and at the recommendation of the fighters. “I want the fighters to know the sacrifices they make to compete benefits the local community and raises money for charities they are involved in.”

With 9 successful years, the Battle of the Badges has built camaraderie, solidarity and competitive sportsmanship among Law Enforcement and Firefighters. Israel Montes is very proud of what he started and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

TONY “The Tiger” LOPEZ

California Sports Hall of Fame 2011 Inductee

Tony “The Tiger” Lopez (born February 24, 1963), is a former professional boxer from Sacramento, California. He was a 3-Time World Boxing Champion. He is remembered for his victory in the 1988 The Ring Fight of the year by decision over Rocky Lockridge. He also fought against the Mexican legend Julio César Chávez in 1994 in Monterrey. He lost by TKO. Tony Lopez is now retired from boxing and runs a bail bond agency in Sacramento.

With his father a former pro and his older brother Sal already boxing in the amateurs, it wasn’t much of a stretch for precocious little Tony to follow in their footsteps. However the way it all started was a little bizarre. Ten year old Tony was about to have an altercation near his house, when a car pulled up. Inside were big brother Sal and Jerry Jacobs, Sal’s trainer, who was driving. Jacobs yelled “if you want to box, hop in.” More than a little curious because of his family’s involvement in the sport, the little tiger jumped in the back seat. This would take Tony on a journey in the punch-for-pay business, lasting 16 years. No one seems to know what happened to Tony’s neighborhood opponent that day. If he wanted to continue the fight, his only option would have been to shadow box.

Over the next several years Jerry Jacobs would school Tony in the intricacies of the sport and his pupil proved to be an excellent student. He must have absorbed the lessons well; his [mal amateur record was 47 and 2 and ranked #6 in the U.S. amateur standings. Sadly, personal issues in Jacobs’s life prevented him from being Tony’s trainer in the pros. During our interview Tony raised the question, do trainers make fighters or fighters make trainers? One thing is for sure: Lopez had the highest respect for Jerry and the skills he taught him. After nine years as an amateur, Tony was a polished boxer/puncher, not the over anxious ten year old boy who had his first fight in Reno, Nevada.

On May 3, 1983 Tony turned pro in Sacramento against Juan Rodriguez of San Juan, PR, and a veteran of 14 pro bouts. It didn’t take Lopez long to figure out Rodriguez, dropping him with a right to the head in the first minute of round one. Rising on unsteady legs the out-of -Towner blocked

a left hook with his jaw, tasting the canvas for a second time. His comer wisely tossed in the towel, saving their charge from further punishment.

It didn’t take Lopez long to build up a 12 and 0 record with only two going the distance. Having an outstanding older brother boxing certainly opened some doors for Tony, but once inside he had to produce.

As for the fight itself, it was voted Ring Magazine’s fight of the year. “I was standing in the hall waiting for the TV people to call me into the ring. Over 15,000 people were shouting Tony, Tony, Tony, I felt like the cement floor was vibrating beneath my feet.” At the sound of the first bell, Lockridge rushed across the ring and tried to bull the home town boy into the ropes. Commentators Gill Clancy and Tim Ryan were amazed at Lopez’s response. Clancy stated “it looks like two baby bulls in the ring; this Lopez kid is also strong.” Fighting behind a stinging left jab and overhand rights Lopez seemed to control the first round. In the second the challenger started dropping straight right hands through the champ’s defense, rocking him on several occasions.

Growing up in the south side of Sacramento, Tony was fortunate to have a family with strong values. His father Solomon (Sal Sr.) instilled a strong work ethic in his children. His mother Rachel was an excellent homemaker and a great cook. Most evenings found the entire family at the dinner table talking about the day’s events. Brother Sal Jr. was a ranking contender and a retired counselor from the State of California. His sisters Rosemary and Diane worked for University system and medical field respectively. Loving parents is a big advantage in the race for life!

In retirement, Tony is a successful business owner of Tony “The Tiger” Bail Bonds, Inc. Judging by the number of employees working for him and activity in his offices, business is going well. Early in his new line of work he met a very pretty process server, who would become his lovely wife Cathy. There is one other beautiful girl in Tony’s life: his daughter, Tatiana. Tony Lopez is a class act and a pleasure to be around.

David was trained by National Golden Glove Champion and Top Rank contender, Skipper “Saigon” Kelp and World Champion trainer, Chris Ben. He became a two-time All American that consisted of a bronze and silver medal in the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) National Tournament. He was also the team captain his senior year. David holds the UCA#1 spot at 154 lbs. He would like a rematch with Jorge “The Baby Faced Assassin” Caamal from LASD. They fought for the gold medal in the 2006 Police Olympics in San Diego. Their fight was a back and forth battle that could have gone either way. Jorge Caamal walked away with the win by split decision. Styles make fights and their style makes for a great fight. If they ever meet again, it will be a fight you won’t want to miss.

Loreto Garza:World Champion

Mr. Loreto Garza is currently a correctional officer at CMF but prior to his tenure as an officerhe had a very successful boxing career. Garza started boxing at 18 years old and did it for three years. He won the Golden Gloves award all three years and made the United States Boxing Team. He turned pro in 1983 at the age of 21. In 1988 he won the WBC Americas Light Welterweight Championship with a spectacular first-round knock-out of former World Champion Harry Arroyo. Later that year Garza knocked out former World Champion Charlie Brown in four rounds. In 1989, Garza, with a single right hand in the 7th round, knocked former world champion Joe Manley out cold. Later that year Garza won a unanimous decision in a 12-round battle to win the USBA Championship over #1 ranked contender Frankie Warren. Garza fought the last 5 rounds of that fight with his left eye swelled completely shut. Many boxing annals argued that Garza Vs. Warren should have been the fight of the year. On August 17, 1990, with only two weeks notice, Garza flew to Nice, France and won the WBA Light Welterweight world title by majority decision over Juan Coggi. Garza displayed beautiful counter punching in the fight. He came back to his hometown of Sacramento and defended his World Title against former World Champion Vinny Pazienza. Garza out-smarted and out-boxed Pazienza and had his face battered as Pazienza was being a dirty fighter. A frustrated fighter, Pazienza picked Garza up in the 11th round and tried to slam him in the ring. Pazienza would be disqualified for the incident. The following year Garza lost the belt to Edwin Rosario. He was promised another World Title shot but it seemed like all of the Champions would duck when it came to Garza. He retired from boxing in 1993.

Record: 32 Wins | 2 Losses | 1 Draw | 28 KOs

Will To Win

Posted In Blog

Match-ups are a funny thing; some are obvious, some are not. You could have 2 athletic guys with experience and the kill or be killed mentality and just automatically know that it’s going to be a good fight. It’s the reason you bought a ticket. You make sure you are in your seat when the fight starts. Then there are those other match-ups. You don’t know who the fighters are and you plan to mingle, get a drink or use the bathroom when they come on. The fighters may not have the best physique, the best jab, hook, or footwork. Yet they have what you don’t see. The will to win, the big heart, the, “never give up” mentality. Those matches carry that element of surprise. When the fighter is hurt, when he is behind on the scorecards, when he is faced with something he never expected. That’s when the “magic” happens. The fundamentals, technique, and skill go out the window and the fighter gives everything he has to win. He finds something inside himself that no one knew he had and maybe something he didn’t know he had himself. When the fight is over you realize you just witnessed something special. The will to win is a powerful thing.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department and deputies from the Sheriff’s Department will step into the ring on Friday December 2, 2011 for the annual “Fight for Life” Battle of the Badges boxing event to benefit City of Hope.

MONTEBELLO — Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and Los Angeles police officers are preparing to go toe-to-toe in the boxing ring to help the City of Hope battle cancer.
The 18th annual “Fight for Life: Battle of the Badges” began in 1994 after some East Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies befriended 9-year-old cancer patient Joshua Moreno and decided to become involved in his cause.
Though the young man who inspired the event succumbed to the disease, the annual charity event continues in his memory.

What a fight card it will be. In the Main Event Jorge Camaal LASD vs Ivan Guillermo LAPD. This is the rubber-match that both fighters have been waiting for. This fight will go down as fight of the night for the 3rd time. Jorge and Ivan are Police Olympic Gold Medalist and have a lot of boxing experience.

In the co-main event Chris Barrios LASD vs John Negrete LAPD. Chris is undefeated with wins over top boxers, Juan Bustamante LAPD and Oscar Rodriguez LASD. John Negrete will be a tough opponent for Chris. John is a Police Olympic Gold Medalist and has more experience than Chris which may give John a slight advantage. This fight will definitely clarify who is number 1 at 190lbs.

Pictured above: LA Police Chief Charles Beck, Ivan
Guillermo, Jorge Camaal, LA Sheriff Leroy Baca

Ray Encinas LAPD will square off with Angel Vasquez LASD in a rematch. Angel squeezed out the victory in their first meeting. This fight has a chance to edge out Camaal vs Guillermo for fight of the night.

To give the fans something to talk about during intermission, the always exciting Juan Bustamante LAPD will be fighting Mike Hernandez LASD. Make sure you are in your seat for this one.
Whatever the outcome from this event, whether the competitors win or lose, they are all in agreement that the true winner here is City of Hope and the individuals they treat yearly.

Boxing people are a special breed, denizens of a strange world that few outsiders see and even fewer understand. It’s a dark world that takes what’s most savage in man and pushes it center stage against a backdrop of exploitation and pain. But beyond the spectacle of violent confrontation, boxing offers courage and beauty, loyalty and strength. Its adherents live in a world of flattened noses, scarred faces, beautifully muscled bodies and the will to overcome insurmountable odds. Boxing is like a narcotic, the most pervasive of drugs and once hooked you never get it out of your system.

UCA Ranking

Posted In Blog

The UCA is not a sanctioning body, we do not regulate boxing. That is left up to the California State Athletic Commission and USA Boxing. The UCA limits its role in boxing to ranking boxers. We control only the title, not the event. There is no cost to the event promoter or the boxers competing for a UCA title belt.
