2015 proved Public Safety boxing is hotter than ever and not just in California but all over the country. Battle of the Badges events are being held in Louisiana, Chicago, New York, Missouri, Texas, Puerto Rico, and the United Kingdom with record setting crowds. The Battle of the Badges is the biggest amateur event in the country and continues to grow at a rapid pace. Top level talent is emerging and fans have a lot to be excited about. Dream matchups like Brian Stevens, LASD vs Guillermo Garcia, LAPD, Dusty Rodriguez, Santa Monica FD vs Chris Martinez, Fresno PD and Brent Bugarin, Santa Clara SD vs Shant Sheklanian, Madera PD along with the California vs New York and California vs Louisiana are perfect examples of how far Public Safety boxing has evolved and the possibilities in years to come…

Travon-Taylor-2One on One with the UCA Light Heavyweight Champion Travon Taylor – Orange County Sheriff’s Department

It has been said once you become a champion you become a better fighter. Do you feel you are a better fighter physically or mentally now that you are a champion?

I definitely feel that I’m better mentally. I’m becoming a smarter fighter. I enjoy the mental aspect of boxing. I like the idea of outsmarting my opponent and controlling the fight from start to finish. My objective every time is to be the ring general. I want to be the puzzle that no one can solve. Cali King

Do you feel that you have to workout & train even harder now that you are the champion and everyone is gunning for you?

Yes I do but not necessarily because I have others gunning for me, but because I want to put on the best performance possible every time I step into the ring. I don’t train to win, I train to dominate.

If you could call anyone out to test your skills against who would it be?

Brian Stevens. The UCA Cruiserweight champion. I’d love the opportunity to rematch with him. He is a great fighter and champion and has been for a while.

In all of the divisions is there anyone you would not want to fight due to their style, power, height, or speed.

There is no one I’d duck or dodge. I’d take on anyone who feels they can take on the champ. That’s the true definition of a champion.

When will you be back in the ring?

Looking at early to mid 2016.

Too often in boxing, fights that the fans want to see get left unmade due to politics, money, or promoters. Over the past six years the UCA has made giant strides giving the fans and the fighters the matchups they want. As the 2016 boxing season approaches there appears to be an increasing possibility of some UCA dream fights coming to fruition. Here are a list of the ten biggest fights of 2016.

Frazier-ClearOne on One with the UCA Heavyweight Champion Mike Frazier – Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department

It has been said once you become a champion you become a better fighter. Do you feel you are a better fighter physically or mentally now that you are a champion?

Despite not training and fighting for some time now, I still feel I am much better fighter. For several years, I trained with some of the best fighters in law enforcement and have one of the best coaches (Retired Sgt. Mike Young)

Do you feel that you have to workout & train even harder now that you are the champion and everyone is gunning for you?FFL2011 (4)

This is a tough question. As it pertains to training, aside from spending time with my family and my demanding work schedule, I never had the opportunity to train as hard as I would like to. I usually train just enough to get the job done.

If you could call anyone out to test your skills against who would it be?

I would not call any fighters out, but if someone wanted a shot at beating the champ, it would be too hard to turn a fight down. Especially, if the fighter is an up and coming future or former UCA champ or on my department (LASD).

When will you be back in the ring?

That is only a question I could answer after I start training. Right now I am a bit rusty.

Oct 2015 19

There are many different trails and many different paths you can take to get to the top of a mountain. The sport of mixed martial arts is my mountain and I know I will climb this mountain. Every fighter has the same goal of reaching the gold up at the top. But I feel like I go about it different than most. Most fighters these days want to get to the big show by fighting bums and padding their record so that they look good on paper. Most fighters zig zag their way all the way up the mountain avoiding all other TOP LEVEL CONTENDERS. They wanna fight “tomato cans.” Everyone wants to be a champion but they want to win a belt by fighting nobodies and take the “safe route.” What’s the point of being a champion if you really haven’t fought the BEST? If you believe in your own greatness then screw everything else, screw zigzagging, screw taking the easy route. I don’t fear other fighters cause I truly BELIEVE that when I step into the cage I’m GOING TO WIN. If you have to zig zag then you know in your heart that you’re not the best. My mind is my strongest weapon and I have never doubted myself when it comes to fighting so I say screw it, I’m climbing this bitch and I’m gonna throw every contender off the mountain on my way up. – Kyle Stewart

brent bugarin new (293) (636x800)One on One with the UCA Welterweight Champion Brent Bugarin – Santa Clara Sheriff’s Department

It has been said once you become a champion you become a better fighter. Do you feel you are a better fighter physically or mentally now that you are a champion?

I believe that when you become a champion you do become a better fighter. In order to become a champion, not only do you have to learn more about the sport itself, but also more about who you are as an athlete– mentally, physical, spiritually. The lessons you learn and the sacrifices you have to endure throughout your road in becoming a champion is far greater than any other journey.

During this road in becoming a champion is where you are continuously learning. This process is what molds you as a fighter because you constantly build your repertoire. You fine tune your strengths, you learn new skills, you change your bad habits, and you improve your weaknesses. It is not always about the prize you get at the end of the road, but the experiences you learn throughout your journey to finally get there.

Do you feel that you have to workout & train even harder now that you are the champion and everyone is gunning for you?

Regardless of what anyone says, YES, you do have to work out and train harder now that you are a champion. Remember who you were BEFORE you became a champion? No one knew you or cared about you.  All you wanted to do was become that next champion, the guy on the poster, the guy who gets to fight the main event. So in order to be that guy, what did you have to do? Remember how that felt? Remember how hard you worked? How great did it feel to be named a champion?

For those champions, now you know how it feels to be a champion, but don’t forget all those other guys you DON’T know about or care about. Those guys are the ones that want to be the next champion, who want to be on the poster, who want to fight the main event– don’t forget that you used to be in their shoes; you were that guy. Just remember and understand that they are going through the same thing you put yourself through during your journey. The pressure is on the champion now not to lose because everyone wants to see the underdog succeed.

If you could call anyone out to test your skills against who would it be? Pro, UCA fighter or UCA champion

In the pros….. Mayweather. Not to test my skills, but to get PAID.

In the UCA, I would like to try out the 140 pound division. I felt more powerful and a lot faster as I began to lose weight during some previous training camps. I think the 140 pound division would be fun and interesting. I fought most of my previous fights between 143-145 pounds anyway, so losing a few more LBs wouldn’t hurt.

In all of thSAC BOTB 10 06 2012 4e divisions is there anyone you would not want to fight due to their style, power, height, speed, etc?

Master’s Division: UCA Hall of Famer Tom Gaffney. His smile is intimidating and infectious.

The former UCA Light Heavyweight: Matthew Wurdinger, Santa Clara Police Dept. He and I went to the same academy during the same time. During the academy, we had a use of force training day and boxing was implemented in it. The training officers put me up with him knowing how much amateur level boxing skills he already had and at the time, I had none. It was one minute on offense, one minute on defense, and one minute freestyle. Let’s just say, I learned a lot about boxing from Matthew during that experience.

When will you be back in the ring?

To be conitnued……………

It has been said once you become a champion you become a better fighter. Do you feel you are a better fighter physically or mentally now that you are a champion?

I believe in my abilities with or without a belt. There is certainly something to be said about the confidence having a title brings to a fighter. I try not to dwell on that however. I only focus on the fight and what needs to be done to win.

Do you feel that you have to workout & train even harder now that you are the champion and everyone is gunning for you?.

No. I don’t have to train any differently. I train extremely hard and always put in 100% in training camp. I do what is necessary. I don’t take short cuts and I take this sport very seriously. Anyone that doesn’t is a fool. You don’t play boxing. I am a confident person and a confident champion. This confidence is not derived from the belt around my waist but by the blood and sweat I leave in the ring during training camp. I train oFullSizeRender(12)ut of the Thrive training center in Fresno with renowned trainers Bryan Williams and Trinidad Valdez. I am very fortunate to have these men in my corner. Being in this gym I have access to top undefeated professional boxers who I look to for guidance in our chosen sport. I am also very thankful to Robert Minerva for all the help he gives me in preparing me for my fights and inspiring me to be my best. Without these men, I would not be the champion of my division. All three have taken me to the top and I know they are willing to make me do whatever is necessary to stay on top.

If you could call anyone out to test your skills against who would it be?

The person I want to fight in my next fight is the UCA # 1 ranked junior welterweight, Larry Cervantes, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept.

When will you be back in the ring?

God willing Larry and I can meet in the ring at the Central California Battle of the Badges in April 2016.

Chris Lewis-clear copyOne on One with the UCA Super Heavyweight Champion Chris Lewis – Fresno Sheriff’s Department

It has been said once you become a champion you become a better fighter. Do you feel you are a better fighter physically or mentally now that you are a champion?

I do not believe that being a champion has anything to do with me becoming a better fighter. A belt is just an award that shows as a fighter you have accomplished something in the PAST. The minute my last championship fight was over it was old news because someone else is coming for it and I have to be ready for the next challenge. It is what you do to earn that belt and what you do after you have attained it that proves your metal as a competitor. I will say this though since I have become a champion I take my fights more personal. I put myself in a mindset that my opponent is trying to steal my wallet, I am offended and disgusted that someone would dare to try and strip me of it. It is my belt until I decide to relinquish it. If anything, I would say being a champion gives me more motivation. My trainers Pat Roberts, Jasper Tayaba, and Apolonio “T” Fernandez get all the credit for making me a better fighter physically and mentally. We have a road map of where we as a team are going, I absorb the lessons taught to me by my coaches so I can execute our plan. My trainers have put a lot of time and effort into molding me as a fighter. My coaches have a plethora of expertise when it comes to martial arts I just shut up and listen. Thus far everything they have coached me on has worked considering I have a 5-0 combined record in MMA, Muay Thai, and, Boxing. I feel it is disrespectful to my coaches for me to be lazy and not work hard when I step in the gym. The last thing I want to do is disappoint my coaches with bad performances or them having to pick me up off of the ground because I didn’t follow instructions. Pat makes it very clear that when we show up somewhere we have fun but above all we are there to Win!

Do you feel that you have to workout & train even harder now that you are the champion and everyone is gunning for you?

My parents James and Karen Lewis instilled work ethic in me. They made sure I knew that I had to work for everything I wanted and nothing good comes easy. I train 7 days a week. I usually hit the weights 3 days a week with my Girlfriend, “Swolemate”, and Chef Paula Gonzales. She pushes me in the gym and makes sure I am eating right year round to fuel me for my work schedule, workouts, and fights. My brother Donavon Lewis also hits the weights with me sometimes but he motivates me to work hard because if I lose he is going to let me know about it! I think the biggest reason I work hard is because   I’m not training for the guys gunning for me. I am training for the guys that I am gunning for. I have high aspirations for what I want to accomplish in the ring and cage. I do want to fight professionally and in those levels there are some real killers, I am training to face those guys and see if I can hold my own against them. Luckily for me I am not even the best fighter in my gym which is Buhawe Fighting Alliance. Jasper has a cult following when it comes to training fighters. If he says it you do it! It is that simple. He has trained every high level guy at AKA San Jose and If you go there you will see a huge picture of him on the wall in the main training room. Jasper and Ming Vang push my stablemates and I hard in the gym. I get to spar with Nathan Roberts, Jermaine McDermott, Granson Clark, Brandon “Money” Cash, John “The Icon” Elias, Mike “ El Palo Duro” Moreno, Lavar “Big” Johnson, Andrew Nguyen, Gerardo Serrano, Jesse “The Outlaw” James, Steven Bolinger, Thomas Dozier, Long Vang, Clifford Passmore, Murphy Sean, Marc Julian, Sandy Serrano, Alyssa why, Melisa Reyna, Natasha Galarza, Day Day Davis, and Jane Banks on a weekly basis. Not to mention I go to Thrive Training Center and work with some very talented boxers and coaches there. I go to Dethrone base camp and get work in with those guys some time as well. I have even been to AKA San Jose and sparred with Cain Velasquez. I am blessed with the amount of knowledge passed on to me by my coaches. I am blessed with the quality of fighters I get to spar with in my gym.

If you could call anyone out to test your skills against who would it be?

The UCA fighters I have already “called out” and tried to set up fights with were Bryan Williams, Mike Carnell, and Mike Gomez.  I wanted to have a match with Bryan Williams because he is THE heavyweight boxer in the Central Valley. Every time the subject of the heavyweight boxing scene is brought up, the first thing out of people’s mouths is “Do you know Bryan Williams?” I feel like when heavyweights in California are brought up I should be included in the conversation. I felt Bryan needed to pass the torch and the only way to make that happen was to have a bout with him. That being said Bryan has also helped me prepare for previous fights and has got me good sparring partners, he is an excellent coach. Coach B has also made it very clear that he will help me any way he can so I definitely appreciate that. I honestly can’t say enough about the kind of guy he is. I just thought it would be fun to get in there and mix it up with the UCA Masters Heavyweight Champ. I love and respect Coach B.

I wanted to have a match with Mike Carnell because we went to the same high school. I am a bit younger than him and I am actually pretty close to his twin younger brothers. For a long time there has been an ongoing debate at our barbershop about who would win in a boxing match and neither one of us is going to say another man is better without actually fighting.  Mike can’t fight for the UCA belt because he is not law enforcement even though he has fought in a few public safety events. Instead of an actual fight I visited his gym and got some good sparring with him recently. We got good work in and we both learned from the session. Mike is a great boxer but his passion is actually coaching. He is currently learning the ins and outs of coaching by assisting Coach B with his fighters. Mike has offered to assist me with training and he will spar with me whenever I need to get some rounds in. That goes to show what kind of guy he is. I have known Mike for a long time and thought it would be fun for all the mutual people we know to watch us in match. I appreciate Mike’s help and the coaching points he has given me.

The only real “Caphoto(30)ll Out” I have on this list is Mike Gomez. I was supposed to fight Mike Gomez for the title last October. A week before the fight I was hearing things from very good sources that he was bragging about sparring Ten 3 minute rounds and he was ready to go. Then 3 days before the fight he backed out because he had high blood pressure (because he was scared). I’m 260 pounds my blood pressure is high sometimes too. Especially considering Mike and I are both Correctional Officers, high blood pressure is part of the job. If it was me in that situation I would have told the Dr. to let me relax for a few minutes and recheck my blood pressure especially if I was able to spar Ten 3 minute rounds a few days prior. I wound up fighting Zeke Johnston after he only had 48 hour notice. Zeke wasn’t training and he definitely was not in a fight camp like Mike Gomez and I were supposed to be. Zeke is a hell of a guy and a hell of a fighter I appreciate him stepping in and he came to fight. The reason Mike Gomez is getting called out is when I watched Zeke and I fight on Zeke’s YouTube channel ZEKEFTBLL at 6:45 Mike called me a name. The video is titled Round 3 Johnston vs. Lewis if anyone is interested. I want him to prove that what he said about me is true. Supposedly, he is a black belt in Tae Bo or something like that. If he ever decides to step in the ring or cage with me I am going to make that belt change colors real quick.

In all of the divisions is there anyone you would not want to fight due to their style, power, height, speed, etc?

Yeah I will not mess with Shant Sheklanian and DJ Vargas alone. Shant is too fast, very technical, and he’s mean. Shant has no qualms about trying to take your head off. DJ’s foot work is ridiculous and he makes guys look stupid. The first time I saw DJ fight I thought I was watching Manny Pacquiao or Yuriorkis Gamboa. As far as the bigger guys in the UCA like the light heavy or heavy weight champ they should come up and can unify all the belts. Id cut down a bit to 245 to make it happen, Even though it’s just boxing and we do wear head gear. The 130 pound guys at my gym spar me all the time as well as the female fighters. Just saying

When will you be back in the ring?

Since the Hanford Battle of the Badges in April I have been busy. I was supposed to fight in June but that opponent has the Mike Gomez syndrome (he no showed). I fought for the 559 Fights MMA promotion in July; I won via first round submission. I am currently entered to fight in the 559 fights/CAMO heavyweight state tournament.  The tournament is 3 rounds, if I win my fight I advance to the next event.  My first fight in the tournament will take place Oct 11th at the Fresno fair. The second fight will be Nov 6th at the Visalia Holiday Inn. The championship fight will be Dec 19th at the Fresno Tower Theater. After December my Coaches Jasper or T will set something up for me. I’ll fight in the Hanford Battle of the Badges in April where I will prove once again that I am the Baddest Law enforcement Officer in the Nation in the square circle! Then maybe a Pro Debut who knows?

Brian Stevens (1)

One on One with the UCA Cruiserweight Champion Brian Stevens – Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department

It has been said once you become a champion you become a better fighter. Do you feel you are a better fighter physically or mentally now that you are a champion?

Becoming a champion definitely gave me confidence, which I think is very important in boxing. It gave me the validation I needed that I could compete with anyone. There is so much doubt that goes through your head before a fight, it can cause guys to lose a fight in the locker room. I know that I am the champion, and whoever is standing across from me knows it too. There is a reason why I am a champion, because I put in the blood and sweat that it takes to win, because I have a world class trainer, and because I have champion sparring partners. It gives me the validation to keep pushing when I’m tired and hurt, because I know that it works. The belt is proof.

Do you feel that you have to workout & train even harder now that you are the champion and everyone is gunning for you?

Every fight for me is a championship fight. There are no easy fights. I fight the number one contender and they want to know what it feels like to hold the belt. I can not let them want it more than me. Imagining someone training harder than me keeps me up at night. It makes me push, and make sure every day I work harder than whoever that person is.

If you could call anyone out to test your skills against who would it be?

Guillermo Garcia, LAPD He has been calling me out for a while now, he’s the number one contender, and he’s gonna get what he’s asking for. I think he has a style similar to mine, except he is a southpaw, so I think it will make for an exciting action packed fight. Anytime you have LASD vs. LAPD there is a rivalry, but I also fought his trainer John Negrete, LAPD which I’m sure adds a little extra motivation in his corner.

In all of the divisions is there anyone you would not want to fight due to their style, power, height, speed, etc?

That would have to be the super cruiserweight champ Alan Rojas. He is strong, fast, and has the best trainer.

When will you be back in the ring?

Hopefully soon, I am working on the details with my trainer now.

GIRL-BANNER-BLACK-1_edited-In a male dominated sport female fighters can often be overlooked. Here are some of public safety’s finest that will not allow that to happen. These women have shown courage, determination, boxing skills and have gone toe to toe and proven themselves to be warriors. Female fighters only know one way to fight and that is give it 100% from start to finish. When women fight on the card you can guarantee they will be in the running for “Fight of the Night” honors. These women have raised the bar and broke new ground for boxing.

FullSizeRenderThe SoCal Battle of the Badges delivered another great night of Public Safety boxing action Saturday night at Agua Caliente Resort and Casino. The main attraction was the UCA Light Heavyweight Champion Travon Taylor, Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. defending his title against up and coming Jose Carrillo Fausto’s Bail Bonds. This fight would go the distance and Carrillo would have his moments but Taylor was technically superior in every aspect of the fight. He was nearly untouchable. Taylor is dedicated to his craft and it shows with each performance. Can anyone stop him? With the win Taylor becomes the reigning and defending UCA Light Heavyweight State Champion.

uca belts-6191Everyone with the fortitude to lace up gloves and enter the ring to compete has within themselves the potential to become a champion. The difference between those that achieve their goals and those that fall short is the willingness to expose oneself to an extreme amount of demands, usually in the form of punishment in the gym. This is where the fight is won. The physical, emotional and mental groundwork for success is a time tested formula in which shortcuts have no place. Being determined and accountable to yourself and your team are the prerequisites to taking that walk to the ring with a head held high and a chest full of confidence. When you step through those ropes, you know in your heart if you did what is necessary to put out, to give the best of yourself, to leave it all in the ring. Champions are not made by accident. Champions don’t just show up on fight night. Champions are fight night. Not everyone has what it takes to be a UCA champion. Do you?

DSC_8399The 11th annual Louisiana Battle of the Badges took place Saturday night at the Fant Ewing Coliseum University of Louisiana. Nearly six thousand fans packed into the coliseum to witness one of the best action packed cards of the year. The best fighters from California Texas, Kansas and Louisiana laid it all on the line for charity. Jorge Caamal, John Henderson and Chris Martinez represented California. First to enter the ring from CA was the former #1 ranked title challenger Jorge Caamal, LASD who squared off with a less experienced but very game opponent in Rodney Moore, West Monroe Fire Dept. Caamal would land some heavy leather throughout the fight but Moore kept coming, firing combinations of his own.  This fight was a battle of attrition with neither fighter backing down. In the end the judges would give the decision to the hometown fighter, DSC_8405Rodney Moore. Next up was 6th ranked John Henderson, Hanford PD taking on Austin Tull, Shreveport Fire Dept. this was another competitive fight between two warriors. Tull had a slight experience and height advantage. Tull would do a job of using his footwork and reach to keep Henderson at the end of his punches and to stay out of danger. Henderson would close the distance and land some hard shots but it wasn’t enough. After 3 hard fought rounds, Tull would pick up the win. The co main event featured the interim UCA Jr Middleweight Champion Chris Martinez, Fresno Police Dept. vs UCA Golden Fists award winner Steven Lee, Sedgwick Sheriff’s Dept. As soon as the bell rang Martinez and Lee met in the center of the ring looking to engage. Lee gave up 9 pounds for the opportunity to
fight Martinez andDSC_8413 it proved to be a big disadvantage. Martinez was clearly the stronger fighter and Lee would learn early he packed a punch. Martinez hurt Lee in the first round and went in for the kill. Lee showcased his warrior spirit never giving up and answering back. This fight would go the distance and in the end it was the power shots that sealed the win for Martinez. With the win, Martinez retains his UCA Jr Middleweight title and picks up the Louisiana Battle of the Badges belt.

11154650_368167170048171_8572570993850759384_oOn August 15, 2015 the UCA Jr Middleweight Interim Champion Chris Martinez, Fresno Police Dept will square off will Steven Lee, Sedgwick Sheriff’s Dept. in the Louisiana Battle of the Badges. The UCA caught up with the Champion to ask him a few questions about his upcoming fight with Lee.

UCA – What gym do you train at and who is your coach?

CM – I’ve been training with Coach Jr Palafox at the Palafox boxing gym in Lemoore, Ca.

UCA – Who are some of the people you are sparring or training with to prepare for the fight?

CM – My current sparring and training partners include Top Rank fighter Daniel Valdivia, Pro fighter Irvin Garcia, Mario Martinez, Arturo Cervantes, and 9 ranked Devon Dejoie, NAVY.

UCA – Has your training and preparation for this fight been any different from your previous fights?

CM – Not really.

UCA – Are you doing any crazy or unique workouts to prepare for the fight?

CM – Nothing I haven’t done in the past.

UCA – Once you found out you were fighting Lee did you watch his fight against Zachary Farris, CHP?

CM – I saw his fight a couple of times. But I’m more focused on what I need to do for this fight. Styles make fights and I don’t fight like his last opponent.

UCA – With your style and Lee’s style this fight can only go one way and that is straight ahead full speed, nonstop fireworks from start to finish. How do you see the fight going?

CM – I think this fight is going to be tough. Lee has heart and so do I, so we will see who wants it more when we step in the ring.

UCA – Are you feeling added pressure or stress about traveling to Louisiana to fight?

CM – It’s exciting and a honor to go and fight somewhere I’ve never been. I just see it as another Journey in my fight experience.

UCA – Neither one of you are from Louisiana, Lee is from Kansas and you are from California. Do you feel the scoring will be fair?

CM – This is something I’ve been anticipating and I hope the judges play fair. In the ring you have to win the judges, win the crowd and hold your ground. I plan to do all three

UCA – What made you want to take this fight?

CM – It’s a great opportunity to travel and do something I love, while at the same time benefit a great cause.

UCA – How has the process been preparing for this fight with work, family and training fitting into your schedule?

CM – It’s been tough finding time to train. In our line of work you have to make time when it’s available and find a good balance between all things. Overall, it’s gotta be God, family then boxing, in that order.

UCA – Are you working on anything specific for Lee?

CM – I just know that he’s a southpaw, that’s probably the only thing I keyed up on. But I’ve sparred with DJ Vargas, who’s a fast and talented southpaw.

UCA – If you feel the fight is close going into the 3rd round will you come out hard looking to push the pace and land something hard to win the round?

CM – Absolutely, hopefully it doesn’t get to that point.

UCA – Do you feel the Louisiana humidity and heat will have an effect on your performance Saturday night?

CM – I’m not sure. Fresno and Hanford are hot and humid, plus I train without AC to make my workouts tougher.

UCA – You leave for Louisiana on Thursday and fight on Saturday. Will you try to get in a light workout before the fight to get acclimated to the humidity and heat or will you just rest?

CM – Nothing extreme. Light jog, shadow boxing but that’s about it.

UCA – Have you envisioned in your mind how the fight ends? How?

CM – I picture myself finishing the fight just as strong as the 1st and 2nd round. Then the referee will raise my hand and I’ll be victorious.

Aug 2015 08

FullSizeRender(1)On August 15, 2015 the UCA Golden Fists award winner Steven Lee, Sedgwick Sheriff’s Dept. will square off with the interim UCA Jr Middleweight Champion Chris Martinez, Fresno Police Dept. in the Louisiana Battle of the Badges. The UCA caught up with Lee to ask him a few questions about his upcoming fight with Martinez.

UCA – What gym do you train at and who is your coach?

SL – I train at Northside Boxing 316 and my coach is one of the best. Coach  Lewis Hernandez  However I have taken a different approach this time. My coach for this fight is my cousin Justin Mason.

UCA – How has the process been preparing for this fight with work, family and training fitting into your schedule?

SL – My schedule is pretty much set, luckily my other half works full time and goes to nursing school full time so we are both busy people. When she’s at school I’m at the gym. My son hangs out with his nieces and nephews or he stays with me.

UCA – Who are some of the people you are sparring or training with to prepare for the fight?

SL – Justin Mason of Griffey Muay Thai, Some people from my gym, very decorated fighters. I took a different approach of training for this one.

UCA – Will your training and preparation for this fight been any different from your previous fights?

SL – It’s very different this time, I have trained for this fight mostly at my own home in my gym in the garage. Except for sparring with others then I go somewhere.

UCA – Are you doing any crazy or unique workouts to prepare for the fight?

SL – Not exactly no, I do feel my work outs that my coach has taught me the last couple years are as crazy as a work out I can get without falling out. Every time I’m done I throw my hands up in the air because I’m so happy it’s over. My coach is a machine I swear.

UCA – What made you want to take this fight?

SL – 3 reasons, My son and other half are coming with me, Med camps charity, last one….I just love punching people with style 🙂

UCA – Styles make fights and with your style and Martinez style this fight can only go one way and that is straight ahead full speed, nonstop fireworks from start to finish. Do you expect a 3 round war with Martinez?

SL – I am not sure on this one, We both in our head say I am gonna knock him out. However once you start getting after it things change sometimes. The guy might be tougher then you think and things aren’t as easy as you thought they were gonna be.  Either way we are going to war on Aug 15th and I will try my best to stop the fight early.

UCA – Are you a guy that studies your opponents fights?

SL – Yes I do, I have watched everything I can on this man.

UCA – Do you feel by watching fight video you can pick things up that can help you win the fight?

SL – I do feel that I have picked up some mistakes that he makes while he is fighting. Not necessarily mistakes but things he will pay for if he does them on me. 🙂  I will say this, I’m staying away from this guys straight right hand. Its a wrecking ball.

UCA – Are you working on anything specific for Martinez?

SL – I am, I can’t share though because then he would know what’s coming when he makes one certain movement with his head and get’s in a danger zone. I don’t want him knowing where that zone is at. lol

UCA – If you feel the fight is close going into the 3rd round will you come out hard looking to push the pace and land something hard to win the round?

SL – I am doing that every round no matter what. This guy hits harder then a bull that’s been caged for 10 years. That means I will try to finish the fight if I can because honestly I do not want to be punched in the face by this man. It’s gonna hurt haha.

UCA – Do you feel you will have to put on the best performance of your career to beat Martinez?

SL – I truly do feel that I will on Aug 15th, That is the only way I will win this fight and that’s what I’m coming to do.

UCA – Do you feel the Louisiana humidity and heat will have an effect on your performance Saturday night?

SL – Naaa, I live in Kansas and the humidity here sucks, It’s like walking into a sauna every day you go outside.

UCA – Will you try to get in a light workout before the fight or will you just rest?

SL – Friday I will yes, either after weigh ins or before. Then Saturday I will go for a run in the morning and hang out with family until my fight.

UCA – What will you be thinking as you walk to the ring?

SL – I will be thinking that it’s great that so many people showed up to support a great cause, and that my son is watching and I refuse to lose in front of him.

UCA – Have you envisioned in your mind how the fight ends?

SL – I really haven’t, all I know is we both want this. If we both stay up all three rounds then either way win or lose it will be the best fight of the night and that’s what people remember. I can promise that. However I refuse to lose in front of my son.:)

Champions have something inside them that can’t be explained. Their commitment resolve, courage, determination, and will to win is unmeasurable. TDSC_2257 (800x618)wo UCA State Champions were crowned Friday night at the Battle of the Badges in Montebello CA. The first title fight of the night featured #1 ranked Travon Taylor, Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. vs. Joshua Mejia, (8-1) Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept. for the UCA Light Heavyweight State Championship. When the bell sounded Taylor and Mejia showed each other a lot of well-deserved respect.  They moved around the ring studying each other while displaying good footwork and technical skills. The fight heated up in the 2nd and 3rd rounds with Mejia pressing the action and landing some solid shots.  Taylor made the necessary adjustments to stay out of danger and put on a superb display of intelligent boxing. This was a high skill level fight between two of the best fighters in the division.  In the end it was Taylor’s superior boxing skills and punch output that made the difference. When the score cards were added up and the fighters were called to the center of the ring, the decision was announced. And the new…UCA Light Heavyweight Champion Travon Taylor, Orange County Sheriff’s Dept.

The Main event of tDSC_2275 (800x457)he night featured an unknown, undefeated fighter; name Enrique Frias, San Diego Probation who looked to shock the public safety boxing world by defeating the undefeated #1 ranked Alan Rojas, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept. When the bell sounded Rojas and Frias were ready to mix it up. This was an all action technical slugfest. Both fighters showed heart and a tremendous chin. Throughout the fight both fighters continued to impose their will and skill on one another. They were landing some heavy blows but neither fighter would back down.  Rojas and Frias were firing off shots until the final bell sounded. This was a championship level performance by two true warriors. But there could only be one winner. Fighting out of the red corner, and the new….UCA Super Cruiserweight Champion Alan Rojas, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept.

These two title fights have rematch written all over them and possibly the makings of a Gatti vs Ward type of trilogy. Mejia was Taylor’s toughest challenge at 175lbs and Rojas admitted to Frias he was his toughest opponent.

undercardThe undercard started off with a pair of middleweights, 6th ranked David Chung, LASD vs Brian Hoist, LASD. Hoist, was making his ring debut against veteran fighter Chung, who holds a record of (3-2). Hoist wasn’t affected by Chung’s experience, the crowd or the lights. Hoist was ready to fight and when the bell rang he pursued and pressured Chung for 3 rounds. Hoist pitched a near shutout in his battle of the badges debut, defeating Chung, by majority decision. Hoist is a young athletic fighter and someone to keep an eye on.

Bout 2 featured 3rd ranked Remin Pineda, LASD vs 9th ranked Brian Petrella, Pasadena Police Dept. Petrella was looking to rebound from a 3 round decision loss to 5th ranked Jesse Zaranaga, LASD. This was a close fight between two evenly matched fighters but in the end Petrella would come up short losing by decision. Pineda sealed the win by having the higher punch connect percentage and being the busier fighter.  Pineda continues to improve and picks up his 2nd win in a row.

DSC_2148 (800x584)The crowd was treated to a great battle between two warriors when 10th ranked Hector Mendoza, LAPD and newcomer Che Parker, LASD stepped into the ring. No feeling out needed for this one. These fighters had one job to do, and that was fight! When the bell rang Parker came right after Mendoza not giving him an inch to breathe.  Mendoza used his experience to find openings to land beautiful body shots and combinations. Mendoza was the more polished fighter due to his experience but Parker would hold his own and land some solid shots. Mendoza and Parker traded blow for blow and after 3 hard fought rounds Mendoza would be announced the winner. These fighters laid it all on the line and were rewarded with “Fight of the Night” honors.

Bout 4 featured the much anticipated rematch between Gerardo Pachuca, LASD and Jake Ching, LA Co. FD. These fighters know each other well so no introduction was needed. When the bell rang Pachuca and Ching went to work throwing punches in bunches. When Pachuca got hit he came right back and hit Ching even harder. This went on for three rounds. Pachuca and Ching were made for each other. Whenever these guys get in the ring the fans are guaranteed an all action fight. When the final bell sounded the crowd was on their feet cheering for both fighters. Pachuca and Ching displayed great sportsmanship, heart, strength, skill, and character. When the score cards were added up Ching would once again be announced the winner.

The only female bout of the night featured first timer Kendra Hendricks, LASD taking on the highly favored 5th ranked Isabel Sandoval, LASD. Hendricks is the female version of 2nd ranked Brandon Manning, LASD. Hendricks has the same aggressive, attacking, brawling style as Manning.  She charges forward and smothers her opponents with a barrage of punches.  Hendricks was clearly the stronger fighter and imposed her strength and will on Sandoval to grind out a decision win.  Hendricks would pick up her first win and start her climb to the top of the division.

The Main Event of Saturday night’s Battle of the Badges at the Hanford Civic Auditorium featured the best Super Heavyweights in California. #1 ranked Pierce Masse – Fresno PD vs the Champion Chris Lewis – Fresno SD for the UCA Super Heavyweight  Championship. The small ring used for this night’s event would be made to look even smaller when these two large men stepped into it. The challenger, Pierce Masse calmly made his way to the ring with a focused look on his face. Johnny Cash’s, “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” played slow and steady in the background. The champion, Chris Lewis, would come in pumped up and energetic; bouncing and bobbing his head to a track rapped by Drake. At the bell, these two big men sized up one another as they circled the ring. Both of them planning on just how they would open up their attacks. Then all of a sudden, the battle broke out. A jabbing Lewis landed a thunderous right hand that let off a loud boom heard all through the venue.  Masse took it well, but would be sent back to the ropes as the champ charged at him. Caught in a tangle, both fighters tussled as they leaned on the ropes. The ring seemed about to give in and collapse where their combined weight would press. But just then, the champ would get back his distance; he jabbed his way outside and fought off his back foot. The ex-star football player was athletic and quite nimble for such a big man. He would let Masse make his way into range and catch him on the head and body with powerful right hands and left hooks. Masse would shake off the punches and keep coming forward. Masse would then utilize his advantage in reach and land his long left jab and right cross from the outside. To negate Pierce’s superior reach, Chris changed up his positioning and ripped uppercuts and left hooks to Masse’s body and head on the inside. But Pierce would press on. Then the champ would change it up again, and get back to the outside. He worked some flashy, quick feet as he circled away from the challenger’s reach. Lewis was elusive and avoided a scary, huge right hand from Masse to close out the 2nd. Well behind on the scorecards, the challenger Masse, had no choice but to keep coming forward and forcing the action. He caught up to the champion with his longer arms and landed some big 1, 2’s from outside. Those punches were not only heard, but could somehow also be felt by the spectating crowd who was cringing. He then closed the distance, forcing Lewis into the corner. The ring and ropes rattled. Both fighters would push and exchange punches in close proximity. Neither man going backward. In the closing seconds, both fighters hurled bombs at one another, and went at it full tilt. Masse showed off his own power and finished strong, but it was too late. The final bell sounded. And still UCA Super Heavyweight Champion Chris Lewis – Fresno SD.

With the success over the past two years, the UCA is proud to announce they will be returning to the Hanford Auditorium for another four years, with the next event April 9, 2016.

Apr 2015 16

The co main event featured the decorated UCA Middleweight Champion DJ Vargas, Avenal PD against #1 ranked Quincy Mirage, LAPD, the unheralded challenger who is hungry and in pursuit of a performance that will recognize him as the best. Mirage has methodically moved up in competition to claim the #1 spot and earn his shot at title. Vargas has had a target on his back since winning the title last year and ready to protect his title against all challengers.  Mirage had a game plan and when the bell sounded he went to work on it. He brought the fight to the Champion in a big way; he pursued and pressured Vargas around the ring and would not let him breathe. Vargas would fight back with counter-punching, elusiveness and fancy footwork.  Mirage pushed the pace and kept up his attack for 6 minutes. When the final bell sounded it was clear Mirage was the aggressor and brought the fight to the champion. Was it enough?  When the scorecards were collected Vargas would be announced the winner. With the win Vargas validates himself as the reigning, and defending UCA Middleweight Champion.

Apr 2015 15

The 9th bout of the night featured the undefeated 2nd ranked Shant Sheklanian – Madera PD vs the UCA Champion Francisco Flores – Stanislaus SD for the UCA Jr Welterweight Title. Both fighters would come out slow to begin this one. The mutual respect shown by each boxer was obvious. Both men very aware of the power the other possessed. They were judicious with their punches in the beginning. But it didn’t take long for the action to start. Shant Sheklanian, the boxer-puncher, landed hard, crisp 1, 2, 3 combos to the head & body of the forward-fighting Francisco Flores. His strikes would let off a loud thud that could be heard throughout the auditorium. Flores would take these punches in stride and avoid some of the others with side to side head movement. Flores would land a big right hand of his own. He tried to keep Sheklanian on the ropes to keep on landing his bombs, but Shant would simply spin out of them. The challenger caught the champ with well-timed 1, 2’s and hard counter hooks that would put the average fighter to sleep. But Flores just kept on stalking him. The champ’s chin was resilient. Feeling the fight and the title slipping away from him, the champ came back in the 3rd and fought back with ferocity. His champion’s mettle and will was apparent. He traded punches with Sheklanian in the center ring and landed some big combos and hooks of his own.  But so did Sheklanian. Francisco would still keep the pressure on. But Shant, well ahead on the scorecards, would finish by sticking and moving his way to a win. When the decision was announced, both fighters embraced one another with great, mutual respect. Sheklanian was as gracious in victory as Flores was in defeat. And the New UCA Junior Welterweight Champion is Shant Sheklanian.

Apr 2015 14

The 8th bout of the night featured two of the best Jr Middleweights competing for the Interim UCA Junior Middleweight Championship title, Eddie Montano- LAPD vs Chris Martinez – Fresno PD. When the bell sounded Martinez came out of his corner moving well around the ring. His footwork was quick and effective. He opened up with a jumping left hook reminiscent of Roy Jones Jr., catching Montano as he made his way in. Montano continued to stalk Martinez behind a jab and straight right. But Martinez would use the whole ring; and used it well to keep himself out of danger’s reach. He countered Montano as he came into range, peppering him with quick, clean combinations up top and down low. Montano would use a high-glove turtle shell guard and would defend himself well, but many of Martinez’ punches still found their mark. Montano would land a big right hand of his own, and did well when he was able to keep Martinez on the ropes. But it was easier said than done. Besides using his legs very well, Martinez would also employ effective upper body and head movement to remain elusive from Montano. He kept his distance well in the center of the ring. He flurried and stopped his opponent in his tracks, and would not let him reset to throw his punches. What a masterful display of boxing by Martinez. Well behind on the scorecards in the last episode, Montano would keep stalking Martinez, hoping to land his killer overhand right that would more than even things up. He kept trying to get Martinez up against the ropes so he can work in his other big punches. But Martinez had other plans. He fought himself off of the ropes and recaptured his distance. He stayed out of reach of the mauling Montano, and skated his way to a well-earned victory. And the New Interim UCA Jr Middleweight Champion is Chris Martinez -Fresno PD. This sets up a fantasy blockbuster match-up between two champions. Dusty Rodriguez, Santa Monica FD vs Chris Martinez, Fresno PD.

Apr 2015 13

The 6th bout of the night featured the most anticipated fight of the night. The return of Bryan Williams, Fresno PD taking on the best fighter from Louisiana James Moore, Monroe Fire Dept for the UCA Masters Heavyweight Championship Title.  When the bell sounded Moore would get off to a blazing start throwing really big bombs at Williams’ body and head, mauling him up against the ropes. His strength and power were evident. But Williams fought well off the ropes. He had great success popping a piston-like jab and speedy right hands that slowed Moore’s momentum. The crowd cheered him on. Moore continued to stalk the boxing Bryan Williams. He led off with a stiff, long jab that jarred Williams back. He landed a big uppercut that kept Williams on the defensive. An elusive Williams would employ the famous Philly Shell defense and displayed flashy footwork to avoid Moore’s attack. But Moore’s long double-jab and bruising right hand would reach a retreating Williams to close out the second stanza. Very competitive fight going into the 3rd and final round. The 3rd round would start out a chess match with both men circling the ring. Even the heavy handed Moore would flash some footwork of his own. But the chess game quickly turned into Checkers. Both men would fire sizzling combinations at each other. They fought tit for tat. Moore would maul Williams and Williams would pepper Moore from off of the ropes. Moore would have more success when he would lead with his spear of a jab, but was more intent on brawling it out on the inside. And to the crowd’s delight, that’s how the fight ended. This was a war between two modern day gladiators. And what a war it was! What a tough one to score! When the scores were tallied up Williams would be announced the winner and the new Masters UCA Heavyweight Champion.

The UCA Central California Battle of the Badges returned to the Hanford Civic Auditorium on Saturday April 11, 2015 with 11 epic fights that produced a great night of Public Safety boxing entertainment. The sold out audience was treated to an explosive night of boxing featuring top flight fighters from California, Louisiana and Kansas. 5 UCA Championship titles were up for grabs along with new fighters looking to get their names in Championship title shot conversations.

The show started off with a bang between two fighters who were anxious to get at each other. Brent Farris – Butte County Probation vs Arturo Cervantes – Palafox Gym. There was no feel-out period needed when the opening bell sounded. These two fighters came out swinging right out of the gate. After a few good exchanges, these two boxers would then settle into their respective game plans. Farris came forward behind a stiff jab and threw hard 1, 2 combinations. Cervantes showed good footwork and danced his way out of danger, jabbing and countering Farris with an overhand right as he came into range. Cervantes would then catch Farris flush with a straight right hand that would send him down to the canvas. Farris got up quickly and took the referee’s count up to 9. He shook off the knockdown and went back to work. The 1st round would then end with both combatants caught in a tangle after a furious flurry from both fighters. In the 2nd round it would be Cervantes who would press the action forward and went after Farris. He applied intelligent pressure, working his way in behind the jab. He worked Farris’ body, then caught him with two big overhand rights that would swell up his left eye and further bloody his nose. A standing 8-count would then be given to Farris. The ringside doctor would also be called in to examine the fighter. After a few words by the Doc, the ref, & team Farris, all parties came to an agreement; let the insistent & courageous Farris continue. With a brave warrior’s heart, the very tough Farris fought on and would finish the fight by landing some big right hand punches of his own. After the last bell, both fighters showed great sportsmanship & embraced one another. What a fight! What a way to open up this night’s event!  Cervantes winner by decision.

AJ Forestiere – Madera PD vs John Henderson – Hanford PD. Boxer vs Brawler making their Battle of the Badges debut. Henderson wasted no time and came out throwing wild and violent left, right hook combinations, catching Forestiere with very heavy leather. Forestiere would try to keep his distance, but had to fight hard to keep Henderson off of him. They would exchange some combinations in the center of the ring. But Forestiere had to box from the outside to stay away from Henderson’s relentless attack and clear advantage in power. Forestiere established his jab and right hand, but kept his left hand low. Henderson then closed the distance and caught Forestiere with a booming right hand that knocked him down to the ground. AJ was down but he was not out. He got up, dusted himself off, and finished the round. As the fight wore on, Henderson kept coming after Forestiere, throwing hard punches in bunches. He would maul Forestiere against the ropes and hit him with really strong shots upstairs and downstairs, imposing his tremendous will on him. Forestiere would find his distance back, and work his jab and right hand, but Henderson would walk right through them. Forestiere would then run out of room and be forced to fight Henderson in very close quarters. They fought toe to toe in the center of the ring, then Henderson caught Forestiere with another vicious head shot that sent him down to the canvas for the second time in the fight. But just as he did before, Forestiere got up again and fought back with everything he had until the fight ended. Wow! What a great fight! What a display of heart and will by both warriors! This turned out to be “The UCA Fight of The Night”, and deservedly so. Henderson winner by Decision.

Bout 4 Dania Lopez – Thrive Training Center vs Marlena Garcia – Tribal Public Safety. Lopez started the fight at a really fast pace. She was the shorter of the two fighters, but was able to get past Garcia’s longer reach by jabbing her way inside and following up with quick combinations. Garcia pawed out a probing jab and seemed to be trying to time Lopez with a power shot on her way in. But Lopez used effective footwork to get in and out of Garcia’s range. Lopez was the busier fighter of the two, landing accurate and well-timed 1, 2’s. She closed the distance well and was able to reach her taller opponent with regularity. She finished the 1st round with a flurry. Marlena abandoned the jab and came out brawling in the 2nd. Dania would then flash some fancy footwork and avoided most of Marlena’s power punches. But Lopez seemed intent on putting on a good show. She met Garcia halfway and mixed it up with her in the middle of the ring for a bit. Still not using her jab, Marlena opted to throw lead rights instead. Dania avoided those lead right hands and landed her counter left hooks. She closed in on Marlena and closed out the round with a 1, 2, 3 combo. At the start of the last round Garcia finally found her range. She was able to land her longer jab and right hands, and kept Lopez at the end of her punches. Lopez’ legs seemed to slow down a bit, but Dania was more than willing to stay in the pocket and trade with Marlena. While on the inside, both fighters would throw and land their fair share of hooks and uppercuts. The crowd would then “oooh” in excitement after some solid right hands found their mark for each lady. A loud applause from the crowd was heard at the time the fight ended. These two women kept the night’s action going and put on a great show! Lopez winner by decision.

Bout 7 featured a matchup between a fighter from California and a fighter from Kansas. Zach Farris -CHP made his Battle of the Badges debut against Steven Lee – Sedgwick SD. Farris flew out of the corner as soon as the bell rang and stormed right after the southpaw from Kansas, Steven Lee. There was no feel-out period for Farris. He threw and landed some stinging right hands that seemed to stun Lee. Fighting in the lefty stance, Lee used lateral movement to avoid some of Farris’ ferocious attack. He had some success timing Farris with a counter straight left and counter right hook as he charged his way in. But Farris would not be discouraged. He continued to make his way forward, throwing punches upstairs and chopping away at Lee’s body. But Lee would fight back and tried to slow Farris down. Farris kept up a fast pace and continued to maul Lee in an all-out brawl. He would land lots of leather. But Lee kept fighting back. He ripped Farris’ head and body with right and lefts. But Farris kept pushing forward. Neither warrior would back down. They fought in a phone booth for the last 10 seconds of the fight. They both showed tremendous courage & heart. Another close and amazing fight! Farris winner by decision.
