The Final Days

Posted In Blog

shay-mcintyre-folsom-prisoIt’s the final week of training camp. All the hard work is done. This week will be spent going over technique and strategy. Mental preparation will take up a lot of time reflecting on sparring sessions and the work done during training camp. A fighter should feel as though they are at their peak. They should feel physically, mentally, and emotionally strong. Most importantly a fighter should be confident that they have done everything they could have done to win.

Untitled-1To become a champion you must push farther than you think you can go. Every fighter will confront exhaustion at some point. You must be able to get past the pain, the discomfort and the urge to give up. A fighter must empty the tank every workout. Leave it all in the gym, on the track and in the weight room. When fight day comes and you are waiting for your name to be called isn’t the time to be wondering if you could have worked a little harder. It’s too late. When it’s time to step through the ropes you can have no doubts. It’s time to compete like a champion, saving absolutely nothing of yourself. All your energy, all your heart, all your soul, all your competitive fire needs to explode in that ring. If you can do that you will be a UCA champion.

On amedawarSaturday July 23, 2016 Agua Caliente Resort & Casino will host the SoCal Battle of the Badges. The event will be headlined by two of the best female fighters going toe to toe for the UCA Welterweight Championship title. The #1 ranked Jr Welterweight Asiah Medawar, San Bernardino Sheriff’s Dept. is moving up the 154lb Welterweight limit and #1 ranked, Jr Middleweight Kat Proudfoot, 29 Palms Fire Dept. is moving down a weight class to make this fight happen. The UCA caught up with Asiah Medawar to ask her a few questions about the upcoming fight.

UCA – How is training going?
AM – Training is going great! I have been pushing it day in and day out in the gym.

UCA – Has training for this fight been more intense compared to your other fights?
AM – Whenever I am preparing for a fight I always give everything I got because if for some reason I lose I don’t want the reason to be because I didn’t put in the work.

UCA – Who is your coach and what gym are you training at to prepare for the fight.
AM – My main Coach is Robert Espinosa and he is out of the Victorville Police and Fire League. I also train with Danny Garcia out of Millennia MMA

UCA – Are you sparring with men as well as women?
AM – Yes I spar with both men and women.

UCA – When sparring with the guys do they take it easy on you because you are a girl?
AM – It depends on the guy if he is a lot bigger than me then he will hold off on power shots but if not it’s a normal sparring session.

UCA – If you had to pick one fighter whose style most resembles your style who would it be?
AM – That’s a hard question to answer I think every fighter has their own style in fighting.

UCA – What do you feel your strongest weapon in the ring is?
AM – I think my power, cardio, and my determination is my biggest weapon.

UCA – Are you working on anything specific in training camp to prepare for your fight with Proudfoot?
AM – That is something we will have to wait and see when we fight on July 23rd.

UCA – Do you feel you will have to put on the best performance of your career to win the title?
AM – Yes I do. It’s not going to be an easy fight, she is a good fighter but I’m going to get in there and give it all I got.

UCA – If the fight is close going into the 3rd round will you come out hard and push the pace to win the round?
AM – Always, without a doubt.

UCA – Are you nervous about fighting in the main event in front of nearly 2000 people?

UCA – What will you be thinking about as you walk to the ring?
AM – I will be thinking about my family and friends because their support and encouragement is why I’m where I’m at today.

Saturday July 23, 2016 Agua Caliente Resort & Casino will host the SoCal Battle of the Badges. The event will be headlined by two of the best female fighters going toe to toe for the UCA Welterweight Championship title. The #1 ranked Jr Welterweight Asiah Medawar, San Bernardino Sheriff’s Dept. is moving up the 154lb Welterweight limit. The #1 ranked, Jr Middleweight Kat Proudfoot, 29 Palms Fire Dept. is moving down to Welterweight to make this fight happen. The UCA caught up with Kat Proudfoot to ask her a few questions about the upcoming fight.

UCA – How is training going?
KP – I always think of Ali when someone asks this, particularly now as we are so recently mourning his death. “I hated every minute of training. But I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.” I find that to be so true when training for something in particular, rather than just the love of training.

UCA – Has training for this fight been more intense compared to your other fights?
KP – Emotionally, yes. My last MMA fight was a loss, and my most recent MMA fight my opponent fell out and I did not get to fight. I have the emotional intensity of three training camps combined.

UCA – Who is your coach and what gym are you training at to prepare for the fight?
KP- My coach is Mark Geletko, and I box out of Fight Club 29 in 29 palms CA.

UCA  – Are you sparring with men as well as women?
KP – I spar with more men than women, actually.

UCA – When sparring with the men do they take it easy on you because you are a woman?
KP – They wouldn’t dare.

UCA – If you had to pick one fighter whose style most resembles your style who would it be?
KP – Jeez, I’m not sure. I’m still developing my own style so I don’t really have an answer for that.

UCA – What do you feel your strongest weapon in the ring is?
KP – Tenacity. I’ve fought girls better than I, but I’ve always been meaner.

UCA – You have been busy in the ring and in the cage and you are coming off a big win over Jasmine Isiodoria, EMS January 30, 2016. Asiah Medawar last fight was May 17, 2014. Do you feel her long layoff gives you an advantage?
KP – No, I don’t actually. When you haven’t competed in a long time and you come back, you need it more. There’s a newly lit fire. I’m not taking her layoff as an advantage in the slightest.

UCA – If the fight is close going into the 3rd round will you come out hard and push the pace to win the round?
KP – I always do.

UCA – Are you nervous about fighting in the main event in front of nearly 2000 people?
KP – A fight is a fight, no matter who’s watching.

UCA – What will you be thinking about as you walk to the ring?
KP – “I hope the announcers cut this short so I can get to the face punching”

UCA – At the end of the fight will your name be announced as “And The New UCA Welterweight Champion”
KP – Yes

UCA Champions

Champion-Banner-4_edited-1

Becoming a Champion doesn’t happen by chance, it’s a choice, it isn’t easy, it requires a relentless pursuit. One characteristic that makes or breaks a fighter is not strength or skill, but staying power – the ability to stick it out long after the initial glamour has worn off and when things get tough. Champions know how to push through when others give up. The sacrifices are a part of your life, it’s what champions do. Champions know how to withstand the pain and agony a little bit more than everyone else.  Champions work for everything nothing is handed or given to them. They are the hardest workers. First one to the gym and the last one to leave. A champion is not afraid to fail big and dream big. The greatest moment lies at the end of your journey when all the hard work and sacrifices pay off and you are crowned a champion. Congratulations Quincy Mirage, Los Angeles Police Dept. Chuck Pfau, Sacramento Sheriff’s Dept. Sean Johnson, CDCR, Kern Valley State Prison, James Moore, Monroe Louisiana Fire Dept. Hector Mendoza, Los Angeles Police Dept.

UCA 1 (5) (800x679)Five UCA Champions were crowned Saturday night, April 9th at the Hanford Civic Auditorium. The first title fight of the night featured the Monroe Louisiana Fire Captain, James Moore vs Michael Banks, CDCR, CCC for the Masters UCA Heavyweight Championship Title. Last year Moore traveled to California to take on Bryan Williams, Fresno Police Dept. for the UCA Title and would lose a very close decision. Williams has since retired after 25 fights and over 20 years of competing. Moore knew the only way to take it out of the judge’s hands is by knockout, and that’s what he did. When the bell sounded both fighters came forward throwing leather. Moore struck first with a straight right hand that landed on the button. Banks would hit the canvas and make it back to his feet but the referee did not feel Banks could continue and ended the bout at 1:29 of the 1st rd. And the new…Masters UCA Heavyweight Champion… James Moore, Monroe Louisiana Fire Dept.

UCA 1 (11) (800x706)The second UCA Title fight of the night featured the #1 ranked Hector Mendoza, LAPD vs Abran Rodriguez, LASD for the UCA Middleweight Championship Title fight. When the bell sounded to start the fight Mendoza took control of the fight setting the pace and controlling the action. Rodriguez was a game fighter and stood in front of Mendoza and took everything he had and gave some back. The commanding Mendoza never let up he continued to pressure, landing to the body and head with razor sharp accuracy. Mendoza has a calmness to him in the ring. He knows how to create openings, he moves around well, and throws a variety of punches from the southpaw and conventional stance. From Mendoza’s performance Saturday night he may be a champion for a long time. After three championship rounds Mendoza would be announced the winner…… and the new UCA Middleweight Champion Hector Mendoza, Los Angeles Police Dept.

UCA 1 (12) (800x677)Just days before Nate Osborn, CHP and Travis Tilton, Sugar Creek, Illinois Fire Dept. were set to clash for the Masters UCA Super Cruiserweight Championship title fight Osborn suffered an injury and was forced to pull out of the fight.  While Tilton was in flight to California, Chuck Pfau, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Dept. was asked to step in. Pfau is a grinder and always in shape and when presented with the challenge he couldn’t turn it down. With 3 days’ notice Pfau accepted the fight with Tilton and a great title fight was made. When the bell sounded to start the fight the fans were treated to some tremendous action. The first round was fought at a fast pace as both fighters came forward looking to break the other man’s will. Pfau continued to pressure Tilton throughout the fight and never stopped risking himself in pursuit of the win. After 3 hard fought rounds Pfau would emerge with the win….and the new Masters UCA Super Cruiserweight Champion.

The nighUCA 1 (15) (800x783)t’s main attraction featured Sean Johnson, CDCR, Kern Valley State Prison vs Anthony Deshautelle, Alexandria Police Dept. for the Master UCA Super Heavyweight Championship Title. When the bell sounded to start the action both fighters met in the center of the ring with the intention of making a statement that they are the best fighter in the Super Heavyweight division.  For 3 championship rounds Johnson and Deshautelle exchanged punches. This was a very close fight between two equally skilled fighters. The decision would be left in the judges hands. And the new…Masters UCA Super Heavyweight Champion, Sean Johnson, CDCR, KVSP.

Apr 2016 15

UCA 1 (7) (706x800)One of the most important fights on Saturday night was the match up between the interim UCA Jr Middleweight Champion Chris Martinez, Fresno Police Dept. and the reigning and defending UCA Jr Middleweight Champion Dusty Rodriguez, Santa Monica Fire Dept. Both fighters made their walk to the ring with the UCA belt in their possession but only one will leave with it. Before the bell sounded two men with so much in common stood in opposite corners of the ring. Both hold the UCA strap, have wins over the division’s elite, are considered the best at 154 pounds and it’s the first time two champions will square off with each other. When the bell rang Martinez got off to a blazing start pressuring and throwing heavy shots determined on stopping Rodriguez. It was a good strategy, Rodriguez has been inactive over a year while Martinez has become the most active fighter in the UCA.  Rodriguez showed no signs of ring rust, his timing, rhythm and cardio were spot on. While Martinez continued to pressure trying to make it a rugged fight, Rodriguez kept his composure and made his punches count ultimately forcing the referee to step in and give Martinez a standing 8 ct. The fight would go the distance and in the end it was Rodriguez quickness, timing, technical skills and ability to land the cleaner more damaging blows that sealed the win for him. And still….the undisputed reigning and defending UCA Jr Middleweight Champion, Dusty Rodriguez, Santa Monica Fire Dept.

Apr 2016 13

UCA 1 (14) (679x800)The Co Main event of the night featured the former reigning and defending UCA Middleweight Champion DJ Vargas, Hanford Police Dept. vs #1 ranked Quincy Mirage, LAPD. Vargas was on a mission to be the first fighter to capture two titles in two different weight classes. Mirage was on a mission of his own, to defeat Vargas and leave no doubt in the judge’s eyes who the best Super Middleweight is. Vargas and Mirage have history, they met last year for the UCA Middleweight Title and Mirage would be on the losing end of a split decision. If controversy produces rematches Vargas vs Mirage is a lock. Thus we are left with a repeat-or-revenge scenario. Mirage came into the fight with confidence riding the momentum of a 2 fight win streak. When the bell sounded Mirage went to work. He used a relentless attack to get inside, where he did the majority of his damage with powerful hooks and uppercuts. LAPD Coach Jorge Gonzales devised the perfect game plan and Mirage never deviated from it. He used intelligent aggression to find holes in Vargas defense to land clean shots and Vargas did not have an answer. In the end it was the power shots along with the higher connect percentage and Mirage’s enormous fighting heart that carried him to victory. Before the decision was announced there was no doubt in the judge’s eyes who the winner was. And the new……UCA Super Middleweight Champion…Quincy Mirage, Los Angeles Police Dept. The former UCA Champion DJ Vargas was humble and graceful in defeat. After the fight Vargas said, “Quincy was the better man tonight, he fought a great fight.” For Mirage it’s affirmation that his hard work has paid off and he truly is a champion.

UCA 1 (1)The Central California Battle of the Badges has become the most anticipated event of the year from the talent it attracts. On Saturday, April 9, 2016 the most skilled fighters in the country met in the ring for a blockbuster night of boxing at the Hanford Civic Auditorium. The card featured two of the best fighters from Louisiana, one from Illinois and the best from California. The fans got their money’s worth as they were treated to knockouts, knockdowns, back and forth battles and highly skilled fighters laying it all on the line for charity.

The night’s opening bout saw two female warriors compete in their last amateur bout before turning pro. Katonya Fisher, Bakersfield and Sarah Flores, Fresno displayed good skills for 3 nonstop action rounds. Fisher would to pick up the decision victory in a very exciting fight, setting the stage for a riveting night of action.

UCA 1 (2) (800x642)The second bout of the night featured Super Middleweight’s Larry “Americanelo” Treybig, Los Angeles vs Will Heard, U.S. Navy. Treybig is a bit of a celebrity due to his resemblance to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. He trains at the world famous Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, CA and has been featured on HBO’s 24/7  with Miguel Cotto and Showtime All Access with Floyd Mayweather. When the bell sounded to start the fight Heard came forward looking to end the fight early. Treybig used good head movement to avoid Heard’s heavy blows. As the fight wore on Heard started to slow down and Treybig started to come forward. In the 2nd round Treybig landed a clean shot would send Heard to the canvas. This fight would go the distance and Treybig would have his hand raised and bring his record to 3-1.

UCA 1 (3) (800x686)Bout 3 featured perhaps the next UCA Jr Middleweight Champion. The much talked about Mike Delery, LAPD finally got his chance to display his skills and he did not disappoint. Delery took on a tough opponent in Hue Xiong, Fresno Sheriff’s Dept. Xiong was clearly the stronger fighter but Delery would never feel his power as he worked angles, moved in and out, and displayed good footwork, and hand speed. Xiong also displayed good footwork and balance and was most effective when he was aggressive and came forward but it wasn’t enough. Delery was too slick and sharp, he would run his combinations and not stick around for the pay back. Once the final bell sounded Delery would pick up his first UCA win by a unanimous decision victory. Delery is the total package and a threat to everyone in the Jr Middleweight division.  For his performance Delery received “UCA Golden Fists” honUCA 1 (4) (800x640)ors

Bout 4 featured two fighters making their ring debuts in the heavyweight division, Javier Estrada, Madera Probation vs Gilbert Galvan, U.S. Army. Galvan started out aggressive coming forward throwing punches in bunches while Estrada held his ground and fired back shots of his own. Galvan kicked it up a notch in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the fight. After 3 hard fought rounds it was Galvan who would pick up the unanimous decision victory.

UCA 1 (6) (800x671)Bout 5 featured Heavyweights Marqus Bleveins, Kings County Probation vs Nate Webb, U.S. Navy making their UCA debut. This was an old fashion shoot out from the opening bell. Blevins was a little bit faster on the draw and was able to unload before Webb had a chance. Webb would have his moments throughout the fight connecting shots of his own. Blevins was busier and more accurate with his punches which ultimately forced the referee to step in and end the fight at 1:20 of the 3rd round. Blevins winner 3rd round TKO. It was a star making performance that put the heavyweights on notice. Blevins revealed he is truly a special fighter with unlimited potential. For his performance Blevins received “UCA Golden Fists” honors. Webb would receive “UCA Gladiator” honors.

UCA 1 (8) (727x800)Bout 6 featured two fighters making their UCA debut, Travis Clark, Stockton Police Dept. vs Roberto Osuna, Army National Guard.  Clark took control of the fight early with speed, footwork, and ring smarts while Osuna showed a lot of heart, good fundamentals and composure. After 3 rounds of boxing Clark would pick up a unanimous decision victory.  Clark is fundamentally sound and doesn’t seem to have any weakness.  Add another name to the already exciting Middleweight division. For his performance Clark received “UCA Golden Fists” honors. Osuna would receive “UCA Gladiator” honors.

UCA 1 (10) (800x688)Bout 7 featured a matchup between Martin Gutierrez, Lemoore Police Dept. vs Mike Valle, CDCR, Pleasant Valley State Prison. When the bell sounded to start the fight the sold out crowd had no idea what they were about to witness. Two fighters with warrior blood running through their veins who refused to back down. It was a frenzied battle that was filled with unrelenting action from bell to bell. Other than the mandatory one-minute rest period between rounds, it felt like one extended round as Valle and Gutierrez exchanged punches nonstop the entire fight. This brutal 3 round war showcased both fighter’s heart, grit and toughness. This fight was about who can break the other man’s unbreakable will. That is how you make an impact in your first fight, Martin Gutierrez, and Mike Valle welcome to the UCA! Before the decision was announced and regardless of the outcome this fight had rematch written all over it. Both fighters tried to take it out of the judge’s hands but neither man would break. When the scores were added up Mike Valle would emerge victorious by a very close split decision. For their performance Valle and Gutierrez received “UCA Fight of the Night” honorsUCA 1 (13) (800x751)

Bout 8 featured Super Heavyweights David Ross, CHP making his UCA debut against Rishard Hayes, Tribal Public Safety Officer. When the fight started Ross moved around the ring well using his height and reach advantage. As the fight continued Hayes was able to get inside the lengthy Ross and land hooks and uppercuts. After 3 action packed rounds the decision would be left in the judges hands.  In a very close fight Hayes would pick up the win by split decision.

uca belts-6191 (800x488)Becoming a champion is committing to your team and yourself to follow through with the goal regardless of how tough it gets. There will be nothing more challenging than preparing for a fight. It will pull from the depths of your soul and show you who you are, and what you are made of. Going to the gym when you are hurt and don’t feel like it. Eating a healthy diet when you want to cheat.  Pushing your body to the limit when you don’t have the energy to do it. Having the discipline to do what needs to be done even though you don’t want to. Do you have what it takes to be a champion?

This was a very close fight that could have gone either way. In the end it was Ancel Patricio who would get the win by split decision.
