Brian Stevens with Coach Armando Guzman

The contracts have been signed, the fight has been approved and the belt has been made. The second UCA mega fight this year will take place at the SoCal Battle of the Badges, Agua Caliente Casino and Resort on Saturday July 21st.  #1 ranked Brian Stevens, LASD vs. 2nd ranked Jamaal Brathwaite, Orange Co. Sheriff’s Dept for the UCA Cruiserweight Title. This matchup has the makings of being one of the most highly skilled competitive fights of the year. Both fighters will finally have a chance to show everyone how good they really are. Jamaal Brathwaite, Orange Co. Sheriff’s Dept is a terrific fighter and poses a tremendous challenge for the #1 Ranked Brian Stevens, LASD. There is no doubt both fighters will put it all on the line when they step into the ring. If Stevens expects to win against the more experienced Brathwaite he must take chances. Stevens can not sit back and wait for an opening. He must engage early. Stevens has to be the hunter. Brathwaite will be looking to land heavy bombs as soon as the bell rings. Stevens and Brathwaite face their toughest challenge in each other. It is going to be a tough fight; both fighters are going to be pushed harder than ever before. The one who can endure the pain, not break and push through, will come out on the other side as the UCA Cruiserweight Champion.

Five Fighters are training hard under Bryan Williams at www.12roundsoftraining.com for the upcoming LA Battle of the Badges July 27th. You can expect his fighters to be in great shape and well schooled in the sweet science. Williams knows what it takes to compete at a high level and instills that discipline and dedication in his fighters.

Also on the card is CMC Correctional Officer and CMC Spartan’s offensive guard Kannon Lariba. He will be squaring off with Mike Frazier from LASD. Lariba is looking forward to the challenge and training hard at Santa Maria Boxing Club. Preparing Lariba for his fight with the #2 ranked Heavyweight is Terry Cook, Makani Sarellano and Will Cheatle.

Craig Hamblin, CDCR Solano will be taking on the 3rd ranked Super Heavyweight Rahsaan Harrison, LASD. Hamblin is being trained by Anthony Alexander at Elk Grove Muay Thai & Boxing. www.norcalmuaythaiboxing.com.“This is the lightest I have been. Juan with Coach Maurice Ferguson

The rumor is true. Juan “Bad Blood” Bustamante, LAPD will be turning pro.  July 27th will be the last time LAPD Officer, Juan Bustamante will be fighting as an amateur. Bustamante will be entering the professional boxing circuit following his fight with LASD Deputy, Erik Ramirez.  Bustamante has fought some of the biggest names in Public Safety (Chris Barrios, Jamaal Brathwaite, and James Davis). As a member of the Los Angeles Police Department Boxing team, Bustamante fought in many main events. Most current, his 4 round battle with James Davis, CDCR for the UCA State title.  Bustamante has been fortunate enough to fight for Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy promotions on the

Shane Mosley Boxing Gym

under card fight for Golden Boy presents Nokia Fight night (vs. Chris Barrios, LASD). Bustamante has fought for numerous amateur titles, Battle of the Badges and Commander Cups. When asked about transitioning to the pro level, he replied “I’ve been blessed with fighting some of the best Peace Officers, Firefighters and Military Personnel in the nation. I’ve won some exciting, high profile fights and lost some hard fought battles. My road to the professional circuit has not been an easy one and that’s why I think I will do well. When I step into the ring for my pro debut, I’m not going to just represent myself, my family, my boxing club and Police Department. I will be representing every Peace Officer, Firefighter and Military brother/sister that has ever put on a pair of boxing gloves and tested themselves in the boxing ring.” When asked if he had any details about his pro debut, he said simply “My coach (Maurice Ferguson) has me in the gym training hard everyday and, we gotta look good for Suga Shane (Mosley) on July 27th”

The LA Battle of the Badges Event is shaping up to be a good one. With 8 ranked fighters and new fighters looking to break into the top ten this is a card you don’t want to miss.

On July 27th at the Quiet Canon, Montebello California the #1 ranked Jr. Middleweight David Bermudez, East Bay Regional Parks PD will face 2nd ranked Jorge “Baby Face Assassin” Caamal, LASD. When the bell rings rest assured these guys will engage in a Jr. Middleweight war.

Also featured on the card will be 2nd ranked Mike “I Will Amaze Ya” Frazier, coming off Fight of the Night honors in his last fight against Josh Skeber, LAPD. Frazier will be facing the tough and athletic Kannon Lariba from CDCR CMC Prison.

3rd ranked Rahsaan “Mr. Nice Guy” Harrison, will face Craig Hamblin, CDCR Solano Prison. Harrison is not looking past Hamblin but he is looking to get a rematch with the #1 ranked Casey Johnson, Oakland PD. Hamblin will be taking on a more experienced fighter in Harrison but is up for the challenge.

4th ranked Juan “Bad Blood” Bustamante, LAPD will take on 7th ranked Erik “Lone Wolf” Ramirez, LASD. Both fighters are well rounded and not afraid to go toe to toe.

8th ranked Chris Martinez, Avenal PD will face 7th ranked Angel Vasquez, LASD in a defining bout. The winner of this fight will definitely shake up the welterweight division and be knocking on the door for a title shot.

Jeff “The Silent One” Flotree, LASD will take on George “The Veterano” Lopez, LAPD.  These fighters are both seasoned vets and have more fights than everyone on the card combined. These guys have been through many adverse situations in their boxing career and nothing is really going to faze them. This fight may simply come down to who is in better shape.

New fighters stepping into the ring looking to make an impression are Roxanne “The Little Natural” Chavez, LASD vs Tysheanna Alewine, Federal Bureau of Prisons. Roger “Powershot” Garcia   LA Co. Court Services vs Jesus Cerda, Fresno PD and Remin “MMA” Pineda, LASD vs Juan Avila, Fresno PD.

More details to come as the fight approaches.

The UCA #1 ranked Jr. Middleweight wrapped up his two week mini training camp this week. David Bermudez, East Bay Regional Parks PD trained and sparred with open amateur boxers at Newcastle’s Ringside Gym. Ryan Kotey the 2 time National Collegiate Champion from University of Nevada, Reno was brought in for Bermudez and proved to be great work for the #1 ranked fighter. Bermudez is preparing for perhaps his toughest challenge in Jorge “The Baby Face Assassin” Caamal, LASD. Bermudez will step into the ring with Caamal for the second time, July 27th, in the Los Angeles Battle of the Badges Boxing Event.  Both guys are gifted athletes and eager to prove they are #1 at 154lbs.

Is it time for boxing to have open scoring? Football, baseball, basketball, wrestling and nearly every mainstream sport has it. Why not boxing? If there were open scoring you could keep track of who is ahead. You could root for the underdog and become more involved in the fight. Open scoring could attract more boxing fans and help improve the integrity of the sport.  If a boxer knew he was behind on the scorecards it would force him to press the action and make the fight more exciting. With open scoring a fighter couldn’t claim he thought he was winning.  If a fighter knew he was losing he could put it all on the line to turn the tide back in his favor, win the remaining rounds or go for the knockout.

Boxing fans are expected to sit through a whole fight with no clue of what the outcome will be, other than their own opinion. As of late the opinions of boxing fans oftentimes ends up being completely different from the judges scoring the fight. When the fight is over, the cards are tabulated and the decision is announced. The fighters, fans, and trainers have no option but to accept the decision of the judge’s scorecards. The judges are not held accountable and are guaranteed a paycheck regardless of how they scored the bout. Maybe the judges should have to explain why they scored the fight the way they did before they get paid. The judges should be held accountable for their performance just like the referees and boxers are.  Until there is open scoring in boxing everyone will be kept in the dark. The score is a secret and sometimes it’s a nasty secret.

The LASD Boxing Team is training hard under LASD Coach Mike Young for the upcoming LA Battle of the Badges. The event will take place July 27th at the Quiet Canon in Montebello, California.

The card is stacked with Top Ranked fighters. The most intriguing fight on the card has to be the much anticipated rematch between UCA #1 ranked David Bermudez, East Bay Regional Parks PD and  2nd ranked Jorge “The Baby Face Assassin” Caamal, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept. Bermudez and Caamal met for the first time in the 2006 Police Games, in San Diego. They were fighting for the 156lb open class Gold Medal. They put on one of the best fights in Police Olympic history. For 3 rounds it was flawless crisp combinations, counter punching, and best of all, the body attack. Caamal picked up the split decision win.

Also on the card will be Juan “Bad Blood” Bustamante, LAPD dropping down another weight class to take on the highly skilled, 2011 Police Olympic Silver Medalist, UCA 5th ranked Erik Ramirez, LASD at 165lbs.  Rumor is, Bustamante will be turning pro after this fight.

Another great fight is 8th ranked Chris Martinez, Avenal PD vs. 7th ranked Angel “The Natural” Vasquez, LASD. Martinez lost a tough fight to Neil Tremethick, U.S. Army in March and has his sights on getting back in the win column. Vasquez is coming off two great battles with Ray Encinas, LAPD.  This match-up has “Fight of the Night” written all over it.

In the Heavyweight division the fighter with perhaps the best nickname in boxing, UCA 2nd ranked Mike “I will Amaze Ya” Frazier from LASD will be taking on Kannon Lariba, CDCR CMC Prison.

These are just a few of the fights on this exciting card. More info to come.

The Sacramento Battle of the Badges UCA Championship poster hangs in Freddie Roach’s world famous Wild Card Gym, home to Manny Pacquiao. Manny is facing a tough and hungry opponent in Timothy Bradley, 28-0  June 9th, 2012.  There will definitely be fireworks in this Super Fight. The light guys are always exciting to watch. They are faster, have higher cardio, and throw a higher volume of punches. This should be a good one.

Juan Bustamante, LAPD had an opportunity to talk with and give Shane Mosley a UCA shirt at Shane’s recent USA Boxing event June 1st in Pomona, California. Shane Mosley’s son was featured as the main event on the card and he won.

Mosley began boxing as an 8-year-old and by the mid-1980s he emerged onto the national scene. He became the U.S. Amateur Champion at lightweight in 1989 and earned a silver medal in that year’s world junior championships in Puerto Rico. In 1990, he won another U.S. Amateur title at lightweight and represented his country at the Goodwill Games, where he earned a bronze medal in the 132-pound weight class. Seen as a strong professional prospect as an amateur Mosley turned pro in 1992. As an amateur he had 260 amateur fights with a record of 250-10.

Mosley is a former four-time world champion at 135, 147, and 154 pounds and future Hall of Famer. Mosley was named the Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association in 1998.  Mosley has been considered among the sport’s best pound-for-pound fighters. Shane Mosley is a class act in and out of the ring and a great role model for young amateur boxers.

There will not be a Police & Fire Olympic Gold Medalist crowned this year in boxing. It is with sincere regret that the Boxing competition has been cancelled for the 2012 U.S. Police & Fire Championships. There were not enough boxers signed up to make it a competition. Representatives from the Sacramento Battle of the Badges and LA Battle of the Badges are meeting with the Police & Fire Olympic Committee next month to discuss how to work together to promote next years boxing tournament and prevent this from happening again.

Deep in the heart of Yolo County in the town of Woodland, boxers are training hard and learning the sweet science. One fighter in particular is training extra hard. Yolo County Correctional Officer, Adan Castillo.  Castillo is coming off a 2nd rd KO win at the March 31st, Sacramento Battle of the Badges event.  He is looking to make a move and fight a top contender in the next Battle of the Badges. In order to do so, Adan is going to depend on the experience and knowledge of his coach Richard Munoz to take him to the next level.  Munoz is an accomplished amateur and has experience as a professional fighter. Castillo is in one of the toughest divisions. With names like, Chris Barrios, Luis Vicino and Marcus Cox his quest for a UCA title will not be easy. Castillo is looking forward to the challenge and has already begun training.  The UCA wishes Adan Castillo luck.

Women’s boxing will be introduced as a sport at the Summer Olympics in London this year, and the United States will have at least one representative.

Marlen Esparza, 22, became the first American female boxer to qualify for the summer games this week, according to the New York Times.

Esparza, who is from Houston, defeated Luu Thi Duyen of Vietnam on Tuesday to earn her Olympic berth, the Times reports.

Two other female boxers from the U.S. – Quanitta Underwood, 28, and Claressa Shields, 17 – were eliminated from the qualifying tournament, the Women’s World Boxing Championships, which are being held in China this week. However, they may still be eligible for a spot in the Summer Olympics, based on the decision of an international commission in the upcoming weeks, according to the Times.

Women’s boxing will feature three weight divisions in the Olympics: featherweight (112 pounds), lightweight (132 pounds) and middleweight (165 pounds), as opposed to the 10 divisions in men’s boxing. Esparza will compete in the featherweight category.

Over 700 fight fans showed up to watch Law Enforcement, Firefighters, and Military fighters battle it out for charity at the Alameda Battle of the Badges Saturday night. A mix of Boxing, MMA and Kickboxing made up the 11 bout fight card.  The proceeds from the event supported the California Narcotics Officers Memorial Fund, SMF, NEFA and the California Narcotic Officers Association Reg. 1.

The night started off with two gunslingers who were anxious to get it on. As soon as the bell rang Omar Salem, Napa P.D. and David Lloyd, Alameda P.D. (195lbs) went at it. Salem came out like a sharp shooter with his one-two punch combo. Lloyd fought tough but did not have an answer to avoid Salem’s punches. Lloyd suffered two knockdowns before the referee stepped in to stop the fight. Salem, winner 1st rd TKO.

Bout 2, (150lbs) Anthony Carrasco, Palo Alto P.D. vs. Lou Strickland, Dept of Homeland Security. This fight would go the distance but it would not be easy for either fighter. Carrasco made Strickland fight every second of every round. Carrasco kept Strickland in his range and threw punches in bunches. Strickland didn’t give any ground and kept a good defense and landed solid counters. Carrasco, winner by decision.

Bout 3, (Kickboxing) John Kaanehe, Alameda P.D. vs Chris Mercado, Oakland Fire Dept. Kaanehe came out strong the first round and seemed to be on his way to an easy victory. Between rounds Mercado listened to his corner and turned the tide by being more aggressive with his punches and kicks. Mercardo, winner by decision.

Bout 6, (180lbs) James Allen USCG San Francisco vs Jesse Peters, USCG Alameda. There was no feeling out period in this one, it was kill or be killed.  Allen landed the harder shot first and that was all it took. Allen winner 1st rd TKO.

Bout 7, (165lbs) Adam Ward, Oakland Housing Auth P.D. vs. Gino Sanchez, Hayward P.D. After an action packed 1st round and over hand right thrown by Ward that put Sanchez down, everyone knew they were in for a treat. The 2nd round was very close with both fighters having their moments. Ward found a home for his right hand in the 3rd round to seal the victory.

Bout 8, Kickboxing Brian Everett, Napa Co. Correction vs Greg Smith, Monterey Co. Corrections.  Everett outworked Smith to get the decision win.

Bout 9, (155lbs) Daniele McCollum, San Jose P.D. vs Janean Reynolds, CHP San Jose. This was the fight everyone was waiting for and for good reason. McCollum showed a little more experience with her slips, counters and bodywork to claim the win.

Bout 10, (175lbs) UCA 4th ranked Jerry Ribeira, Oakland Housing Auth P.D. vs Mike Hagen, CHP, San Jose. It was the sweet science at it’s best. Crisp combinations, footwork, balance, head movement, angles and bodywork. Rebeira edged this one out to claim the decision victory.

S.D. vs Ramon Jackson, Dept of Vetrans Affairs Police. 1st round was even due to a lot of feeling out.  In the 2nd round Jackson landed a solid right hand that stumbled Froseca. The Cordova Girls Softball season has started and the Lady Ballers are back. They are not the original Lady Ballers, they are the new generation Lady Ballers.  The girls are only 8yrs old so I still consider them Baby Ballers. The original Lady Ballers started as 10 year olds in 2006. And for 6 years the team dominated, beating older teams, and winning many tournaments and championships. Those ladies have now moved on to play high school softball and other sports. The Baby Ballers are here to take their place. The girls have big shoes to fill but they will be getting help from their older sisters who played on the original Ballers. Coaching team sports, the talent pool comes in waves. In 2006 the wave of talent that came through Cordova Girls softball was a wave of speed, athleticism, drive, heart, and attitude. When the Lady Ballers stepped onto the field together there was chemistry and a trust between the players that made them unbeatable. It was an honor and privilege to coach the Lady Ballers for all those years.  As I look to the younger generation of Lady Ballers I hope for them what I had with my team. The UCA supports and wishes the 8U Lady Ballers much success this season and the seasons to come.

The March 31st Battle of the Badges Event was an action packed evening with some incredible fights. On most nights, the fight of the night honors would have gone to Dozier Vs. Kim, Williams Vs.Woienski or McDonald vs. Heredia. But very few could have expected the fireworks they witnessed from two fighters who were stepping into the ring for the first time. Nelly Mendoza, Fresno P.D. vs. Jodi Brown, Sacramento P.D. will go down in UCA history as one of the best fights of the year. What a fight it was. The excitement built with every round and the audience could tell they were watching something special. These fighters gave all they had, going back and forth, with endless energy. Just when you thought the fight was going one way it would swing back in favor of the other fighter. The high endurance, determination, heart and warrior spirit these ladies showed is certainly worthy of the Fight of the Night Honors they received March 31st. It is with great pleasure to award these fighters the UCA Fight of the Night award.

The Galt United Boys U11 Soccer team brought home the Gold Cup last weekend from Manteca. The boys played in the highest division which was the “Premier” bracket. The first game was against a top team from Redding,Ca and Galt was far superior and it resulted in a 8-0 win for Galt. In the second game Galt faced Fresno’s Argentina Strikers and the boys came out with a 3-0 shutout. The Semi final game was against a very fast and aggressive Ceries Earthquake team and the score showed it as Galt fought hard to get the 2-0 victory. The Championship game matched Galt against a State level team, the Santa Rosa Barcelona Athleticos. The game was very close from start to finish but Galt wasn’t to be denied and the final score was 4-2 in favor of Galt. Congratulations to the Galt United Premier Soccer Team. The UCA is a proud sponsor of the Galt soccer team and wishes them continued success throughout the season.

Greg Huerta started Smash Time Boxing Club in Sacramento in 2009. Huerta has been in the fight game a long time and has a lot to offer his fighters. He started training fighters in 1978 for the Sacramento State Boxing Team with Head Boxing Coach Hank Elespuru. He also worked beside Don Conley at the Washington Neighborhood Center, “I learned a lot from Hank and Don,” Greg said. Huerta took that knowledge and trained fighters at Sacramento Pal and Capital City Boxing before opening his own gym.

Huerta trains both amateur and professional boxers but has a special interest in training public safety officers. Huerta’s own background is in Public safety. He started his career with the Department of Corrections in 1979, and retired as a Parole Agent 2 in 2008 he continued to work for CDCR and is now working with Child protective Services.

Greg Huerta is one of those coaches that does it for the love of the sport and to see his fighters achieve success.  Greg is also the trainer of the newly crowned UCA light heavyweight champion, James Davis, CDCR Folsom Prison. The UCA looks forward to seeing more of his public safety fighters, in the future.

Bryan Williams, Fresno P.D. will be moving into his new 12 Rounds of Training Boxing Gym next week at the Fresno Kickboxing Academy. The gym offers Jujitsu, kickboxing, MMA and boxing. Bryan is the head boxing coach at the gym. Bryan trains a lot of cops, military fighters and top ranked amateurs. Bryan has been around the game a long time and has a lot of boxing knowledge to share with his boxers. 12 Rounds of Training boxers are always in great shape, fundamentally sound and come to fight. All three of  Bryan’s boxers had a good showing at the Sacramento Battle of the Badges last month.   Lindsay Dozier won the UCA Nor Cal Featherweight Title, Nelly Mendoza won “Fight of the Night” honors and Chris Martinez lost a close decision. To become a good boxer you have to have a good coach.

The UCA #1 ranked Super Heavyweight Saul Ayon Kern Co. Sheriff’s Office is ready to fight for the UCA Title. Ayon has not been boxing but he is in great shape. He has been running 25+ miles a week to prepare for the Baker to Vegas run April 21st. Ayon will be facing Eddie Martinez LASD for the UCA Super Heavyweight State Title in the August Sacramento Battle of the Badges. Martinez and Ayon have similar stories. Both are highly skilled fighters who have not fought in a few years. It has been difficult for them to find competition with the same experience. Saul Ayon was once a top ranked amateur who qualified for the Olympic Trials. Martinez is undefeated with wins over Casey Johnson, Oakland Police Dept. and James Dorris Folsom Police Dept. Ayon and Martinez will be an exciting Super Heavyweight show-down.

An exciting night of boxing took place at the 18th annual Bakersfield Battle of the Badges Friday April 13th at The Dome. Boxers representing CDCR, BPD, CHP, KCPD, SLSO, BFD, DOJ, ICE, KCSO, and DPD filled the 12 bout fight card. The event started with a very competitive fight between Lynn Martinez, Bakersfield P.D. and Angela Molinar, CHP. Both ladies showed good skills and great conditioning. Martinez was announced the winner by decision.

The “Fight of the Night” honors went to Isaac Aleman, Bakersfield P.D. vs. Joshua Garcia, KCSO. The sheer will, effort, determination and sacrifice Aleman and Garcia showed is something that cannot be taught, it is something you are born with. They don’t know any other way then to leave their heart and soul in the ring. For three rounds they battled in the trenches. The judges should have thrown the score cards out and declared the fight a draw. It doesn’t seem fair to have a loser in a fight like this. Isaac Aleman was announced the winner. The fighters left the ring to a well deserved standing ovation from everyone in attendance.

In the second female bout of the night Samantha Callagy, BPD showed so much heart and never quit against a more experienced opponent in Connie Cazares, KCPD. Cazares picked up the win by decision.

Melvin Lopez, ICE took last year off but came back this year hungry and ready for battle. He won by decision over CDCR’s Heriberto Ruvalcaba. The event ended with Super Heavyweight’s Ricardo Martinez, Bakersfield Fire Dept vs. Stewart Porte, Kern Co. S.O. Porte picked up the decision win. Full fight card posted on the UCA results page.

Sacramento Battle of the Badges March 31, 2012 Under-Card Results

After the 1st round Brent Bugarin, Santa Clara S.D. vs. Marc Baes, CDCR had the makings of a great fight. To start the 2nd round both guys displayed good footwork as they looked for their opening. Bugarin saw his opening first and landed his combination which caused the referee to step in and stop the fight. “This kid (Bugarin) is good,” Baes said. “This is the type of fight I wanted. I don’t agree with the stoppage, I felt the fight was just warming up.” Bugarin is a young, humble, talented fighter who people will be hearing about. Bugarin winner, 2nd round TKO.

No one expected to see the “Fight of the Night” when Jodi Brown, Sac P.D., and Nelly Mendoza, Fresno P.D., stepped into the ring for the first time. For 6 minutes everyone in attendance witnessed something special. These ladies showed so much heart, and gave everything they had. The feelings you have while you watch matches like Brown and Mendoza are what make boxing so special. Their heart and bravado can never be questioned. If Brown or Mendoza never fight again, they left a lasting impression on everyone who witnessed their fight. Brown was announced the winner by decision.

UCA 4th ranked Rafael Heredia, CDCR moved up in weight to take on 1-0 Dru McDonald Sac Metro Fire. McDonald drew first blood when he landed a shot that caused the referee to step in and give Heredia a standing 8 count.  Heredia cleared his head and returned the favor to McDonald by landing a hard shot to the head that prompted the referee to step in and give McDonald a standing 8 count. Heredia won the fight by decision and kept is undefeated streak alive.

Mark Tibbles , CDCR vs. Adan Castillo Yolo Co. Corrections. The first round looked like Tibbles would win the fight with his jab alone. Tibbles had the height and reach on Castillo and was using it perfectly. When the bell sounded to start the 2nd round Castillo came out like a different fighter. He fought on the inside and threw short hooks and upper cuts. One of Castillo’s hooks to the body got through causing Tibbles to take a knee. The referee stepped in and stopped the fight in the 2nd round. Castillo winner, 2nd round TKO.

Craig Hamblin, CDCR had the size and weight advantage over his opponent Joe Gatie, CDCR. However Team Gatie had a game plan and executed it perfectly. Gatie is coached by Gary McCoy an accomplished amateur with over 80 fights. Despite Hamblin’s best efforts, he did not have an answer for Gatie’s strategy. Gatie winner by unanimous decision.

David Richardson, CDCR vs. Marco Montano, U.S Coast Guard. As soon as the bell sounded Richardson came forward and brought the fight to Montano. This was not a boxing match, this was a fight. In the 2nd round Montano caught Richardson with a hard shot causing the referee to step in and stop the fight. Montano winner by 2nd round TKO.

UCA #2 ranked Neil Tremethick, U.S. Army vs. UCA #7 ranked Chris Martinez, Avenal P.D. Martinez came out the first round working his jab like a piston. Half way through the first round Tremethick turned southpaw and that seemed to turn the tide in his favor. Martinez rhythm and timing seemed to be thrown off by the southpaw style of Tremethick. The second and 3rd rounds were close with Tremethick winning with his speed and combinations. It was a technical, action packed fight with both boxers displaying a good skill set. Tremethick winner by decision.

A fight broke out between Lindsay “Bull” Dozier and Christy “Killer” Kim Saturday night at the Sacramento Battle of the Badges. Both ladies left everything in the ring for a chance to walk out with the UCA NorCal Featherweight Title. Christy Kim (U.S. Air Force) in her first amateur boxing match came out hard. Kim nearly lived up to her name, “Killer” in the 1st round as she pressured and threw punches for destruction. Dozier, Fresno P.D., used her 1-1 fight experience and the instructions from her corner to stay out of harms way. Once the round was over Dozier’s coach Bryan Williams was waiting to give his fighter the instructions she needed. “Kim is just throwing the 1, 2. Keep your feet moving, work your jab. When she gets your timing down I want you to start throwing lead left hands.” The sign of a great fighter is being able to listen to your coach and execute the instructions given. Dozier avoided Kim’s bombs by using her footwork and throwing different combinations. The fight was very close after the 2nd round. Dozier went back to her corner and her coach was waiting to give her instructions. “I need you to go in at an angle, not straight in,” Williams said. The 3rd round picked up where the 2nd round left off. Back and fourth neither fighter giving any ground. What a fight! Lindsay Dozier was announced the winner by unanimous decision and UCA NorCal Featherweight Champion.

“I’m still humble,” Dozier told SRMMA. “I got into boxing to get into shape and I fell in love with the sport. Now I’m the UCA NorCal Champion, which definitely gives me more credibility moving forward.”

Even though Kim did not win, she is an athlete with a bright future. She is definitely a part of the new wave of young, hungry, talented boxers to look out for.

The LAPD continues to show Juan Bustamante support. On Wednesday the LAPD presented Juan with a framed signed event poster to show their support and appreciation for representing their department in the UCA title fight at the Sacramento Battle of the Badges event. Juan may have not won the fight but he can hold his head high knowing he has the support of his department, family and friends. He will always be a part of UCA history and welcome at any future Sacramento Battle of the Badges events as a guest or fighter. It was a pleasure going through this experience with Juan “Bad Blood” Bustamante.

There is nothing in sports that rivals the excitement of two big men throwing bombs at each other. Boxing’s big bangers took center stage when UCA #3 ranked Mike Gomez; CDCR took on UCA #4 ranked Richmond De Los Cientos, Sac Co. S.D for the UCA NorCal Super Heavyweight Title. This fight alone was worth the $20.00 price of admission into the Sacramento Battle of the Badges Event. Gomez is widely recognized as one of the hardest working guys in the gym when preparing for a fight. On Saturday night Gomez and De Los Cientos collided in the boxing ring to seize a priceless chance to determine who the top fighter in Northern California really is. De Los Cientos weighed in at 289lbs while Gomez weighed in at 252 and the weight and size difference showed. The first 2 rounds were very close. One round a piece going into the 3rd and final round. Early in the 3rd round Gomez was warned for hitting De Los Cientos behind the head. The referee gave Gomez a warning for the illegal blow. Before the action continued both fighters touched gloves and went back at it. Richmond showed signs of slowing down and Gomez smelled blood. Gomez put De Los Cientos down with a hard jab and the referee stepped in and ended the fight. Gomez won the UCA NorCal Title by 3rd TKO. With his win over De Los Cientos Gomez slides into the #2 spot in the Super Heavyweight Division. ‘People are telling me I need to fight for the Title”, Gomez said. “I know I’m not ready for Saul Ayon. (Courtesy SRMMAKern Co S.D.) I need at least 5 more fights before I’m ready for him. I hope Ayon is still around.” Gomez knows he is still raw and has a lot to learn however a fight with Rahsaan Harrison, LASD or even Casey Johnson Oakland P.D. would be good match-ups to help prepare him for a UCA State Title fight.

Julie “J-Cat” Williams, CDCR San Quentin, the undefeated UCA #1 ranked female fighter in California took on newcomer Woienski, CDCR DVI at the Sacramento Battle of the Badges Event, March 31st. Even though it was Woienski first time in the ring Williams did not take her lightly. With 14 days notice Woienski was ready for battle. Williams was cautious with the new comer the 1st rd. Maybe a little too cautious because Woienski landed some hard shots to Williams head. Williams took control the 2nd rd. while Woienski won over the crowd with her toughness and heart. The 3rd round both ladies were landing some very hard shots but Williams experience prevailed.  Woienski never quit and finished the fight on her feet and had the fans on their feet as well. It took the judges awhile to gather up the scores. When the decision was finally announced Williams was the winner by split decision. Both ladies won in their own way. Woienski stepped into the ring for the first time against the best female fighter in the state and went the distance. Williams picked up another win and solidified her #1 ranking and became the Nor Cal UCA Champion.

Congratulations to James “Doin Damage” Davis, CDCR Folsom Prison, winning the UCA Light Heavyweight California State Title. The Sacramento Battle of the Badges put on a stacked 11 bout fight card leading up to the most anticipated 4 Round Title fight in California.

What a fight it was! Bustamante came into the house of #1 ranked James Davis to a crowd chanting “Beat LA, Beat LA” despite that Bustamante was focused and ready for the challenge. Although, he gave his best effort, Bustamante lost by unanimous decision after 4 hard fought rounds. Davis fought a perfect fight; he was never out of position, very sharp with his combinations, footwork and defense. Davis went into the ring with the intent of holding on to his #1 position with the UCA, he not only achieved that but is now the UCA Light Heavyweight Champion.

The UCA’s #1 ranked Light Heavyweight, James ‘Doin Damage” Davis did his last interview today with News 10 at Folsom Prison. Training is over, its fight time. James Davis only prediction, “There is going to be fireworks when we get in that ring.”

Juan Bustamante LAPD is doing everything he can to be 100% prepared for James Davis, CDCR.  Bustamante is sparring and training hard with top amateurs and pros.  Aside from training and sparring at his gym 818 Boxing, he is getting a lot of support from, LAPD partner, “Cage vs. Cons” Champion, Ishmael Gonzalez. Over the past 2 years Davis has also stepped into the ring with UCA top ranked fighters. Jerry Ribeira, Oakland PD, Marcus Cox, Alameda Co. S.D. and Sonny Gerber, Grover Beach PD. Other than losing by decision to Gerber, and a draw with Cox, Davis has beaten every cop who stepped into the ring with him.

There is nothing left to do, it’s fight time. One thing is for sure, when the winner is announced, the first UCA Light Heavyweight State Champion will be crowned.

A lot of pressure is being put on the Main Event fighters in the Sacramento Battle of the Badges Boxing Event. The Director of Corrections, Richard Subia has made a friendly wager with the LA Police Chief, Charles Beck for the upcoming UCA State Championship Title Fight. Juan “Bad Blood” Bustamante LAPD vs. James “Doin Damage” Davis, Correctional Officer, Folsom Prison. If Davis wins, LA Police Chief, Charles Beck must hang a San Francisco Giants banner in his office for one week. If Bustamante wins CDCR Director Mr. Subia must hang an LA Dodgers banner in his office for one week. Not only are these fighters feeling pressure from family, friends, and coworkers now they are getting it from the Director and the LA Chief of Police. That makes for a great fight.

California State Athletic Commission Scoring

If you’re a boxing fan, you know that judges can see a fight in many different ways. They use the same rules to decide the outcome of a match, but the scores can be greatly different. Here are some guidelines for you to score a bout and see how close you come to the judge’s decision.

Three judges score each bout on a 10-point must system. That means the winner of each round gets 10 points. The loser of the round gets 9 points or less. If you think the round is even, give both fighters 10 points. When there is a knockdown in the round, give the loser of the round 8 points; more than one knockdown and the loser gets 7 points. If a fighter gets knocked down three times in a round the fight is over. The referee can deduct a point or more, or even disqualify a fighter for rules violations such as low blows, holding, hitting on the break or hitting after the bell has been sounded.

Here are four things to look for in a fight.

  1. EFFECTIVE PUNCHES, Punches that land solidly and cleanly.
  2. EFFECTIVE AGGRESSIVENESS, This means being effective while also being aggressive; forcing the fight and landing punches.
  3. RING GENALSHIP, This is when the fighter takes control of the ring action.
  4. GOOD DEFENSE, This is when a fighter avoids punches while still keeping his hands ready offensively and counter punching.

Now you are ready to score a bout like a professional judge.

Big thanks to Vallejo Police Officer Darden for making this song, “It’s Time To Fight.” It’s the perfect song for the upcoming UCA Light Heavyweight Title Fight.   Look out for his next track, “Baddest Badge”

Two fighters from the LAPD Boxing team have big fights this month. March 16th Ivan Guillermo will be having his pro Debut. On March 31st Juan Bustamante will be fighting for the UCA Light Heavyweight State Title.

The LAPD Boxing Team is a close knit group. When one of their teammates is fighting the whole team turns their focus on that fighter. One thing about the LAPD Boxing team you have to admire is they are like a family. Not only are their teammates supporting them but the whole dept and in some cases a whole city gets behind them.

Juan Bustamante was raised in the city of Azusa. Once the city heard about Juan fighting for a title in Sacramento the Mayor Joe Rocha organized a press conference to show his support.

This is the kind of support all Public Safety officers should get.  A lot has to be said about these officers who have families, work 40 plus hours a week, put their lives on the line everyday and still want to give back by training and competing to raise money for charity boxing events.

Ivan Guillermo will be fighting on the ALL STAR Promotions Combat United Boxing MMA Card. Ivan is a Los Angeles Police Officer Hollenbeck Division. Ivan Guillermo has accomplished a lot as an amateur boxer. He has competed in the International Police and Fire Games winning a bronze medal. He is a Police Olympic Gold Medalist, Main Event fighter, and no one can forget his three epic battles with Jorge Caamal from LASD. Ivan is going to test the waters at the Professional level March 16th in Montebello at the Quiet Cannon. He will be facing Victor Valenzuela also in his Pro Debut. The fight will be 4 rounds in the Jr Middleweight division.
